You can use the WiFi connectivity out in the field. The GS911 interface unit broadcasts its own WiFi SSID. You just connect to it via your phone's WiFi settings app. It is actually very great because you don't need to pull out your laptop and a USB cable while sitting on the side of the road.
Yes and no... In the field you can connect your iPhone to the GS911wifi BUT you'll only be able to "read" information. In this "read" mode you are not registering a VIN. You can use the GS911 in the "read" mode on any bike and it never registers as one of 10 VINs your allowed with the Enthusiast Model.
@johnhenry3536 You didn't mention which model of GS911 you own. Some of them offer both a USB and a WIFI connection, some only the latter. The USB connection also provides greater functionality under the current software revisions. I'm going to assume you are having trouble with the WIFI connection? I would suggest first making certain that you have the current firmware, because there have been significant updates. There are also now downloads for WIFI utilities which you may find helpful. Is there a function to monitor the canbus - say for example reading the button presses on an RT1200RT-P which are normally routed to an additional controller?
There is no "built-in" function to read off the dash, if that's what you mean. You can use a scanner like the GS-911 to read error codes, of course. Some electronics wizards can hack into vehicle systems like the CANBUS controller, but that's pretty esoteric stuff.

OR maybe even the 1980's, they even mention in the documentation online something like "use normal phones, like blackberry, pda's..." There may actually be people using those old phones, in caves somewhere. :) JK.

I doubt the GS-911 is going to be much help. The possible reasons for the light coming on include genuinely low pressure due to low viscosity oil, insufficient oil, too much oil, or worn engine components. Or, you could have a bad sensor or electrical fault leading to the sensor like a broken wire or corroded connector. First I would carefully consider the circumstances around the warning, and eliminate other things before blaming the sensor. You say the light only comes on when the engine is warm? That means the oil is warm too, and warmer oil is thinner viscosity. Does it matter if the bike is parked or moving? Does it matter if it is located on an incline? Have you checked the sight glass for oil level? Does engine RPM matter? These sorts of questions may narrow down the problem. Further, what viscosity oil are you using and what are your ambient temps there? Have you done a recent oil change? What is the mileage of the bike? You can't check internal components but you can get a sense of the problem with these questions. If the sensor itself is suspect, I don't think BMW publishes the specs for testing. You'd have to replace with a known good unit. You could check the wiring harness and connector, though. Those sensors are generally pretty reliable so I would go through the questions above first.

It's funny, I used to work in the computer industry, and I've noticed how software design has changed over the years. Just like language, there are conventions and expectations in menus, graphical layout, etc. The GS-911 design is decidedly old-school, and honestly not that great even within that genre. It does make more sense when understood in that vein, rather than against the modern standards. Think of it like a car stereo, a printer menu or a home appliance. There's a main menu list and each item has sub-menu lists associated with it. You can't jump from one to another, you have to retreat first back to the main list and then navigate down a different path.
If there is a rev limiter, I've never hit it! No, I've never seen such an adjustment and since the bike will pull right up to redline I'm not sure why you'd even need such a thing?

Oh, I see--you have an artificial redline imposed by government regulators? I still doubt you can change that with the GS911. I've never seen the option, but then again in the USA I don't think there are limitation imposed.

I have found 2 models of GS911 on Amazon, with similar references (one ending by 204 the other by 205) but the second twice as expensive as the first one. Any clue for this difference?
There's a "professional" version with unlimited VIN slots and an "enthusiast" version with ten available VIN slots, so that may explain the difference. Unless you are running a BMW bike repair shop, the enthusiast version is what you need.
There is a phone app called motoscan, but the GS-911 goes deeper than any other system, as far as seeing live data, changing parameters, pulling codes, etc.
these were made, I'm guessing BEFORE the iphone, AND windows. so, plug and play is non existent. and like John says: it's the only way to access codes, etc on these bikes, AND it does work...
