have both but prefer the pathfinder the transgia is collecting dust and is only used for a backup. I use a 10 cup percolator for coffee and cook breakfast for five people without having to refuel it. hands down Pathfinder. thanks for the video and hopes my comment helps others.

We bought the Pathfinder stove a couple of weeks back, it didn't bloom all the way around. You can see the metal at the top of the holes, and I contacted Pathfinder and the sent me out a new one, and it works very well. We only bought it to have for when we are fishing and want to make a cup of coffee or heat some water for some Mountain House meals so if it is slow, all is good, as we are not in a hurry.
I may look into the Trangia or the Lixada stove mentioned in the comments here, just to see if there is a big difference but for what we wanted it for, it will be OK for use. We have only tried it out once and it was in the house, with HEET. I plan on seeing how long it will take to boil two cups of water and then make a more informed decision about buying another Alcohol Stove from there. Thanks for the great video.

My Pathfinder stove leaks. My Trangia -- heck, even Trangia knockoffs -- work as you'd expect. Just my experience, but I see the leaking reported in reviews on the Pathfinder website by others.

So I can't say anything negative about the Pathfinder stove. I use it every day and so far he has neither let me down nor has it licked or prepared me with other problems. I always have him with me and am satisfied

I have both the swedish mess kit and a pathfinder cook it so I know what your saying. I can't say which I prefer. It like you said it all depends on where I'm going and what I'll be doing! So thank you for confirming for me what I was thinking. ATB Sam Adler

I was lucky to get a very hard to find simmer ring for the military trangia stove, which is a different size than standard. So does everything i need. But the pathfinfer one is nice. Just cant justify spending money to buy one for no advantages. Also, since i use the swedish steel mess kit, its the stive it was designed for, and works best. I got 4 of the swedish military stoves for like $15 years back. Couldnt pass it up, so i have spares.

I have over ten years experience with the Trangia (both stoves). They are the gold standard which all others are judged by. I found a "deal" on ebay for a new Pathfinder stove and have nothing good to say about it. It takes forever to blossom and only puts out about half the heat of a Trangia. If you are in a survival life and death situation you don't want the Pathfinder as it has two things working against it. First it is made of stainless which does not heat up enough to be effective as the Trangia and second it's capacity is too much again to get hot enough to cook with or just boil water. I gave the Pathfinder a fair chance and I would never consider it an option. Don't take my word for it - do your own testing and you will see a vast difference between the two. The Trangia will win hands down every single time.

buck shot what does the material the stove is made of have any relevance to its ability to boil water ? I use Solo Stoves.. I have both the Lite ( 1 person ) & the Titan ( 2 person ) both which come with a pot which stove nest's into respectively.. I will put either one of my Solos against your Trangia & I guarantee the Solo will boil water faster than the Trangia... Solo is made of Stainless....

    • @buckshot4428
      @buckshot4428 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@baroneb5043 The quicker the stove is able to come up to speed (blossom/bloom) the hotter it burns. The Swedes figured this out way back when. That is why they are the gold standard that remains today. Bear in mind that I am talking about the Pathfinder stove in particular, not the Solo, but if the Solo is made of stainless I'll gladly do a boil off with my Trangia. Hiram Cook (the king of alcohol stoves) did many reviews/tests of alcohol stoves and the Pathfinder did not fair well when compared to others.

Not sure if I'm correct, but I believe the size of the 'military' trangia is a bit larger than the 'normal' trangia stove that comes alone or with their multi-piece sets...

Mix the 70 and the 91 alcohol 50/50 and you will double the burn time. It does take longer to bloom but it will have a nice blue flame.

My pathfinder stove does not have a wicking material to wick the alcohol from the bottom to the top holes. It relies on the heat to vaporize the alcohol for the bloom. Plus the stainless steel take longer to warm up.
The Brass Trangia has the wicking material to draw the alcohol from the bottom to the top where the holes are. This is why the Trangia blooms faster. One other Trangia type/style is the Evernew Titanium stove , it also has the wicking material for a faster blooming time. Two benefits of the titanium , light weight and it cools down a lot faster after the flame is out.
Several of the Trangia and even the Evernew knockoffs don't have the wicking material and are not worth the savings they offer.
As far as the pathfinder I used it on one trip and when I got home it was tossed in the back of a bin and has stayed there since then. To say I was disappointed with it is an understatement. In fact it's keeping company with all of my Vargo alcohol stoves.

I too am very disappointed with the Pathfinder stove. I can not imagine trying to light it in cold weather. You would literally have to douse it it alcohol and pray.

What’s your go to fuel source for cooking inside? I’ve heard that heet puts off toxic fumes and should never be used inside, so when I use mine inside such as a power outage I use denatured alcohol, 91% alcohol or grain alcohol (serves as double duty for some of us) but outside I find heet works just as good and at a fraction of the cost. Also is your Swedish cook set aluminum or Stainless? I find the stainless is very hard to find and a lot more pricey. Anyway thanks for sharing and as always safe journeys and take care, Nikki.

I have heard that the HEET in the Yellow bottle is OK because it is just Methanol but the HEET in the Red bottle has some kind of an additive in it and is dangerous to use inside. But that is just what I have heard. We are using the Yellow bottle and have no issues with it in the house. Just wanted to share our experience with HEET with you too.

Nice, but lame.... nothing compares to the 1942 Millers Griller stove. Model Two Person Base Camp Kitchen.... and you can grill, fry, bake, roast, smoke, hot water reservoir, multi fuel, shelf space for condiments, and all smaller than a case for a cordless drill.
