My favorite thing about your channel is you prove that you can have balanced meals on a tight budget. Many that don't understand extreme tight budgets criticize convenience items like hamburger helper. But you work in fruits and vegetables to boost the meal.

I grew up on hamburger helper...2 boxes with 3/4 pound of ground beef total and a 99 cent bag of salad(no add ins ever) it was tasty and kept us fed on a budget but where I struggle was I ate it 4 nights a week with spaghetti and sauce on Friday night(no meat on Fridays at our house...ever) I still buy hamburger helper but it's not an everyday food

Exactly. For instance i use instant mashed potatoes to top my shepherd pies and for a super budget meal i use cheap store brand box mac to make a cheaper version of hamburger helper. You just boil the noodles then add to a pan of cooked ground meat and veggies and use the cheese packet and a little milk or sourcream to get everything cheesy and creamy

I do the same with rice a roni-type box mixes. At the same time I am cooking the mix, I cook a pot of white rice to extend the mix rice. I find it’s too seasoned. I always add extra veggies, a cooked protein, often cooked beans, the cooked plain white rice, and extra seasoning. This makes twice as much out of a rice boxed mix.

When my kids were in high school on sports practice nights I would make “freezer soup”: Throughout the month I would toss any leftover vegetables into a large freezer bag and when it was full, dump that into the slow cooker with a venison roast cut up, a couple diced potatoes and a quart of home canned tomatoes along with some Cajun seasoning and other spices. Bread in the machine, kids favorite meal.

I do a variation of this. I make a chili with 1lb frozen hamburger, red beans, pinto beans and Nalley’s chili (any flavor), canned chopped tomatoes, I put all the juices from canned beans, chopped onions and put in crock pot for about 6-8 hrs. Can add spices you like in your chili, This is our Christmas Eve meal, we invite single folks or elderly to celebrate the holiday with songs and share stories. End the night with an old classic movie James Stewart It’s a wonderful life, this is what your recipe reminded me of this tradition❤️ thanks

i make chili mac as a survive to payday meal using canned chili. i brown up diced onion and bell pepper and rough chopped hotdogs with a little salt, pepper, chili powder and paprika. i then add half a cup of water and usually a can of dennison's chili. get that hot and combined then add the boiled noodles from a box of generic box mac and its cheese packet. Add a big dollop of sourcream and stir til everything is combined. it's hot and filling and very comforting.

I think using convenience foods and adding extras to it is genius. There is absolutely nothing wrong with shortcuts. They save you from spending extra money on going out, and you still get a home cooked meal to share with your family.

  • @OrlaQuirk

I started with a bread maker, and then I learned how to make bread without it. But the bread maker still comes in so handy if I want simply to throw the stuff in, and not worry about it. I frequently use it to make the two to four loaves of homemade bread that we need when we have a big holiday meal, and need lots of dressing.
I frequently get a big air bubble at the top or a collapse there, and at the bottom there's the hole where the paddle was. But that doesn't matter if you're using it all for turkey stuffing. And if I need it for some other reason, I just use the part that comes out nice and square for my square pieces of bread, and I chop the rest into croutons or bread crumbs. Homemade croutons are so good, even if you don't put any spice on them. The simple goodness of actual homemade bread sprinkled in a common old can of soup, and it becomes special store-bought soup.
So we still keep the bread maker around.
It's also really handy that it has a timer, so I can set it up to have that bread just finishing baking, when I'm just finishing getting dressed in the morning. Fresh bread for breakfast, and the rest can sit in the oven on trays, drying for croutons and bread crumbs.

For the Hamburger Helper meal, did I see you remove the seeds/center of your Roma tomatoes bc of the extra liquid?! I like to use that tomato centers for homemade salad dressings in place of 1/2 the oil or in a lasagne w/ oven-ready noodles since they always need extra liquid. Same w/ corn cobs; I love using the kernels for salad/rice/corn muffins etc. But, the cobs are perfect for thickening soups/chowder.

My first cooking class was to make hamburger helper for my siblings at age 9.

I was always told you don't put your salt in the yeast directly and mix it in with the flour so it doesn't "kill" the yeast or reduce the rise. Your's doesn't look to have any rising issues! Now I wonder if it really matters when the salt goes in or if your bread would have been two pans worth 😂.

I have a challenge for you! Ive never been able to find a dupe/seasoning blend/diy mix that mimics hamburger helper. Its always close but not quite there. Any suggestions?

I don’t have any suggestions off the top of my head. I’ll think on it!

Is it 3/4 cups oatmeal or 1/2 cup?

    • @SeeMindyMom
      @SeeMindyMom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

It’s 3/4. I think I put it in the description box as 1/2, but that’s not right. It is 3/4 like I said in the video. I’ll see if I can fix that.

We LOOOVE Hamburger Helper! Cheeseburger macaroni is our favorite. I like it without the meat. But my meat lovin’ family has to have the meat🙄. I only make it about twice a yr. My husband could eat it once a month.🤗

Not sure what town you’re in Mindy but I’ve been able to find condensed minestrone soup at the Buy For Less on NW Expressway & lake Hefner parkway in OKC. I’ve had trouble finding it other places as well.

You put cheddar cheese and cottage cheese on a lot of dishes. I'm not much of a cheese person at all. But, you seem to incorporate it into most meals. Just an observation as a newer viewer.
