My father was stationed in England in the early 60’s and I was fortunate enough to see the very first season with WIlliam Hartnell. I was attending an English primary school at the time, and all of us boys loved the show.

If Cushing had taken the role ,then we probably wouldn't have had Patrick Troughton taking it. Troughton's doc is one of the best!

I assume you means 'Galiifrean' Doctor (as in, Timelord!) as he WAS a Dr. Who. & YES... Team Baker! (TOM that is!) all the way!

Thrashpondo Pons Tom Baker refers to the role as Dr Who, as in ‘I was playing Dr Who back then’, and outside of an in-universe discussion it avoids confusion, otherwise you might be talking about A doctor, not The.
This thing of never calling the character Doctor Who in any context is a recent thing as originally it was commonplace on TV and in the Radio Times, and even the credits of the classic show, plus in the movie that is his actual name, as in he is Mr Who, who is a doctor, so I think it should only be applied to the new series, myself.

Living in the US, these films were my first exposure to Dr. Who since they were often rerun on TV in the early 70's . The series wouldn't arrive in my area until PBS stations picked it up in the early 80's(starting with the Tom Baker era). Always thought The Daleks were neat.

Same here. Once I found out that Dr Who was a tv show, I just HAD to watch one, and got hooked on Tom Baker. Later on, I learned that he had been preceded as the Doctor by Jon Pertwee, who immediately became my SECOND favorite Who

A period when movies were wholesome and producers cared about their effect on people. Reflecting to audiences an egalitarian inter-generational family life. (The time machine, had a son like his father). Modern movies are narcissitic and rootless, the better ones often have to constantly battle with the themes to reclaim broken relationships (Die Hard, to fix a marriage. Taken, to bond with a teen-age daughter etc.).

I’m surprised you didn’t mention how actor Bernard Cribbins was in “Daley’s invasion Earth” as character Tom Campbell. And then later in life, he was a repeat character on the Doctor Who series in 207-2010 as Wilfred Mot. Donna’s grandfather.

In the sequel, Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D., they were going to get another actress to play Susan. When Peter Cushing found out, he refused to reprise his role. So Robert Tovey played Susan again. There was to be a third film to be based on the 1965 TV episode "The Chase." This was never made due to disappointing box office results of the first two films and the producers thinking that "The Chase" wouldn't have made a very good movie. - Source: IMDB

Dalek's Invasion Earth 2150 was my introduction to Dr. Who way back in the 1970s when I was a kid. I had never seen the tv series, so the movie is what I thought the Doctor was supposed to be. I don't mind these films, as they are just an alternate take on the idea...certainly nothing to get incensed over. I discovered the real Doctor Who on PBS a few years later when they showed the John Pertwee and then the Tom Baker episodes. Ah, I miss those days!

Sounds like Sunday night on WTTW 11 Chicago. We got it on cable 120 miles away. Yakity Sax fun then great sci fi.
My British roommate at the time started watching because of seeing some of his home actors. Valentine Dyall was one such actor. I walked into the TV room a couple of times and finally recognized the Daleks from the years earlier movie I remembered when a kid. The film aired when nearly new on WFBM 6 in Indianapolis by host Frances Farmer. A dried out film star come home and got in with a local TV station and knew how to get the best films on the circulation syndicate. After school quality TV time. She only had to recline in a couch on air live and introduce us to the greatest films of all time. This was before any network showed feature length films.

Lanier2369 In Steven Moffat’s novelisation of The Day of The Doctor he repeatedly mentions how The Doctor was great friends with the actor Peter Cushing and fed him all the ideas for the movies. He watches them frequently and also does a Peter Cushing impersonation of him playing ‘Doctor Who’.

I feel sad for the first Doctor Who movie. It's not considered canon I learned.
That movie introduced me to the world of Doctor Who or as diehard true blue fans call him The Doctor.
I didn't instantly became a fan but I like that movie. (Doctor Who was not broadcasted then in the early 80's here in the Philippines, later in 1989 but in a short run only.)
I can say, Peter Cushing is my First Doctor.

    • @thebasementfilmgroup

Moffat has made them cannon - it was meant to be featured in the 50th special, but was never addressed - but in the Target Novel version of the 50th special - there are references made to the movies - in other words the cushing films are actually films about the 'Doctor' in the DW universe.... so moffat made them cannon (sort of)

I really enjoy Peter Cushing as the Dr he makes it a very likeable character and there is a little humour to the films. I really didn't like the steam weapon of the Daleks and some characters made stupid unrealistic decisions which annoyed me but generally great films that I enjoy watching now and again. Personally I'd like to see updates to both films with improved CGI replacing some of the poorer effects. I know people hate changing classic films but that weird wobbly teapot spaceship always annoys me slightly. I just feel the films could be enhanced nowadays.

Back in the 1960's, I had a choice between "Dr. Who" or "The Avengers." The former had a "kid's show" vibe to it, not impressive to the high school me, so I went with "The Avengers," especially after the "stabbed man falls onto a giant checkerboard" trailer. (This was during the Diana Rigg era.) I looked at an episode of "Dr. Who" on PBS (I think) and found it "less than interesting," and continued with "adult UK TV" series such as "The Prisoner" and the later editions of "The Avengers."

Some inaccuracies - Roy Castle was far more than 'an actor', for example, as was 'well-known actor', Peter Cushing. I agree with Tom Baker's sentiments, too. He was spot on, but we should not lose sight of the fact that both films were Saturday Morning at the flicks for children stuff - who wouldn't give a damn about production values.
Look forward to your take on 'Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D' - which for me was a far better, earthy film.

BBC management back then were pencil-pushing idiots for not keeping tapes of their better shows. In fact, if Terry Gilliam hadn’t bought the tapes of Monty Python’s Flying Circus just prior to BBC managers having them recycled for recording new shows, the syndicated broadcasts in the US never would have occurred, which was critical for the comedy group getting funding for making their movies.

The biggest flaw with the cast is arguably Jennie Linden’s Barbara of whom is so obviously superfluous, being relegated to a pseudo fifth wheel that basically echoes/emulates anything Roy Castle’s Ian says or does. Shame they couldn’t have utilised her character more meaningfully tbh.
Still, I refute many critics assertion that Susan shares a similar fate. Indeed, shrewdly reduced in age from her TV counterpart, Roberta Tovey’s Susan successfully acts as a proxy for the younger members of the audience exuding youthful naivety yet also conveying pluck, spirit and intelligence.
Imbued with such qualities then she provides a good and very deliberate contrast to the ultimately redoubtable yet comedically oafish Ian!

In the 60s we sorta laughed at the Daleks even as six year olds. Nobody in the theater looked scared, and we were all kids because in the mid 60s USA you dropped your kids off on Saturday afternoon for movies while Moms got their hair done.
