Marantz CD player repair of No disc error

  • Marantz CD players with the Digital Servo Driver sometimes can't read CD's after some time of use. Often then it is thought that the laser output is too low but this is not always the case. Check for focus error gain like instructed in the video. For the CD67 I placed a 47k resistor across R112 to increase focus gain. Might also work for other players with the CDM12.1 or VAM1202 transport. Good luck.

    Yes, your fix works! Got a lot of headache after replacement of the original Philips CDM 12.1/15 laser module with a new VAM 1201/1202 in my old Marantz CD67SE. The video describes exactly the focus error symptoms and i soldered the 47k resistor paralell to R112 - problem solved! Thanks a lot for sharing your experience!

    If the player gives the "no disc" error, several things could be wrong. You could try to clean the lens first or try another disc. In my case there was a servo problem. The disc would read correctly if I pressed the disc downwards a little. What I did to repair is in the video description.

    I purchased 2 Marantz CD5001 cd players for cheap so I could see if I could get them both working. They both have the same problem spinning a few times then it stops and says "No disc". I cleaned both lasers and even purchased a new laser pickup mechanism and it's still the same problem. I tried holding the play button and pushing down the disc to make it spin but it still doesn't work. I found R112 on the PCB, but I would assume that just because it says R112 on my Marantz cd5001, doesn't mean that it's the same as the one in the video? Or are all of the R112 on Marantz PCB are the same for the focus gain?

      If problems come after some playing time it could be a worn out laser. First try cleaning the lens top and bottom. It is easy to find replacement transports.

    HiVery interesting.I have the Marantz CD63SE and KI signature versions.Is this issue with commercial CD's as well or just self recorded ones?The reason I ask is I have found certain makes of CD-R's won't play in the Marantz especially my KI Signature one.The SE seems more tolerant but still occasionally struggles with the first two or three tracks.Verbatim ones are pretty successful in the SE but still stop midway in the KI.Maxell ones play nearly fine, but the odd issues if replaying in the SE with the first two tracks and won't play at all in the KI.Both play commercial Cd's superbly with no issues.Would this be a focus issue in the KI as I've cleaned the lenses on both re greased the sled tracks and cleaned the end switches too.Or is the Ki signature so refined it only wants commercial discs to play.Thanks.......................

    • @japcast
      @japcast  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If something not optimal it first shows with CD-R's. A commercial CD has pits which a better to distinguish. Sometimes a very fine dust layer builds up at the backside of the lens and on mirror. I made a video for cleaning the back side of the lens and can upload if interested. Looking at your symptoms I won't guess it is a focus issue. Re-greasing the sled tracks is always a good practice but only solves skipping problems. Refinement in the KI version should not make for a poorer transport. I would clean the lens. Inspection of bad solder joints on PCB's won't harm either. If this does not help to replace transport. I found that the non genuine units you find anywhere just work fine.

    thanks for the movie. however, I have a marantz CD player but mine I can hear like an "clac clac" noise. I dissemble it and I found out the sound is coming from the lenses which don't stop moving... is it possible to repair it? or should I buy a new CD player tray with the same reference? I hope you can help me

    • @japcast
      @japcast  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which model player you have? With the No disc error you first hear clac clac and this can have many different causes. The sound comes from the lens trying and retrying to focus. If no success in focusing the CD won't even spin and an error message is shown. Another transport might solve the problem. Mine had a focus offset problem. If this is also in your case you will see the disc gets spinning when you press down the disc a tiny bit towards the laser lens. Focus gain/offset etc are set in the digital servo controllers so no easy access. But you can still correct by changing one resister like instructed in the video.

    • @luisteixeira942
      @luisteixeira942 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +japcast +japcast thank you for your reply. The model is a CD-67SE and the clac clac sound is present even without a cd... as soon as I turn it on the lens goes back and forward in the rails going the clac sound. I have been searching on the internet and some say that the rail needs to be greased so the lens travel smoothly... do you think this will solve the problem?

    • @japcast
      @japcast  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Checked mine, when powering on i hear a very soft ticking sound (with cover on). When your hear a strong clac maybe the gears of the sledge are skipping. There is an endswitch for the sledge. If the endswitch doesn't work the gears will skip, producing a stronger noise. Can you confirm the laser lights up when it is focusing? If you have a scope it is advisable to measure HF output prom pick up. During focusing you'll have to see a S-curve. During play you'll see the eye pattern.

    • @luisteixeira942
      @luisteixeira942 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +japcast in my case, when the cd player is on, it is always doing the clac clac noise and the laser goes non-stop frenetically back and forward in the rails... I don't know why this is happening... I am truly planning to replace the whole drive for a new equal Philips CDM new CD laser unit...

    Hi, I've got a Marantz cd 67 that's saying no disc whatever disc is put in, I've taken the top off and tried pushing the disc like in the video but nothing happens. The disc isn't spinning at all and the laser doesn't appear to be lighting up. Is it likely the laser is dead or could it be something else?

    • @japcast
      @japcast  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The laser needs power and enable signal. Check service manual for voltage levels in PLAY mode. Maybe a bad solder joint on PCB or bad connection. The laser could be dead but this doesn't happen too often. Mind the the laser is only turned on a short time after you close the drawer or press play. That is without disc. To look if laser turns on in a dark room as it is hard to see. Don't stare directly into laser beam.

    • @japcast
      @japcast  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That doesn't sound like the same problem I encountered. Mine would not read most CD's and when it did read there was no skipping. Skipping can occur every time when the pickup sledge moves a step forward. Some times the sledge shaft grease gets hardened and there is too much friction. To clean the shaft and grease, of course at your own risk. But skipping could be due to other problems too.

      A "no disc" error can have many causes. Please try cleaning the lens first. In my case the focus offset was off and this could have to do with the spindle height but I was able to correct with a resistor. To look for the feedback circuit for the focus actuator. Again the problem with your player could very well be another one.

      In the video I showed that without resistor it wouldn't read discs and with the resistor it does. So I just held the resistor across the original resistor to demonstrate the difference. Afterwards I soldered the resistor in place and proved a permanent solution in my case. I still wonder if maybe something else was going on, f.e. that the spindle height is not right for some reason which would explain the focus offset problem I encountered.

      Ferrari Dario you should use extreme caution when working on the inside of a cd player like that while it is powered on and plugged into the wall because the laser diodes can damage your eye and even burn you and also the transformer and the main board can give you a 120 volt ac shock if you touch certain parts of it also the capacitors can hold a dangerous amount of electricity and possibly kill you so be careful when doing what he is doing because it's very dangerous you would be better off getting a new one off eBay or getting a stereo receiver with a CD player built into it

      I don't know what might be causing this. The problem I demonstrated in my video was different. To start measuring all AC voltages coming out of the transformer. If no voltage at all perhaps the thermal protection inside the transformer failed or a fuse or mains switch or power cord interrupted. Secondly to check all DC voltages before and after the regulators according service manual. Check filament voltage of display. If all ok then to check if oscillators are running. Is a low jitter clock installed? Maybe some problem with this. Check for all internal connections and bad solder joints. Cracked circuit board? Please be careful since live voltage is present in this CD player.

    I have the same problem. I understand that you fixed the probleb, but I didn't understand how! What you put on the board and where exactly?

      No disc error can have several causes. First try to push down the CD a little after pressing play. If it does spin and read then you have the same problem. Look for R112 on the PCB. Solder a 47k resistor across existing R112. That's all.

      On Marantz CD63 R112 is located on RF AMP PCB. Is this the same resistor (120k)?
