Second cake... Uh... Deconstruct and put into some sort of layered dessert concoction with pudding, mousse, whipped cream or something. That's really all its good for at that point.
@@a_lethe_ion The main reason people are willing to pay so much for a cake is because they don't know how to decorate a cake to look nice and pretty, so they pay someone who does. If you receive a cake that is a hot mess and you don't know how to fix it, then the cake is unusable.
The first cake is beautiful! It looks way similar to the one you asked for. The second cake is a disaster 😳 it’s falling apart and the color is totally off...
Home bakery had a prettier presentation. Even if the brick and mortar one had stayed together there are a lot of things that make it hard to tell what I'm even looking at. The sugar, butter cream, and decals all blend together. And the only thing that pops out is the strawberries. What I like about the home bakery is that they took the time to think about the color. Because I can see the gold on one clearly the other not so much. I also appreciate the touch if the candle. It's not like the ones you get in the packs at Walmart. And it matches the cake. Home baker's wins in my book.
Just some recommendations for your videos. I think the viewer needs to see a some close up shots of what you are talking about. For example you made a comment comparing the gold edges but we as the viewer cannot see. Also when you cut the cake we never got to see the inside. I would have loved to see the cake you made pop up a few more times as a reminder of what you were actually comparing them to. I think you are great and are great at doing videos. Taking time to do some close up shots would be so much more fun for us to watch. Seeing a nice close up of the inside would have been a rewarding moment. I know it takes more work to edit but your channel will blow up with subscribers! I know you didn't ask for feedback. I just think your great and could be amazing!
I've come across this trend of ordering two cakes and reviewing them but it's alway by people who have no baking experience, just doing it for fun. I'm loving your professional breakdown of each cake. I learned so much! I hope you do more of these! Also, if you could contact the home baker on that box I'd love to know where she gets them for my cakes!
Nah I would eat it cause probably because this was a big moment for them to believe in themselves to pursue their dreams and they weren’t afraid to make mistakes to get better along the way. That’s just me. 🤷♀️😂
Good point! I also believe the nice packaging had better climate control, too. But on the negative side, it probably added to the cost, but I think was worth those few dollars. And that candle! A sweet touch, and personally, I loved the candid footage when her breath blew out the flame. It seemed a metaphor in general for how regardless of what you know or try, make room for mistakes. The baker on this channel is one smart cookie and appealingly kind.
@@intheflatfield3851 plus I actually never eat cake or many baked goods, same with anything outside of water since I only drink water. First, congrats on the 1000 subscribers 👏! My daughter is a home baker. I KNOW how much went into that cake. I am very proud of that home baker! Especially when their cake is top notch.
The thing is that home sellers tend to put more effort for the reputation while professional bakers kind of already have their own reputation and their own copy paste recipes for everything.
The home baker deserves 👏 . Yes she used a different product but her talents came through. Pro bakeries so so. We need to support more home talent bakers. They are hidden talent.
I mean...for the home baker cake...that's still pretty amazing and well delievered. I'd give it a five star review. It's definitely the one I'd be proud to show off. So I give it to them. Go home baker!
Wow I've never seen one of these videos done by an actual baker, it's nice to hear more about actual technique and what goes into the products. I love it when smaller creators pop up in my recommended.
I think it is a win for the home baker, because although she didn't use the sugar sheet technique, her cake remained presentable and the white bc gives it a nice contrast. Kudos to the bakery for attempting the sugar sheet technique in the middle of a busy schedule!! I think what happened with their sugar sheet was that they probably used regular granulated sugar instead of sugar crystals, and probably did not have enough time to set. Composition wise, the bakery's cake lacks some contrast, it's more a one tone design.
Idk how it works for bakers but when I worked as a graphic designer, we were told never to do “exactly like the photo” unless it was the clients own artwork they were requesting to be remade. 3 things had to be changed or made differently.
There’s always a debate about this! Some bakeries (professional/home baker) will say straight away that they will not replicate, but will make something similar. Others say they will do it exactly (or as close as possible).
As a pastry chef I personally hate to copy someone else’s work exactly. It makes it boring because there is no freedom of expression. Plus what if I think I can do something but it for some reason doesn’t work out. I never want someone to be unhappy with my work. I would rather say I can try to make it as similar as possible.
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe to me, this type of decoration is an artwork, so thats why I think copying that is like a bit lazy minimum and copyright violation if its sold without attributing the original
P.S. It's obvious subs refer to yt. It would have been hilarious if they'd simply searched it, found your tutorial, and actually made an exact replica (unless you privatized it for the purpose of this video). 😉
I think you were very kind. The “professional” cake was everything but professional looking. If I had ordered this for an event it would have been a catastrophe. Honestly, I can’t believe they let it leave their bakery, as they told you they could recreate it exactly. The home baker, hands down was the better cake.
