Why shoot film in 2024 (or ever)?

- Should we shoot photos and videos on celluloid film, now that we have great digital cameras with spectacular resolution and low-light capabilities for next to nothing?
To try and find out, after 15 years of shooting exclusively digital, I get myself a huge beast of a camera, a bag of film and head over to one of the prettiest islands in the Croatian archipelago.

The thing I love most about shooting with the 67 is that I am forced to slow down and really think about my composition, really think about the light. Then meter the shot, wind the film, frame it and when you press that shutter button, you can feel confident that you got the shot you intended to get. The process of each shot is so enjoyable, it really makes photography feel like an art form again.
True! And I miss it for those exact reasons.
vastly underrated, I expected half a million views or something my guy. Very well produced, informative and enjoyable
Thank you so much Riley, very humbled by your comment 🥲❤. We'll get there, view by view!
I had an Alfa Romeo Spint at the a same time as owning a Vespa 250 E. It’s true the Alfa had problems 😔. But my road bike is a German Canyon and it’s very efficient and a ruthless speed machine!
I’ve been a film photographer for 30yrs but I didn’t do much with the dawn of digital until the film renaissance and now back with film using a Pentax MX and Rolleicord TLR. I’m loving being back 😊 - slowing the process right down and being very intentional
„Why would anyone with a sane mind choose the next door girl/ boy when a perfect model lay at our fingertips?“ I’ve been riding a vintage speed bike since I bought it new, when it was not vintage and I have been using film cameras since about the same time as a teenager. When digital came up, I enjoyed the new possibilities - but boy, do I enjoy sitting at the pc editing „that vintage look“ or do I enjoy the process of creating real world artefact images (even if it’s painful at times and film really got expensive, quite like back in prewar times)? Is analog perfect? Nope - but is digital perfect? Nope - at least not for me, as much as I love the new possibilities… very nice and personal vid on the topic, thanks for posting!
Thank you Senti mental, I appreciate your time! 🤗
Excellent video. Your subscribers are coming soon! Please hold on. Your work is very special. Thank you.
Such a fun video! Shot 5:50 ooof😍
Glad you like it 😉
I had been shooting medium format film for years before I started shooting professionally.
I shot weddings with three Mamiya TLR cameras and 180/80/55mm lenses. When my three wedding cameras wore out, I replaced them with two RB67 SLRs and 180/90/50mm lenses.
When the digital age began, I did not stop shooting film.
I still use my two RB67 cameras.
This is really, really well put together and presented. I enjoyed every minute of it. Yes, RB’s are big, heavy, and slow. But, the negatives!
I'm very glad and humbled by your comment. I appreciate it and hope you love the other episodes that are coming :)
My lord, this video was a direct injection of existential wisdom, a euphoria of pure joy. I've been a casual film shooter for almost 9 years now (excluding childhood), and the thoughts you share in this video added fuel to the film fire.
Thank you very much for the kind words Eric! 🤗
I loved this video! So entertaining and funny. How you do that in a language that isn't your native tongue is seriously impressive. Keep putting these out there!
Thanks for the kind words Joseph! 🤗 Next episode is in production, I hope you like that one as well ;)
Film photography really shines in the medium and large formats. While 35mm is fun to shoot, I think Digital is on par with 35mm.
Bro you rock! This video was pleasure to watch. Informative and fun in the same time. Keep up the good work. I’m looking forward to watch your next video.
Wonderful shots - and sheep bleat. Bleeping sheep. Counting sheep didn't let you sleep. Etc. I would love to know where you were when you did these photos - such a lovely and remote area. Thanks for the video - enjoyed it immensely.
Very humbled by your comment, I appreciate it 🤗. Next episode coming sokn, I hope you like that one as well.
The location for this is island called Cres, in Croatia (Europe). Shot around places called Osor, Lubenice, Merag

Beautifully done
Dhan'yabāda Saikat! :) I hope I spelled this correctly.
A very fun, relatable, and gorgeous video! You've summarized the joys and frustrations of film photography perfectly.
Thank you for the kind words! 🤗
This was 12 minutes and 12 seconds well spent! Very nicely done, and I like the images and the storytelling equally!
Very humbled by your comment 🤗, thank you so much!
You have given us a very enjoyable video. Good story telling, thoughts about film, good views all around, and the song that was intertwined... good stuff and fun time. Thanks!

