I'm British and I served in the Army for over 16 years in Germany. So I have visited many Christmas markets throughout Germany and also Holland. I have to say that you will never find anything like them in the UK, or elsewhere. Even in small towns you will find stores handing out cups of glue wine to customers to warm them up. The German people really know how to celebrate Christmas, and any other event like Rosenmontage and other local carnivals. Germans are wildly known for their lack of humour, but I never found that to be true. They really get into the spirit of the whatever is going on. I even remember one time we went to the Munich Beer Festival. They had ' disco cars ' to get you in the party mood. You could buy a wrist band to give you full access, which included a engraved glass. The main square had a fountain that dispenced beer rather than the normal water. How cool was that? I'm coming up to my 70th birthday and I miss those good times. In the UK shops have cheap displays. Everyone is pushing and shoving in the stores. If you wish a woman or child happy Christmas in a shop? You get some angry gorilla in your face wanting to know what you meant by it.

Hello, I am german and find it always funny when someone mentions the small bun compared to the big sausage. I say, the bun is only there to hold the sausage. If the sausage was'nt so hot we probably would'nt need the bun at all, lol.

I agree with you about the Market by the Cologne Cathedral. We have been there three years ago and to me it had a much too comercial feeling. All too bright, too colorful and, in my opinion, with a much too modern feeling.
The other two were like the ones we visited when I was a Kid in the seventees. Handmade Products and you can watch the crafters. Even some things I thought were non existent todays like a real forge with a coal fire or a Book binder, a shoemaker making old wooden shoes from a log of wood, like the ones you see in an old picture from the Netherlands. If you want you can get them in your own size to wear while gardening.
And the food...😋😋Every year again we try something new.

First of all...you two are a delightful couple. There are about 3000 Christmas markets in Germany and each one is different. Some are only open for 1 to 3 days, others for several weeks. However, what has mostly deterred me personally from visiting them are the completely inflated prices.
    Very good video, thank you.

It depends on what you are comparing the prices to,I've been coming to the Christmas markets in Germany for 18 years and the cost of most things there far cheaper than here in Ireland!

Think you forgot the most important tradition. At the 4. of Advent you have to turn back the scales by 5 Kg. 😉🙃🤣😋
The market is called "Heinzels Wintermärchen" / Heinzels' winter tale.
The gnomes are called Heinzelmännchen. They are Cologne house spirits with their own saga.
I saw it coming. In the end she turned smurfish because of all the food.🤢

knofi is coloquial for garlic (knoblauch), so basically it was garlic bread which somehow is a staple at christmas markets but they really had some original versions both for the garlic bread and the potatoe pancakes (i think you called them).

Hopefully it will be third time lucky this year and we will get to a place that is so dear to our hearts. We have never tried the stuffed bread but will next time, it looks amazing. I've seen a lot in the USA through films or something like that, that Halloween and Christmas a lot of houses are really blatantly decorated, that's just very subtle here. but i like that everything lights up when it's christmas or halloween i like that tradition at your place. now you see big cities and markets a bit decorated but small towns or villages are rather bare unfortunately .
