    I study a map before a journey and decide on certain en-route "waypoints". Then I set the satnav to pass those waypoints. In that way you force the satnav to eg turn off at a particualr M-way junction. The waypoints are best set on plain stretches of road because you don't want to have to wait for the satnav to calculate the next leg while you are in the middle of a junction. Not all satnavs allow waypoints to be set however.

    • @TravellingK
      @TravellingK  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I tried adding a waypoint but stupidly added a town that I skimmed past. The sat nav got highly confused and kept wanting me to do a U turn for the rest of the trip. Turns out I need to drive to that exact point?! Good tip about adding stretches of road.

    Watching your videos has reminded me how lucky I am to live in the North East.
    We are only a hop from ..The Lakes..North York’s..The Dales..Northumbria and then upwards to Scotland .
    Might take it for granted now and then.
    Safe travels

    Great video Karen. My advice if you haven't already is to buy a map book, I know people think there old fashioned but I think they make travelling around a lot easier, you'd be able to see which junction of the motorway you'd need to come off at and then follow the sat nav on the a and b roads. Plenty of petrol stations sell maps and books, not that expensive. You should see chatsworth House at Christmas, it looks fabulous.

    • @TravellingK
      @TravellingK  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just worry I wont be able to read a printed map while driving? Oh I imagine Chatsworth is stunning in Christmas!

      Hehe😀😂, I’m not suggesting you have one hand on steering wheel and the other with map in hand. A map is great to look at before the journey, rather than letting a sat nav decide which junction of a motorway you come off you can actually see for yourself, then compare with what the sat nav says. Maps are also great if you get lost, it’s just nice not to have to rely on technology all the time, but I think my favourite use of a map is you can see a much broader area of the location your in, you get to see where points of interest are, which you may want to see or not, but at least you know their there.
      Sitting down with a map book at end of day after a days travelling is nice too, you can see where you’ve been and compare it with the next days travels. As you can probably tell, I love maps.

      Sat navs are notorious for taking you on stupid routes ! You're stuck if you don't know the area 😟

    • @michaelharrison2775
      @michaelharrison2775 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I still like maps. But here, stateside, it seems we don't sell maps anymore. I went to Walmart to find maps and they said that they didn't deal in antiques. Then I went to a truck stop. Nope! I was amazed.

    Yep most sites have electric hook up but there will be a few CL sites that may not, we leave the grey waste flaps open while traveling home to allow for them to drain while traveling, as long as it’s not too excessive you won’t get any bother, I also flick the drain down tap for the hot water tank to shed some weight

    • @TravellingK
      @TravellingK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They only unpowered sites I've seen so far have been more for tents? Such a crazy concept to let the grey water drain while driving🤪So different in NZ! Nice tip about the hot water tank.

    Loving your channel, especially as you're travelling round the UK, welcome.
    Loved the comment about your satnav taking you through a village with narrow roads. Reminded me when I picked mine up - I'd never towed before and just used a standard sat nav which did the same as yours, took me the fastest route which happened to be through a villiage where I had about 3 inches clearance either side. Baptism of fire, I guess.
    Anyway, that brings me to the reason for the message, apart from saying hi of course.
    Shortly after that first experience I downloaded a different satnav that's designed for caravans, "copilot gps" that allows you to set the length, width and height of the van along with the weight and it then does it's best to select routes better suited to what you're towing. Theres two versions, one for car and one for caravan.
    So far, it's done quite well so might be worth a go?
    As for reversing onto the site, I dont use a motor mover and I managed to reverse straight onto my last site with no second goes, like a seasoned pro, and in front of an audience of other campers, lol.
    Take care and enjoy our wonderful country, it's got lots to offer.

    • @TravellingK
      @TravellingK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah 3in clearance!! Sheesh! What a start. I actually tried out copilot. Was dithering about paying for the yearly subscription but people had mixed views on Facebook...
      Great to hear you also don't use a motormover. I completely mucked up my last reversing... had an audience too🤦‍♀️

    Can't speak for caravan and motorhome sites but plenty of camping and caravanning club certificated sites give the option of electric hook up or not, it's often cheaper without. Some have no electric, toilets or showers, minimum requirement is water supply and chemical toilet disposal. You take your pick! Enjoying your take on caravanning UK style and your travels. We always found out satnav did that in the UK. We ended up some crazy roads and even came face to face with a truck on a way one lane - which they had to reverse back to the passing area. Loving your vlogs. And so envious of your trip :-).