Thank you Toni, I appreciate it 🤗. I just started a few months ago (the channel IS old but nothing happened here) so I trust, in time, folks will come
@@alexander.starbuck I've been to Croatia only once, in 2010 if I remember correctly. I wish I had a better camera with me at the time. I'm in Finland if you're wondering. Of all the places I've been to, the area around Split was very much to my liking. The fact that film is very resilient to overexposing and highlight clipping combined with the awesome scenery makes me wish I'd be there again having a looooooong holiday.
@@pioni2 Finland sounds very exciting!
I only really started with photography when the pandemic hit. I needed a reason to go out and walk other than to get exercise and escape the four walls. So I bought a cheap used digital and immediately fell in love with photography. But the more I shot, the more I realised the look I was going for was vintage. So I bought a film camera and now I'm addicted to both digital AND film.
Is film a pain in the back end? Yes. Is it expensive? Yes. Could I achieve the same results with digital- almost definitely I think. But somehow I am utterly in love with film in a way that I am not with digital. The loading, the waiting, the winding on- it's all somehow more involving and pleasurable than shooting with my Sony A7ii. Not that I will be giving that up though- my love for film may be greater but I still love the digital too.
So far I have only experimented with 35mm but medium format will be next.
Also, I also used to buy Total Guitar!
They each have their own place (and pace) 😉. It's important that you enjoy what you use!
Fantastic channel and videos! Happily subscribed just now. Thank you for your good and entertaining videos. Looking forward to your next film photography adventures.

Glad you like it! 🤗 New episode coming in a few days
Just returning to film after 3 decades and love your video, photography and sentiments. I sold my Mamiya in 1990 and got very little for it. Now cannot afford one!🤣But so glad you scored an RB67! I’ll be using a Pentax K1000. Your work is painterly. Love it.
Thank you Chana, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I hope you manage to score another Mamiya, they are incredible satisfying machines (but the Pentax will do as well :) )
I was lucky that I bought my RB67 just before the prices of film cameras went nuts. I got a body, with 2 film backs, and a 127mm lens, all in minty condition for just under $300.00. you'd be lucky to get the same for under $500 now...and some Ebay sellers are asking around $1,000.
Great production value here, good luck!
Edit: The ending gave me the goose bumps!
Thanks Bode, I appreciate it! 🤗
Great words at the end - i hear ya and i've recently gone back to shooting some film too.
Damn... subscribed.
You know, it's good sometimes to have just a few pictures from your childehood. My dad left me a heritage of 6000+ slides + various other photographs. I'd need weeks to go thru all of that...
6000?? 😍 Such a valuable heritage!!
@@alexander.starbuck Yep 😊
Great video. I currently shoot with a Sony a7iv and have a couple film cameras laying around. You've inspired me to incorporate film into my workflow. Thank you!
Always glat to hear my message inspires someone 🤗. Have fun!

Total Guitar days 🥲❤
I too love film, for many of the reasons you so wonderfully discuss in this great video. Frankly, there's a clinical look to digital images with amazing detail, but we simply don't see the world that way with our eyes. Film does a much better job (though not perfect) of mimicking what our eyes see. For many of us it's a most pleasing photo when we can imagine ourselves at that scene - hard to do that in a hyper-real digital photo. Good job with this video, enjoy the wonderful RB67, and what else is money for but to buy more film (and vintage cameras, of course)?
Thanks for the lovely comment 😊🤗 I wholeheartedly agree! And thanks for watching, I appreciate it
Hey bro, this is the best one in the series; let's keep it up! Just be careful with 120 films if you go by plane, use special boxes for those films, the scan machines can easily damage it.
Thanks bro! 🤗❤
@@alexander.starbuckI have carried 120 film back and forth internationally 4:50 for the last 40 years. Not once have I experienced film degradation as a result.
for the medium format my choice is 6x4.5, negative are still pretty large, and you've got 15 shots per roll
but large format 4x5 is kinda sweet stop in the realm of large formats imo, cameras aren't too big, yet you end up with huge size negatives with tons of details
I love this. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I’ve shot digital for a while but recently picked up a 35mm camera to give film a try! Looking forward to seeing the images eventually
Thank you for the kind words Avi! I am sure you will be happy when you get that film (or when you develop it yourself) :)
I still shoot my Pentax 645, just looks and feels feels like a real camera should. And, I get a nice size negative too.