Home baker did make it look like the picture. The other one didn’t work. So they should have just said sorry it not working. Maybe did a sugar designs on the side. The home baker had it by looks
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe After all you did ask for it too look like your cake. Honestly, I would never charge a person for a cake that it fell it apart. Like the shop. I would say look it frosted here some sugar candy we made to go with it. Sorry we tried but it did not work out.
First, I appreciate you doing this video. People often discount/count out us home bakers just because we do not have a building/bakery/store front. But alot of us put time and effort into learning new techniques and are very good at what we do. Thank you
Amazing how well the home baker recreated this, even using the wafer paper and not the sugar sheeting! I know which one I would have preferred to get :)
Just found you the other day - looks like you're WELL beyond that 1K subs now!! So cool to see, and I'm happy to join your growing community. Awesome videos!
I hope you left the home bakery a good review! Their cake was beautiful. Definitely what a customer would prefer out of these two. Do you give them feedback as a baker about how wafer paper doesn't react well with moisture and the professional bakery about making sugar sheet thinner? I think that would be really helpful for two small businesses to know that info.
The $63 cake looks like a train wreck and as I hate coffee, I wouldn't have wanted the mocha flavor. Even ignoring the sugar sheet problem, I thought the top of that cake looked messy. I don't do what you did and the minute I saw it, I recognized that they hadn't made the top the way you had. That chocolate thing sitting on the strawberries took away from them completely. Just messy looking. They other one looked great.
As a home Baker I do want to mention that we ask for a deposit because we don’t always have the ingredients on hand like a store front would. It helps us a lot. I think I’m biased but the home Baker was wonderful.
I will say that it is admirable that the professional bakery took the courage of doing the sugar sheet. The fact that it collapsed is admittedly disappointing but even then If I had asked it for an party or something like that I would probably still serve it, since if you took the parts that were fallen of I could be passed as a texture effect onto the side of the cake instead of being meant to rise above it
Congrats on 1000 subs. I love the homebaker. That is inexpensive in my area. That is the price of a bare basic non customized smallest cake from a bakery. They run double that here for a customized one that is the size on the left. I think the sugar work would add more money on top of that bc the customized is really just adding your name and picking colors to a standard cake(s) options and flavors. Homebaker for the win congrats to them.
How else will you know what's going on? This was an experiment, obviously, and by doing this video with this amount of talking, it's easier to understand. She basically hits every topic needed.
This is a great and informative video! I’m not a pro baker so I really liked that you’re able to explain the technique and compare/contrast in a clear manner. Really felt like I learned a lot throughout!
I really enjoyed listening you discussing about not just the looks and taste of the cake, but specifically the customer service as well as the cake details such as the wafer paper and sugar sheet. I didn’t know what those cake mediums were !
Just subscribed after watching this. You were very kind in your constructive criticisms, where some might have been harsh. While I do appreciate the fact that the professional bakery did try to do the sugar sheet technique, they failed and also didn't notify you that there may be differences to the original. The home bakery gets my vote, as they let you know upfront that cherries weren't in season, and that they may not be able to replicate the cake exactly. It also looks tastier, to me. I can tell they took their time and tried to get things to be as perfect as they could make them. The professional one looks rushed, in my opinion. While I understand that professional/storefront bakeries have a lot of orders, they should never rush in making an order for someone. When someone orders a cake from a bakery, they expect it to be what they ordered and to look nice and taste good for their special event. How embarrassing and heartbreaking would it be if they purchased a special cake for their party or their loved one, and got the one on the left! It would be a very sad day for everyone, but especially for the person who ordered it. There are moments in your life that you don't ever forget...they may not be at the forefront of your mind, but they come back to haunt you at times. This would qualify as one of them if you were so proud to bring out the cake, and it was a total disaster. I mean, think about how upsetting that would be when you wanted something really nice for your loved ones/guests, and it wasn't worth the money you paid for it. The cake is usually the star attraction at most parties, and it would be a horrible let-down if it was a mess.
Actually I think the home baker did a better job even though they didn’t use the sugar sheet technique. I believe they probably realized that the sugar sheet may not hold up over time because of refrigerator moisture and possible weather conditions (as we saw happen in the other cake). Also, the boxing of the cake was much better and the adding of the candle was a really nice little touch. It also sounds like the communication was better with the home baker. As a customer, I would appreciate the extra effort that went into the home bakers cake, so that is the one I would choose.

