  • Angel Olsen came to the Tiny Desk on an odd autumn day, as an impending storm loomed outside our office windows. It all seemed just right for occasion: Watch her and you'll see calm in her eyes; listen to her and you'll sense torment in her heart. Olsen gave us a preview of her third record on that October day; she wouldn't tell us the title, but she did say the word "Burn" with a hint of the title in the words to a song she'd sing. Now, months later and just a few weeks before the release of Burn Your Fire for No Witness, we can share this exclusive preview.
Olsen is a Missouri-born - and now Asheville, N.C.-based - musician via Chicago. The new record was produced by John Congleton with a new band featuring Josh Jaeger on drums and bassist Stewart Bronaugh. The trio began rehearsing these songs in a church turned recording studio in Asheville over the summer. The songs are at times explosive and at times lulling. At the Tiny Desk, the expressive and powerful singer stood alone, and in the process gave us the perfect way to first hear these songs. --BOB BOILEN

She has a very strong presence. I don't know what it is precisely, maybe it's a combination of everything, but her voice, her gaze, and the subject matter and composition of her music just immediately causes a hush. Like when someone says, "Shut up," followed immediately by something profound and impactful to say. She just calms rowdy people in a good way.

  • @BrotherSaturn
    @BrotherSaturn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +106

There's a lot of argument on this video about dynamics, and the fact that her songs are simple.
    Take St. Vincent for example.
St. Vincent's music has similar qualities, and she's one of the most incredible songwriters out there. What Angel has created, is something incredibly heart wrenching, and I love her story telling. It's nice to step back from all the hooplah of distortion and guitar pedals, and all that jazz.
For me It's about the songwriting , music has to tell a story. Everything else is secondary. What Angel Olsen does, is unique, and her guitar work isn't like jack white or anything, but the fact that her music is raw , is why I like it. It's not over dressed to be something else. it's a take it or leave it sort of thing.

Since when does “technically superior” translate to a better listening experience? I know plenty of guitarists who can fly across the fretboard-that doesn't mean I can listen to them run scales for more than a few minutes. Despite the simple arrangements, this young lady's performance is very well done. It's definitely a good listening experience.

Jesus, her guitar technique is entirely irrelevant. Her voice is absolutely chock full of technique that most singers don't and couldn't achieve in a lifetime of desperate grasping. Her phrasing, her texturing, and her Belief in every micro-unit of the expressive powers of her voice is remarkable. Her lyrics are very good, but it is her voice that makes them bleed and gush. Her's is the sound of cut flowers bending in deathly praise to time itself. So go eat your guitar technique and shit it out again in your golden bowl, you golden boys, but enjoy doing so alone for the rest of your life: whoever wishes to comment on her guitar technique.

Evrytime I turn on tiny desk I'm like
    New favorite
    New favorite
    New favorite
You are all so absolutely amazing
Can't even begin to express what this all means to me
Now that I finally found the truth
I'm sorry you had to feel all my confusion and pain
It was hard getting back home to all of you
I'm sorry for arriving a little late
    And not the greatest condition
    But I am
    And I am alive
    Bless you all be well

    It all just falls apart
But when I look into your eyes
    It pieces up my heart
If I only had an answer
To put it all to bed
I wish sometimes I could take back
    Every word I've said
I walk back in the night alone
Got caught up in my song
    Forgot where I was sleeping
None of the lights were on
I heard my mother thinking me right back into my birth
I laughed so loud inside myself it all began to hurt
So I turned on a picture show
    I disappeared the lines
    As memories came flooding in
The tears blew out my eyes
    I see an elevator
    A moment I am above
I look for you or someone
Who can still remind me of
The tight grip and the sun lick
And the calm way of all things summer
    When it's all here
    And it's all new
    And you're not hungover
    Fierce and light and young
    Fierce and light and young
When you don't know that you're wrong
Or just how wrong you are
    My feet are always heavy
As I inch toward the door
I thought we'd leave this for ourselves a hundred times before
But I guess we're always leaving even when we look the same
And it eases me somehow to know that even this will change
If you've still got some light in you then go before it's gone
Burn your fire for no witness it's the only way it's done
    Fierce and light and young
    Fierce and light and young
    Hit the ground and run
    Hit the ground and run

Don’t get the attacks at the strumming.. seems pretty obvious she’s intended to have the soft muted sound that strumming with the thumb makes.

purists will attack. in 1960s 1/2 the music world attacked Dylan. each musician is allowed their own craft.

Just seems a bit out of place next to her voice (which is lovely) is all I think. A teenager after a few weeks of lessons would be just as proficient at the guitar. The soft muting is intentional sure, but the progressions etc are just sloppy.

It's like listening to a recording from the distant past, evocative of songs gold miners might sing if they arrived during the worst part of the gold rush. You can almost hear scratches on the recording, even though there are none.

Why people are always comparing talented women with men, like... She is the female Orbinson... Gosh, NO, she is Angel Olsen, and she is amazing, and unique. If here MUSIC has something similar with an artist, ok, that's one thing, but, she is not a talented being LIKE a famous man. She is a talented woman, period.

    • @Crossley856
      @Crossley856 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Because many people have an inclination toward sharing commonalities, it's what bonds us as social creatures, and doing it thru music that resonates with you and reminds you of songs/artists of your youth makes you feel good, helps remember good times. People always point out similarities or comparisons wether it be stylistically, harmonically, or acknowledging a physicality that they recognize. Human beings are fond of ubiquitous and universal themes as they help the aforementioned bond between us strengthen because of their prevalence.
Or sometimes people like for other people to remind them of other people, and when other people agree, they feel like they pointed out something astute and that gives them a warm fuzzy feeling.

Nobody does that. It’s just your selective feminist mind. New artists are always compared to other more established regardless of the gender.

I quit my dreaming the moment that I found you
I started dancing just to be around you
Here's to thinking that it all meant so much more
I kept my mouth shut and opened up the door
I wanted nothing but for this to be the end
For this to never be a tied and empty hand
If all the trouble in my heart would only mend
I lost my dream, I lost my reason all again
It's not just me for you
I have to look out too
I have to save my life
I need some peace of mind
I am the only one now
I am the only one now
I am the only one now
    You may not be around
    You may not be around
    You may not be around
I am the only one now
I am the only one now
I am the only one now
I am the only one now