What a great video, loved it. and as an owner of an RB67 I love the massive negatives they produce too, there's not much around that can beat them.

This video is so entertaining and well put together, I love your channel already
Thanks for the kind words Nathan, much appreciated! 🤗 I hope you'll stick around I'm about to film another episode soon
@@alexander.starbuck great!! Looking forward too it!
I started out with the RB67 as well! never had the 90 but made do with a wide/tele combo in the 65 & 180 - I also ignored the internet's advice on size and weight and even hiked through Great Sand Dunes with the beast - I will say that the Hasselblad 500CM is much nicer to hand-hold but I do miss the size of 6x7 at times, still square format is well worth trying out as it really changes how you compose an image!
Hi Nate! Yessss, Hassy is a really really nice machine, I owned a 500C about 10 years ago but I never did get along with the square.... The more I do this, the more I realise that 4:3 is my favorite frame so I'm seriously considering a Mamiya 645 🤩
Nice one Alexander :) It seems we are quite a few coming back to film again especially during or before the pandemic. Its kind of fun to see all the youtube videos dedicated to film and sharing a similar story. I liked your version a lot. well put together and i share and agree with most if not everything you say regarding film. I always had a nagging feeling of loss when i left film back i the day for digital, and while i loved some models and grew a lot from learning photography on those cameras, i felt like coming home picking up an analog film body once again. My first being the Nikon Fe2 and the Nikon F100 ( which was the last analog body i had before going digital), most likely like you i added quite a few since then, but the favorites id have to say is my Rolleiflex T75, the Nikon FM3a and my Konica Pearl 4. At least for now hehe.
You got new subscriber today. keep it up :)
/regards Martin the swede.
Tack så mycket Martin! :) Very nice workds and I hope you like the new episodes I have planned. (Nikon and Leica are probably the only major brands I have never owned nor tried. I must dig a bit deeper there hehe).
@@alexander.starbuck hehe Varsågod:D Im sure i will, i like your style of making your videos. Im SO not used to being in front of a camera ( mostly on the other side lol ), so while i wish i would be confident enough( maybe at some point) to deliver my points like you do, at this point i will make voiceovers only ;) I have tried SO many cameras as im sure you have as well, but the brands i have worked the most with would be Nikon, leica and Fuji overall. Nikon might be a bit "boring" if you compare to some other analog cameras even though looking quite classic, but they are very reliable and well made in my experience, so just feels like a safe and stabile bet when in doubt on what to shoot. The only analog leica i have used is an M4 which i regret selling. Mostly because of the built quality though, cannot really say i produced better pictures with it. Otherwise my digital M240 is a nice cameras as far as digital cameras go, and probably the most inspiring i have next to my Nikon Df. If you have any questions regarding Nikon just shoot, you should definitely try one at some point, id recommend a FM2 or FE2 or an FM3a even though they are crazy expensive these days.
Have a great summer, regards Martin.
@@martinandreasson5504 Haha I had the same issue as you - camera shy and everything looked ridiculous to me, when I watched later. BUT, the greatest thing I learned through this process is, just do it. Turn on the camera, no preparations, carry it in your hands around the house, just talk stupid stuff. You dont even have to look at it later, just get used to the process and to that device, honestly. In no time it will become second nature to you, it will even become a bit boring and you will make a great presenter. trust me!
FM's are wonderful, I'd love to test one! And for Leicas.... M2+35 and M3+50 would be my dream setup. 😍
@@alexander.starbuck hehe thanks again Alexander :) You might have given me the courage to try at one point., im actually trying to compile a little "favorite film camera" list to film as a fast and fun episode , and the thought it its not going to be a lot of free filmed stuff, but just me with a mic and with webcam perhaps. Not sure how im going to shoot it as i most likely have to use the mic i have for sound. Dont have any loose mics for the other cameras right now, only for my mac. So that might be the first time i try being in front .Lets see how that goes ;) im quit a novice when it comes to sound and setup for filming etc, so the stuff i have done have been with a X-T1 and a iPhone but now upgraded at least to an external mic lol. But i will try and make it work :)
and yes drewl, the M2 and M3 are such classic cameras, never had a M2 or M3, but just the M4 which i loved. Now i use the Voigtlander R2a with some leica lenses for film , its nice, but not an M ;)
Have a great summer!