I was just passing by knowing jack about cakes except I love to eat them. Thanks for giving such a balanced and positive review, I learned a lot and your delivery and persona is 100% charming.
Even I learned a few things from this. My biggest lesson learned was: take a photo at the bakery. 😭 The second lesson: thoroughly understand the physics of the media you’re using. That home baker's cake wins hands down! And I know nothing about cake pricing, but I've seen from another channel cakes that went over the $200 mark so I was quite surprised they were both under 100. It looks like they both take a lot of time and skill!

When asked for exactly, I always say I can try, but not sure if it will be exactly the same, the only places I have seen can make exactly the same cake over n over is places like Walmart, the bakeries in I think China where they kick out 100's of the exact cake on an assembly line, and those using edible image printers.... But anything done homemade, by hand, from scratch, is never the same. I can try to get the color, flavors, and inspiration as close as I can. I also will turn down a request for something I have not yet learned or mastered. I have never tried modeling chocolates, rice paper, Sugar Sheets, not very good with - fondant, sugar glass or wafer paper, but I am practicing to get better. Buttercream I where I shine the best... And fruit fillings is a definite, not till I do more research, as my last cake weeped a lot lol
Oh but for those two cakes, I think the home baker didn't do the sugar sheet, and if they had attempt it, why not say, I tried and was not able to make it exactly. Kudos to the bakeries turned down the request not knowing how to work with sugar sheets, and kudos to the bakery who tried. You said at first inspection of the cake it was standing. It just didn't hold up, and you know they at least tried. I would prefer an honest baker... I made a Mike and Sully cake for my grandmson I call Monster Man's first birthday. I even made 2-4' tall Sully's and 2-1' tall Mike's that floated from balloons, made some other monsters and agents from the Monster Inc movie. It was such a hit. I did it again for his 3rd birthday reusing all the decorations from the first party, but I ordered the cake as I didn't have time to make it. I asked for a chocolate cake, buttercream frosting, and if she could do a monster Inc theme. She quickly said, 'I can not make a cake and call it Monster inc. as Disney has all rights to that. And I could be sued... But I can make a cake, with hand piped figures that closely resemble the monsters in question. But I can't make exact or I can be sued...." To which I was like good enough... It was so close Everyone thought it was perfect. And for $60 on a full sheet cake with actual buttercream (not shortening based) frosting, with hand pipped furry monster and a smooth round green monster she did amazing... But in all fairness, she was a home baker who just bought a store/closed down bakery with maybe 2 helpers. So she was more in touch with her customers, then you get with a big store bakery.
😂😂 I never thought SO many people would see that part. That’s so cool that you teach voice! I’m an elementary music teacher. Today is actually the dress rehearsal of our school’s musical.
I really enjoyed this video and how you took the time to explain everything. Your review and analysis were very genuine and you judged both cakes fairly.
I was wondering could you use the sugar sheet technique with maybe a wafer paper, fondant, gum paste backing for support? I mean, one side sugar sheet and the other side, kind of like a layering effect. I tend to work with a lot of modeling chocolate on my cakes, but I’m interested in trying out other decorating products so I’m curious if layering different products would work together? What do you think? Did I just come up with a new technique? 😂 I love working with sugar and isomalt but I’m always concerned about the softening factor.
I wonder if that would work?? Possibly? Support with the sugar sheet is definitely an issue in different temperatures, but I have also seen them stand up until they were eaten so I know it’s possible! When I work with isomalt (like the pre-made kind) I find it stays super super hard. Sugar work is no joke for sure though. I’ve always wanted to take some sort of sugar art course. Thanks for your insight!! 💕🥰
I prefer the professional bakery. (I was thinking the cakes were gonna be the other way around though.) It’s mostly for the colors I’ll admit and the chocolate plaque. It’s a shame it didn’t stand up. That wouldn’t have gone over well if the cake was for something more important. Glad to see the home bakery was the closest match and theirs did actually stand. Good job!
Love your channel! As a home baker, I'm curious if you know the Cottage Food laws for your state? I would love to know how they differ from where I live in Florida. I started a home bakery, but there are a lot of restrictions like not allowing dairy (cream or butter) in the frosting. No fresh fruit filling or fresh fruit on top. I love to bake but hate all of the red tape until I work out of a commercial kitchen. I do completely understand all of the food risks and why home bakeries are restricted though.
Instead of using the water paper for the heart they could have also covered a heart-shaped cookie with red sanding sugar, maybe mixed with some luster dust. That would have been much more successful than the curled paper heart...
