I am here because I heard a show yesterday hosted by Rosanne Cash on the Sirius/XM Beatles Channel and she mentioned Emmylou's cover of this song. Had never heard it before. Rosanne said she loved both versions despite how different they are, and she was right. This is a GREAT rendition.
For No One is one of the most crushingly poignant songs ever written. And this version more than does the original justice, right down to the low whistle substituting for the French horn. Emmylou sounds fantastic too - brilliant.
I can't stand most of today's country, but classic country that includes absolute musical INSTITUTIONS like Emmylou Harris is a different story. In addition, the Beatles are my favorite band, this is my favorite of their songs, and BOY, does she sing it beautifully. There's no voice quite like Emmylou Harris'. Thanks for posting it!
Play a Beatles song requires competence. And that Emmylou has. A wonderful interpretation, a single moment of music. A real treasure. Emmylou always in my heart.
I have to say, I like playing guitar to entertain myself, and so I found her to be a nice artist to play along with. But I have to say that as I looked at her I have to agree with you. She looks better grey than she did when she was young! Of course, even if she is getting old now, she will always have a great track record as an artist, and that lasts longer than beauty in this world.
This is the most beautiful version of this song that has ever been recorded. Thank you for sharing! I originally thought it was from the 1995 TAS., then I read your post. thanks again for the information!
I am a big fan of both Dick Gaughan and Emmylou. I got to say that emmylou Harris has played with just about anybody that's anybody and then some that ain't.
@panlemans "I'm not too fond of people covering Beatles songs, but this one is soo beautiful." In general, I agree. The original versions are etched so deeply into my mind that anything else seems a sacrilege. But Emmylou's cover of "For No One" is an exception to the rule. In fact, I find that I prefer it to the original. It is so much more soulful and sad. She sang this at the White House in a tribute to Paul and was absolutely wonderful. You can find the whole program at the PBS site.
For a couple of years now I've been trying to corral my feelings about this rendition of Paul Mc's song but you two have done it perfectly, word by word. Emmy Lou nailed it in a live version. Beautifully.
I feel the floor boards give way beneath my feet and could wish my feet were fleet...hurt too much to even sit...and bit by bit could never again find normal there was a storm...it never came...it just kept brewing... though the brewery down the street offered no possibility and the impossible became possible and both just a no exit strategy that extends past the vanishing point of no return...and yes I am a no one...and who would miss a no one... that's right...no one.
This just has to be one of the most beautiful recordings of "For No One" by anyone covering that song. I am glad I get to hear it! Love that Emmylou! (Not listening to all the other stupid people on here.) Bah!
The perfect song, the perfect setting. How much would I give to have a jam at one of Ally's Shetland Sessions, just once before I peg it! Oh, and I'd like to marry Emmy Lou too, please. :o)
This is about so much more than "voice" -- this is about "heart" and an oh-so-poignant interpretation that comes with maturity -- wait awhile, you'll understand.......
She is an interpreter. To me, most of the songs she has covered are more beautiful than the orginal ones. It is just my opinion. She is one of the greatest interpreters that this world has ever known. Another one i can think of now is the late Elis Regina of Brazil.
This beautiful version of the song is so radically different from the original Beatles. I would love to know who decided to depart from the original style. Was it Emmylou or one of her favorite writers? Her version probably my most favorite song of all time.
A great version. I wish Paul would have slowed his version down maybe later in a live show. This is about the time that Emmylou was beginning to lose her upper range. It can get on your nerves but she still gets through beautifully.
i disagree. the beatles DID NOT have "stiff upper lips". just b/c they're british doesnt mean they cant show emotion in their work. they all blow everyone out of the water. that is why i loved them @ first. they showed such emotion like i have never seen. this is a good cover though.
Well, oranger, we agree on their status as artists - in fact I have them # 2 to Dylan. My point is that there is poignancy here that is masked by the almost kaleidescopic manner in which the Beatles music accompanies the lyric. Even Paul's "demo version" is kind of bouncy.
Beautiful, but, unfortunately they blew it by adding musical resolution at the end. Sir Paul wrote the ending to the music to purposefully reflect the lack resolution of the character's emotions.
disagree. they're among the top handful of musical artists of the 20th century, they knew what thay had and how to use it. but maybe what they didn't know was that their music would last forever.
I agree. However the stoicism is very much in the vein of their recordings. They almost always maintained that stiff upper lip on most of their performances. They are English :) it is their job :) But a great tribute to the giants of composition. It gets no bigger. period.
Lennon-McCartney had the right idea, when they wrote the words, and when they wrote the evocotive melody. But I don't think they recognized the intensity of the emotion expressed in their song, which this performance does.