Good thing about this videos is if you miss a friend you can always check one of their videos again 😁
I've been photographing for 45 years now. Just today, I was mentioning to a friend to a friend how digital imaging has made me a lazier photographer in general and that I should go back to shooting film to revitalise that part of my brain which has gone dormant too long.
this is such a beautifully shot video!

Impressive video and work. Film stock can be found in the UK (via post) at Harrison Cameras, London Camera Exchange. For a wider range of film try Analogue Wonderland. The song used has me hooked who and what is it?

Stumbled upon this just now, I'm a film shooter and thought it was one of the best things I've seen in a while. Good fun, good personality and lovely compositions on your shots! Your description at the end nailed it for me. The best things in life are worth waiting for, and when you spend time considering your framing, subject, mood and lighting, and how many shots you've got left in the can, your photos are going to be waaaay better than most digi snaps.
Keep on doing what your doing, its great, and get some cream for your nipples! 😁
Thank you so much for the kind words Fraser, I appreciate it! 🤗 Some new episodes in the pipeline, I hope they keep up the quality standard.
Keep up the great work Alexander! T.Hopper channel would fit nicely in your growing list.

What the heck did you have in that giant backpck? All your worldly possessions?
🤣 Omnia mea mecum porto! Yes, I agree that my Shimoda Xplore is a TAD BIT on the large side but I love that bag! I put all the stuff in there with room to spare
After shooting film for some time, even when I pick my digital camera I only shoot 5-10 pics :))
It changes you, making you to value each frame, forcing you to fire that shutter only but only when you find that composition you truly like.
Exactly! 😉

Another great one, each better and better! How do you charge the batteries on these kind of adventures?
I actually charge all that I can with my car (cigarette lighter) charger! Phone is a simole affair, laptop stays home and camera is charged through it's USB port. For the drone I have 3 batteries which is usually enough but I have a car charger for that one as well 😁
He doing all on film, no battery he needs;))))
i like film too. I am doing BW film , developing and wet printing in a darkroom myself. Now i am getting into color film. Also started printing RA4 color process, its alot of fun and learning the process . Digital is abit boring to me now
I would LOVE to get into wet process but no space at the time, unfortunately 😒
@@alexander.starbuck ja radim u kupatilu, bolje ako nema prozor.
I love film because of how it looks and it forces me to slow down and think about my shots. What's worthy of me shooting on film? With digital I can just clink away all day and not lose a beat. But it defeats the purpose of going out and shooting. And to me, that is capturing the moment of a scene. Something special should be photographed and film forces me to look around more and think about what I want to shoot over digital. Though I can get some nice shots on digital and play with it a bit more as it costs less it's just not as fun to me as film is. Film just gives a unique look that can't be satisfied for me any other way. All the different brands and styles that can be had just by changing out a roll is something hard to recreate on digital without a lot of editing. Something I don't particularly care to do a lot of.
Completely agreed 🤗
Awesome video, just subscribed to your channel. BTW, what is the music that plays multiple times through the video? I just loved it!