For me The Home Baker deserved the 5star, bcuz the standind tall of the design is important for me espesially during pictorials that A MUST in every occations

Second cake... Uh... Deconstruct and put into some sort of layered dessert concoction with pudding, mousse, whipped cream or something. That's really all its good for at that point.
welll you can fix it. take the sugar sheet off and put chocolate sheet on. just to hide it. won't look the same but at least it's saved
Yes, it was a sad day for that cake 😬.
I hope you let that no review home baker a great review! It was beautiful!!
I sang them praises for sure!
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe was the cake with the strawberries in the middle a yellow cake?
I like the first one!! It looks more professional.
I agrreee! Well said! ✨👏🏼
Thanks, Susan. I’ve definitely learned a lot since I uploaded this video!
Right, I was looking for an insert or a few side by sides, but otherwise good content
Same here those boxes are perfect
Can't imagine the tears if the second cake was ordered for an actual event. They should not have taken the job.
I have had people get super upset for a lot less at bakeries I’ve worked at!
By the baker, I think 😅
Nah I would eat it cause probably because this was a big moment for them to believe in themselves to pursue their dreams and they weren’t afraid to make mistakes to get better along the way. That’s just me. 🤷♀️😂
Wow, from the packaging alone I absolutely thought the home bakery was the pro bakery, do that telling enough in itself
I LOVE that packaging.
The sad thing about the second one is if it was for someone's actual event...they would have been really disappointed and probably ask for a refund.
Nah I would still eat it. It’s gonna get destroyed anyways as long as it tastes good then how it looks shouldn’t matter more. 🤷♀️😂
@@kimecosx we don't care about you, they are talking about bringing a cake to an actual event not stuffing your face by yourself.
@@intheflatfield3851 plus I actually never eat cake or many baked goods, same with anything outside of water since I only drink water. But I would still eat the cake it wasn’t perfect cause I would support the business owners for taking risks to gain experience and skills compared to someone reading what to do and never acting on what they know they’re supposed to be doing. 🤦♀️😂
@@kimecosx if I’m paying for a cake for my sisters birthday, and it looked like that, I’ll be embarassed
@@kittycoutourxxx2706 then if your sisters don’t appreciate it and eat it like I would and laugh and have fun and enjoy the time we have together then maybe it isn’t the cake being perfect that you’re really worried about...Maybe it’s the temperament control and humble nature people lack around you you’re probably more concerned about. Idk you but that’s what I get outta people tripping over something that’s gonna get destroyed anyways..what should matter more is if it’s not gonna make you sick and it tastes delicious. 😁👌 especially the memories being made in the moment. Ahaha thank you
The home baker's cake.
They don't always buy in big bulk like a business. So they can asked a little bit more.
That’s true but they also don’t have the expensive overhead of employees and a storefront.
The thing is that home sellers tend to put more effort for the reputation while professional bakers kind of already have their own reputation and their own copy paste recipes for everything.
I think they both tried hard but the first one was my favorite!
For sure! They gave it their best go. Nice to hear from you, Laura! 🥰
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe thank you! I’ve learned so much from all of your videos. Can’t wait to try new techniques
The difference in size is pretty interesting. The homemade does look tastier though. Also congrats on going from 1k to 14k in 4 months.
Thank you!! 🥰
Right...like the pro cake slice didn't even hold, like what is that about?
The first one nailed it. Forget about the sugar sheet the second one made, it didn't workout. Home bakery all the way.✌✌✌✌
Wow I've never seen one of these videos done by an actual baker, it's nice to hear more about actual technique and what goes into the products. I love it when smaller creators pop up in my recommended.
Thanks so much for watching! I’m so happy you appreciated my critique 😊
I think the first cake looked much smoother. It’s tighter and neater. You can tell they took their time making it nice and smooth.
Thank you for your insight! :)
@@jljacobs0127 meh, they’re not paying you to have fun with your baking. They’re paying for a product.
@@ThunderStruck15 I understand that completely
I can't get over the wrong colour icing and wrong size heart on the second cake, especially when they didn't disclaim the way the first bakery did!
P.S. It's obvious subs refer to yt. It would have been hilarious if they'd simply searched it, found your tutorial, and actually made an exact replica (unless you privatized it for the purpose of this video). 😉
P.P.S. How much would your cake have cost? I don't recall you mentioning in your original vid
I was thinking about that! I didn’t privatize the video so they could’ve easily found it if they looked it up. 🥰
Yeah, back then I didn’t have a pricing guide. I think I would charge $100.00 for a 6 inch. It’s a tricky technique to get right!
I agree, offering to do something else probably would’ve been the better route.
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe After all you did ask for it too look like your cake.