I think she does pull off this Beatles cover, and brilliantly. She reminds you what a good song it is, bringing out all the possibilities. Beautiful.
For No One is one of the most crushingly poignant songs ever written. And this version more than does the original justice, right down to the low whistle substituting for the French horn. Emmylou sounds fantastic too - brilliant.
Emmylou brings out the true beauty of this song.
Well said.
The Beatles done in Country - fabulous! And it works too . . . .
I just love her. Great, emotional rendering of a Beatle ballad that is a masterpiece.
I can't stand most of today's country, but classic country that includes absolute musical INSTITUTIONS like Emmylou Harris is a different story. Wow! The combination of a Lennon-McCartney tune, and country's music's most soulful woman! Beautiful! Brilliant performance! *****
Très belle interprétation toute en douceur et pleine de sensibilité !
Emmylou is one of the few singers that can bring me to tears. There is a touch of sadness in her that always comes through. I love her.
Emmylou puts her heart into her music. Thanks for posting this
The unmatchable, unsurpassable, lovely. Emmylou Harris, Thank you for posting this favorite.
I just found this a while back, and it's now one of my favorite ever Beatles covers. Wow, what an amazing performance.
I thought nobody could sing Beatles songs better than the Beatles and then Emmylou comes along and does this. Great song, incredible singer.
Well…..
Wow, she can really convey the heartbreak in this song. Well done.
This is so beautiful it hurts.
Her voice is fantastic--and she´s so beautiful!
Wonderful cover of the Beatles song by Emmylou. And that Ally Bain fair gets aboot.
Oh my lord, she's a beautiful woman.

Thanks so much for these posts.
Truly a great rendition. So perfectly done.
The queen of not just country but music in general!
I am a big fan of both Dick Gaughan and Emmylou. I got to say that emmylou Harris has played with just about anybody that's anybody and then some that ain't.
The Beatles rule. And this among the VERY FEW covers that is as almost as good as the original. ELH rules too.
Gave me goose bumps, played & sang so delicately.
this is a very beautiful version of one of my favorite Beatle songs... thanks for posting!
Stuuning. The song kept lingering in my head. No one could have done it better.
such a lovely women, devoted to her music
What an absolutely beautiful version of a great song. Emmylou sings like an angel and the arrangement is superb. Thanks for posting!
@BardofCornwall Yes! The best. Because it's The Beatles and her. This version is a true gift.
talk about re-inventing a song and owning it. bravo!
Wow, Love this version of Paul's song.
Superb interpretation, and a great mix of baroque elements with Harris' traditional presentation. The accompanists are, obviously, great too.
Gorgeous!
listening to this great cover, I almost forget what the original sounds like. It almost brings tears to my eyes.
Great performance of a great song
I wish they would release/repeat the Transatlantic sessions so much good stuff
I could listen all day to this, beautifull
Classic McCartney tune. Gorgeous rendition.
Beautiful!
Sometimes I think I'm in love with this voice.

Definitely the best cover I've heard. Thanks for posting.
I just cant get enough !
Jerry that was great...wonderful Emmylou
She is BEAUTIFUL
Now, that is beautiful. We love ya'
Lovely and amazing - thank you for posting this!
how many artists have covered The Beatles?
this one ranks as one of the best.
not a big suprise, since miss harris is an artist herself.
Always makes me cry.
Simply the very best version of this song
I feel the floor boards give way beneath my feet and could wish my feet were fleet...hurt too much to even sit...and bit by bit could never again find normal there was a storm...it never came...it just kept brewing... though the brewery down the street offered no possibility and the impossible became possible and both just a no exit strategy that extends past the vanishing point of no return...and yes I am a no one...and who would miss a no one... that's right...no one.

Arguable the only cover of a Beatles song which is better than the original.
Such a Great Cover! :'D
Great!
Yes it is...

Oh yes
THE BABE
Lovely. I wonder if Joan Baez or Linda Ronstadt recorded versions of this classic?
@ChristIllusion731 You're damn right, man!
she still a beautiful women

can't get on my nerves, but you are right with the rest :-)
Beautiful, but, unfortunately they blew it by adding musical resolution at the end. Sir Paul wrote the ending to the music to purposefully reflect the lack resolution of the character's emotions.
@rubbersole79 McCartney wrote it.
1:50 Paul Rudd on lap steel.
Jerry Douglas on Dobro
Wonderful!! Better than her studioversion too.
I’m from Ayrshire! Whit the fuck was I doing? I was likely off my tits. Closed session anyway.
@byan85 ....not to mention Lennon......
Who's the piper? It's not Davey Spillane...
disagree.

I usually don't like the Beatles... but if it's Emmylou to sing...,
u a stupid bitch
@nubrubber WOW - can I meet your Grandma??
tastefully done, but I prefer the original.

c64c64c64, that's troublecleff. He is THE MAN! I recorded vocals over his take on penny lane.
