Both Encyclopedia Britannica and Albert Schweitzer said compare Telemann's inferior music to that of Bach." They then used 'Bach' works as an example. Turns out - those particular works were by Telemann! I've always been a huge Telemann fan - and though not the equal of Bach, I love his music.
Bach and Telemann had different purposes and different audiences. Religious and pedagogical motives are prominent in most of Bach's output, while Telemann was more of a "pop" composer in modern terms. Also, Liepzig (and Bach's prior workplace, the court at Coethen), were hardly Telemann's big-city Dresden.

Shameless plug: if it's still available, my all-time favorite Telemann recording is "Telemann Chamber Music" recorded by the Chandos Baroque Players in 1987. The personnel on the recording are Rachel Beckett: recorder, Valerie Darke: oboe, Alison Bury: violin, Mark Caudle: viola da gamba & cello, Melvyn Tan: harpsichord;, and Richard Tunnicliffe: cello. Their performance is powerful yet delicate; sensitive interpretations that make Telemann come alive. I've heard enough uninspiring recordings of Telemann's music to know his music requires thought and just the right expression to keep the performance from sounding like the musicians are just phoning it in. This recording taught me that Telemann deserves his place in the trinity of German high baroque composers. richard -- Television is called a medium because it is neither rare nor well done. - attributed to Ernie Kovacs
@@movieshortssociety I'll risk you disagreeing but understanding. This 10-hour video offers a lot of different compositions, which we don't get a playlist for, too bad, but one of them, starting @32:30, is the "Concerto for Traverso and Recorder in E minor," (which you can hear by itself elsewhere e.g. th-cam.com/video/2D-y2kJU0lg/w-d-xo.html with Princess Leia on the lead woodflute), consisting of 4 movements: a Largo, an Allegro, another Largo, and finally a Presto, which begins @43:38. The Presto is a raucous, panicky scuffle mostly in E-minor phrases & harmonies. But then "towards the end" @45:33 it breaks into a G-major phrase of bright, triumphant fanfare, with the woodflute piercing the sky on a single sustained high-high-G and the rest of the company carrying the melody (here q23.us/i/Presto-G.png ), just for a few measures, but then it drops and repeats in the related key of C major, before at last going back to the panicky run in the dark. Anyway that phrase in G and then again in C really caught my ear. I hope now it catches yours :) and aren't we blessed in a world of so much music that's full of little treasures like this.
@TheDank0r hehe i was just teasing. You seem like a great, I assume, guy. 👍 the A minor recorder suite and his flute works in general keep me coming but there is a lot of redundancy and not very inspired works in his catalogue as well. Great day to you.
I had a dream that we were on duelling harpsichord and it was heated. Telemann always seems slightly jazzy in a Baroque way. The flow is maybe in a different pocket

My goodness, Classicool ! there's no tracklist !!! How can we manage ? How can we exploit this document ? The title of the upload in French ("Musique classique baroque pour se concentrer et travailler") is not very appropriate either, to say the least. Music like that of Telemann is meant to be listened to as attentively as possible. It is not a means to make one's work lighter or favor mind concentration. Personally, I can't listen to music while working. If I play a record when I work, I listen to the music and don't work at all ! I acknowledge that the works here selected of this very prolific composer are beautiful. But couldn't we be willing to know the titles of the works uploaded? This water-tap concept of music is disappointing : you turn on the tap and just let the water flow whatever it is !
For myself, I get a particular pleasure in listening to powdered-wig music while digging in the garden or washing dishes. This is a democratic era - let the people have the music when and where (and why!) they will.
The trouble with Telemann is that he wrote too much, and as such he is difficult to get into. Sonata this, concerto that, endless. I am fond of what I have heard, but I cannot catagorise his music like, for example, Beethoven.
The Tempo is 4 times faster than it should be. Who has played this music has made salad out of the wonderfull music of Telemann. Awfull ! I cant even believe such a thing is possible ! Tho listened up to the first 1/4th, but it is not worth it ...
You mean, “10 hours with Telemann and a buttload of ads”! People really shouldn’t monetize accounts where they make money from the performances of actual musicians who’ve created what’s been uploaded and derive ZERO benefit….classical musicians make squat as it is, and it angers me to see that people make money from their work. Also, your thumbnail is horrible….all of the dark parts on his face looks as though he’d started the process of decomposition when his likeness was taken, or that he suffered from necrotizing fasciitis.
I will admit I've always seen Telemann as the quintissential "generic" Baroque composer. All his music is workmanly and true to the style, but nothing to me ever stands out or is particularly memorable. He has neither the technical depth and intricate intellectual profundity of Bach, the showy verve of Vivaldi, nor the crisp courtly grace of Handel. It's all gray to me.
Interesting analysis, and, I must admit, to some degree I agree. As the Prestige mentioned, "After discovering Telemann , please un-discover him." is somewhat similar to my sixty years of hearing him, not caring a bit for just the reason you mention, then, knowing that the musical appreciation part of us does change, I came to this and have a somewhat different opinion...it is decent background music for me, but nothing else other than to appreciate where it stands in the evolution of music.
People who appreciate and listen to classical music are the only sane people on the planet these days. We need this music now more than ever before. Give thanks!