Honestly, I would never charge a person for a cake that it fell it apart. Like the shop. I would say look it frosted here some sugar candy we made to go with it. Sorry we tried but it did not work out.
That anticipation when you opened the professional bakers cake box!
I was trying to build it up!!! I was actually pretty anticipatory about it too 😂
First, I appreciate you doing this video. People often discount/count out us home bakers just because we do not have a building/bakery/store front. But alot of us put time and effort into learning new techniques and are very good at what we do. Thank you
You’re welcome! 🥰💕
I would be so scared and embarrassed if my cake somehow made it on here and it was not done right 😅😭
Amazing how well the home baker recreated this, even using the wafer paper and not the sugar sheeting! I know which one I would have preferred to get :)
They did make it look very close!! 💕
Just found you the other day - looks like you're WELL beyond that 1K subs now!! So cool to see, and I'm happy to join your growing community. Awesome videos!
Thanks so much, David! 🥰
They both turned out really pretty for how complicated the design seems :)
Can I just point out that this video is less than a year old and you have OVER 53k! Way to go! So excited for you!
Thank you so much, Natalie! It’s been pretty awesome!!! 💕🥰
Congrats on the 1k subscribers. That’s my goal in the next 6 months.
You’re sooo talented and I’m loving your context.
You can do it!! It’s all about consistency. Thanks so much 🥰
The $63 cake looks like a train wreck and as I hate coffee, I wouldn't have wanted the mocha flavor.
Home Bakery...hands down! And I’m not just saying that because I’m a home baker.😂
Wait...you grew so much in less than 6 months! 1k to 15k?! Wow! Congrats!
Thank you!! 🥰
She's at 35k now! It's amazing!
I like the first one better it looks beautiful 😍
The $75 cake looks much more elegant and sharper.
Loved the home bakery cake! Their packaging is amazing!
Their packaging was so so secure!
There’s so much talking 😩 had to skip through the video. A shorter video would catch most people’s attention.

This is a great and informative video! I’m not a pro baker so I really liked that you’re able to explain the technique and compare/contrast in a clear manner. Really felt like I learned a lot throughout!
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching :)
I really enjoyed listening you discussing about not just the looks and taste of the cake, but specifically the customer service as well as the cake details such as the wafer paper and sugar sheet. I didn’t know what those cake mediums were !
So glad you enjoyed it!! 🥰
Thank you so much for your insights! :)
I LOVE THE HOME BAKERY ONE THEY DID SUCH AN AMAZING JOB!!!

Loved the video, very interesting to see the opinion of an expert baker! I watched lots of similar videos but just from non-baker youtubers
Even I learned a few things from this. My biggest lesson learned was: take a photo at the bakery. 😭 The second lesson: thoroughly understand the physics of the media you’re using. If the authentic copy had been bone dry, it would have retained its shape. 😥 That’s so sad. I hate to see anyone fail after trying so hard.

The first one is so pretty!
You, singing: "just kidding I'm not going to put you through that"

😂😂 I never thought SO many people would see that part. That’s so cool that you teach voice! I’m an elementary music teacher. Today is actually the dress rehearsal of our school’s musical.
Home backers turned out beautiful.
Definitely the cake on the right!
If you find out where the home baker got her delivery box, can you add it in the description? I love it!!
Oh yes! I really should just add that to the description. I know I’ve answered that a couple times!
Very good attempts but I could see how it was so difficult to do!
So tricky!! 🥰
The best and worst part is the occasional chunk of sugar sheet that abandons ship when she's not looking.
I really enjoyed this video and how you took the time to explain everything. Your review and analysis were very genuine and you judged both cakes fairly.
Thank you so much for your kind words 🥰
Did you find out where the box is from 🤗🤗🤗
I was wondering could you use the sugar sheet technique with maybe a wafer paper, fondant, gum paste backing for support?
I love the look of the first cake! I can't believe it's only $75
I prefer the professional bakery. Good job!
Thank you for your insight! :)
I live in Canada and within the province they actually have different food safety laws within various municipalities. :)
Thank you! 😊
The cake you made is one of a kind
Aw thank you! 🥰
11:41 I saw the face she made when she saw the cake and I said to myself “Oh no….” 🤣🤣🤣
I am learnng sooo much from you!
Instead of using the water paper for the heart they could have also covered a heart-shaped cookie with red sanding sugar, maybe mixed with some luster dust. That would have been much more successful than the curled paper heart...
"I just wanted it to look EXACTLY like the cake" that's not always possible especially from a home bakery
For me The Home Baker deserved the 5star, bcuz the standind tall of the design is important for me espesially during pictorials that A MUST in every occations