@@alexander.starbuck it was a good one 👍
Excellent video and well produced. I echo previous comments. As an analogue dinosaur digital will never surpass the feel and quality of film. My 6 x 6 camera equates to 3600mp files per image, with tonal and dynamic range out of reach of the most expensive digitals. Digital has its appeal as convenient all singing all doing and captures the moment effortlessly , but wheres the creativity and sense of accomplishment. Digital misses the aura , the feel of film and the thought process that goes into each image.
Thank you for the kind words 🥲
Well done great video
Why, thank you John! Glad you liked it 🤗
I like digital, but I don't like the cameras themselves much. Film cameras are nicer to use, and will last a lifetime if you have a decent brand.
Honestly, shooting film is indeed a pain in the butt! But we are suckers for nostalgia and a bit masochists, so we do it anyways...
But at the same time it is strangely rewarding and satisfying 🤗
@@alexander.starbuck yes, it is

Nice thoughts but only shooting few frames is not good. Film can have defects! ISO not always true. How many rolls did you use on trip? Cost of the Mamiya Brick? (I used Mamiya's in 70's for pro work.) Your lab costs? Add that All up and surely digital away better solution. Geez! You could have printed pix at small kiosks. E-mailed to family. Easily make a book! Your opinion is yours! I love small cameras, few lenses and fun. My phone becoming very important. Best luck. Let's see some images.
Jason, thank you for your coment, I appreciate it! :) Actually, i have been shooting film for some odd 15 years or so, not just a couple of frames. Also, if you watched the whole video, you might have seen that the conclusion was NOT that film is better than digital (no thing is better than the other, it's just different). Cheers!
Good question; why bother with film? I don't, although I have about 10 film cameras, mostly Leica.
Ship 'em over, I'd love to test them in my following episodes 😉
@@alexander.starbuck Sorry my friend, not likely to happen. Too much danger of damage or loss in shipping from USA to UK.

shooting the film , is all about the print ... you must learn to print in the darkroom ... forget scanning and Digital world ... when you are shooting it will make you think how your image will look as a print ... the print is the goal !!
absolutely agree. I do all process by myself and cant tell you what gives me more pleasure; shooting or printing in darkroom!
What’s the shooting location?
Hi Sebastian, I shot this one on the island of Cres in Croatia. Thanks for watching! 🤗
I. need. to. know. where. you. got. that. hat.
Chippy 🤣, it's actually a women's hat, I borrowed it from a friend of mine. Glad you like it 🤗
If you really reminisce and love the old world’s charm of old school film photography, then buy a film camera.
But…the most stupid thing is to spend loads of money on high spec, over-priced, over-hyped modern DSLRs and mirrorless stuff, and the even more ridiculously priced modern, super sharp lenses,…to electronically imitate that old-school chemical-based looks😂😂😂
Humans.
But it’s really not like that. “Dslr scanning” is only one of the finishing routes one can take. It is totally possible to have a completely analog process, start to finish (a bit more difficult for color printing in the darkroom because of the paper availability but still possible).
The thing is, most of us (if not all) already own some sort of a digital camera, either for enjoyment or for professional work. Why not use it as a scanner, to share your film work? Or even as a way of expanding your printing options - you may not want to do a wet print but rather an inkjet, in which case you would need to scan the negatice. Cheers!
Did you try counting the sheep? 🐑
🥲 damn, never thought of that haha
wait-- i thought im in year 2026
Greaat!!!😁
really bad audio levels, other than that good video
80mm is definitely not tele for 6x7. Nice “cool” video video, but not explanation for choosing film.
I smoke weed, I do burn money.😢. I like my Canon A1
as a former Rover V8 , Ducati and Colnago owner its not about masochism, It's about romance. And film is the same. Unfortunately that kind of romance is expensive and that's why i now have a bus pass, a Trek and a digital camera....romance is dead, capitalism killed it.....
Of course it's romance 😉, I was joking a bit in the video. If I could choose, I'd only ever own Series Land rovers, Paul Smart Ducatis, vintage Piper Cub airplanes, more film cameras... In general--all the stuff made back in the day when engineers were like children, when they played and produced good, mechanical, tactile products, which weren't perfect but exuded their creator's passion. ❤