    The thing with satnavs is that they have in their settings option the ability to choose how you travel. You can choose motorway only, avoid traffic jam, avoid toll roads etc. Alternatively, if you don’t want to get off the motorway continue driving and let the satnav “recalculate” it’s route. Hope you have a really great time in the U.K. Sometimes you can get all four seasons in one day. Not many countries have those kind of bragging rights. Thanks for all your videos, they are very enjoyable. 👍👍 (2 thumbs up quality)

    Hi there Karen, hope you get a chance to spend quite a few days in one place so you can start to relax and really enjoy the area your in. Im a solo caravanner and bought my first second hand van last year. Its a Bailey actually and I love it. I had a similar problem with my previous sat nav. The worry of being taken down narrow roads was too nerve wrecking for me so I invested in a caravan and motorhome specific sat nav which allows you to put in the dimensions of van and car combined or just car. It has made my travels much less nerve wrecking. I have the Avtex tourer 2 which is very expensive at around £350 but have found it good so far but stiil learning as only used it once on very long journey from Scotland to Dorset. I also bought a magnified map book for checking junction numbers etc. Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in UK. Would love another video from you in the future on reversing your caravan, although I realise it would take an awful lot of planning. PS if you get a chance explore Dorset it is beautiful Im just back from a week there and I wish Id had more time to explore. Check out my FB page if you have time to look at my photos and videos taken there? Take care. 🤗

    • @TravellingK
      @TravellingK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if I was here longer I'd also invest in a proper caravan sat nav! Seriously stressful. Good to know about the reversing video interest. I have been thinking of doing another one now. Really great to hear you're caravanning and overall loving it!

    Hi Karen Found you when you were narrowboating with David (Cruising the Cut) and now enjoy your vlogs - all the more because we are long time caravanners. Your learning curve with caravanning in the UK is very interesting; regarding the GPS, there is a unit on the market designed specifically for caravaners but don't have any experience of it. Just to inform the writer of one of your comments, UK caravans, and all European caravans I believe, DO have safety chains which bring on the caravan brakes in the unlikely event of caravan detachment. Keep up the good work, Karen !

    • @TravellingK
      @TravellingK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David - welcome! Great to hear you are also caravaners. It really has been a steep learning curve with towing here, haha. I have heard about this GPS set-up and if I was staying longer, I'd definitely get it!

    Loving the UK content... so nice to see my homeland again. Your satnav should have a setting on it which has you stay on the highways and avoid the small roads, less scenic but also less stressful as those UK roads get pretty narrow huh?

    You should head up through Northumberland maybe see Alnwick castle (hog warts) then head to Scotland they’re much more tourism friendly and absolutely breathtaking most of it, so long as you don’t leave a mess the Scots are great, most places barr a couple of county’s will let you pull over and stop I believe

    I'm loving this because it so reminds me of our start in caravanning 11 years ago. There's a lot to learn. Most Caravan Club sites allow you on from 12 midday but I think that Chatsworth is 1pm because of the long drive etc.
    I would suggest you leave earlier rather than wait until midday. All you're doing is killing time that you could better use at the other end, and of course if you're delayed you can arrive very late on site, tired and hungry. And you really do need to invest in a map, or a caravan-specific sat-nav, rather than follow the car's version. It doesn't know you have a van on the back! Our roads are often VERY narrow!

    • @TravellingK
      @TravellingK  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I seemed to have picked lots of the campgrounds with the 1 lane entrance and learning your roads are VERY narrow 🤣I've also learnt if I aim to leave at mid-day I end up having a very late lunch.

    Hi k. I live near to that road where you said “I wouldn’t want to do that with the caravan and it got me thinking. Now I LOVE my truck nav and feel naked without it you know width restrictions weight limits etc. Why don’t you browse some of the cheaper trucknavs some start from £60 now they all come with car mode but that would take you on that same road but if you program it as a 3.5 ton van + trailer it will plan you a caravan friendly route. Love the channel and keep on trucking.

    Great Vlog Karen. A new follower after your narrowboat visit with David.
    I must confess, I tend to use the Caravan and Motorhome Club sites because they do allow a lot of space between pitches, and the campers tend to respect each other's privacy, but are there to help if there's any problems.

    Good video and pleased you are enjoying UK. By suggestion check the settings on your satnav before you drive anywhere. There should be an option to choose the quickest route which take you away from narrow lanes and keep you on main roads. It would seem to be set for the default quickest route which is no good for you. I see you like old historical buildings and unlike NZ, UK is littered with them. If you had come to Norfolk then there is Sandringham (one of the Royal families residences), Blickling and Felbrigg. As you are enjoying this car with its reverse camera, I bet once home you will add one to yours.

Going back to a dedicated sat nav for caravans they can be a little dicky too, I missed a turn off once coming from Wales tyo the east midlands and instead of advising me to turn around when possible it took me down south which added over an hour to my journey time, think its best to look at a map first and just jot down the major roads needed in case of any errors. But you don't need a caravan for the brambles to reach you around where I live, a small car will do.
