Great lesson. EVH was a massive Holdsworth fan and these stretchy legato phrases are what Allan would use. He would use whole tone and diminished scales missing the notes in-between and skipping strings spanning huge intervals. Both incredible guitarists.
The closest to Eddie's tone, phrasing, and feel. You absolutely killed it! I've seen so many people cover this solo, but almost none of them capture Eddie's feel and phrasing.
I'm pretty sure he did it in one take too....make sure you pick your brain off the floor as it likely will melt out your ears after you think about that.
Seen this played by well over 100 pros and god knows how many intermediate players .one of the most famous riffs in rock history and this video is one of the best I’ve seen .take a bow your playing is awesome 👏
Excellent lesson. You covered the dynamics as well as the intricate details and including thumb and hand position. You're an excellent teacher. Thanks!
This was the part I needed to finish THE BEAT it GUITAR SOLO. I got it!! because this guy really slowed it down for us nice and clean, not like others that are going a hundred miles an hour. Great man let's Rock.
want to learn the van halen strech lick, watched 5 different "TH-cam-Teachers"...now i have seen 5 different versions of that lick. i think i try yours...you are so most sympathic.
Hi Cameron, Can't deny that this is one of the best versions I've heard of Eddie Van Halen's solo on Michael Jackson's " Beat It " single... I'm not a lead & rythm guitarist as I started out messing around on the drums until I was constantly pestered by my best friend , at the time , to pick up & play a bass guitar... I wasn't interested at all & I knew he only wanted me to play bass guitar because he needed a bass player to play with him when he played his electric guitar but I have to thank him for his persistence as when I finally gave in & picked up a bass guitar it just felt so at home & it was so natural for me & I soon discovered that I had subconsciously stored all these great bass guitar parts in my head for many year's while growing up & listing to different genres & these lines just came flooding out & I've been in love with the bass guitar since... But I also love all instruments & music genres & all the musician's who bring music alive & like everyone else on first hearing the solo for " Beat It " i knew something special had happened within the way guitar solo's could & would be played... It still amazes me to this day how certain instruments or a piece of music can really move us inside & it's just something you feel inside that pulls at your inner soul & if you don't feel this there's just no explaining it to those who unfortunately don't or won't want to feel it!.. To me " Music Is Life " end of story... I doubt you'll read this but if you do just one little side note... Though I'll never attempt this I enjoyed this break down very much & thank you for taking the time to pick an iconic & at the time ground breaking guitar solo... I don't know if it's on my side, as casting it to my TV or listening to it on my phone on TH-cam but the Volume of your Voice was difficult to make out while you were playing certain parts & I couldn't hear 100% what you were saying but it was still amazing to watch & listen to your interpretation of the late great Eddie Van Halen's , I'd say , most talked about guitar solo by musician's & just casual listeners also... In light of this still ongoing coronavirus stay safe and healthy to all of you all around the world... .....
Thanks Cameron! This is a crazy riff to play since you can't tell where it's going when played slow. I just did some legato thing to pull it off and was kind of close. Thanks for breaking it down!
2:14 Dude! I've been practicing this solo and that part is the part I've been struggling, and because of what you advice to do is to put the thumb in the bottom of the neck.. Now i can play the solo peacefully thanks a lot!
I've attempted learning this solo a few times and this particular section would stop me in my tracks because of the stretch but as you pointed out lowering the thumb on the neck is key. That was my problem after lowering my thumb I was able to reach those notes. Thanks!
That first and second stretch is a killer, that will take some time just to get that under your fingers, man that is a tough one. Great stretch lesson.
@@CameronCooper Yes Sir, these 64 year fingers take a while to get limbered up but its doable. I just go back and forth about 30 times and its a lot easier.

Bro your tone is spot on 🔥
Agreed..something so often kills a decent riff demo!!
And tasty
And his playing! Geez. Finally someone who nailed it
whhitestallion yea fr!
I ask him one time about the tone, and he said it is just a THR, which is sick!!!
This is the closest I’ve ever seen anyone get to this solo. Impeccable
note2owns I’ve watched him for years and he’s phenomenal, but I honestly don’t think he quite matches this
I concur. I don't think even the amazing Jennifer Batten gets as close as this. \m/ (:o)
Incredibly sick
I agree! 🤘
I always doubted if that could actually even be played live to the same standard. There goes that theory. 😭
Bruh, the tone is like listening to evh recording. Crazy.
RIP Eddie Van Halen he was an amazing guitarist
Great lesson. EVH was a massive Holdsworth fan and these stretchy legato phrases are what Allan would use. He would use whole tone and diminished scales missing the notes in-between and skipping strings spanning huge intervals. Both incredible guitarists.
It's crazy to hear Allans influences in Eddies playing and hear Eddies influences on Dimebags playing! And I love them all!
Yngwie Malmsteen was also influenced by Holdsworth as well.
I read somewhere that Eddie recorded this solo with an amp he borrowed from Holdsworth.
@@ricka5959 That is true. It was a Hartley Thompson amp.
@@davidlloyd9598 Cool, thanks for the info. You won't find that on Wikipedia :^)
The closest to Eddie's tone, phrasing, and feel. You absolutely killed it! I've seen so many people cover this solo, but almost none of them capture Eddie's feel and phrasing.
How Eddie came up with that solo is mind blowing. It’s unlike anything. I couldn’t play that if I practiced a hundred years.
Make it a hundred and one and youll get it
I'm pretty sure he did it in one take too....make sure you pick your brain off the floor as it likely will melt out your ears after you think about that.
break it down into smaller segments and then practice each segment
Ooh we can copy it! How in the World could u invent it
@Aaron Silva I heard Dave tell that story. 🎵
Great tone and articulation. You really nailed this.
Thanks a lot Vince!
That is fucking insane, I can't believe you can play that EXACTLY like the recording. You play like a boss, thanks for sharing this.
This is EXACTLY the portion of the solo that needed explaining. Thank you!
Seen this played by well over 100 pros and god knows how many intermediate players .one of the most famous riffs in rock history and this video is one of the best I’ve seen .take a bow your playing is awesome 👏
One of the best covers of the solo ❤️✊🏼🤟🏼👏🏻🔥
Look up David Escobar's version. Trust me it's infinitely better, you'll see. Actual attention to detail.
Excellent job breaking down that lick... indeed, the hardest part of that epic solo.
All I can say is WOW! The tone, the feel, the dynamics, the musicality. Great job
Excellent lesson. You covered the dynamics as well as the intricate details and including thumb and hand position.
You're an excellent teacher. Thanks!
The tone on this guitar is phenomenal, that tremolo section is on point with Eddie's.
Thanks a lot! I work hard. I've refined this solo further and further since I shot this vid.
Rest In Peace Mr Eddie van Halen. Damn , hard to take in he passed away .
He ain't DEAD! God needed Geetar lessons 😜🤪
One of my favorite guitar solos ever
Nice too see someone so young tackle these licks effortlessly awesome Cameron

I really enjoy people who like EVH , specially you.
The cleanest cover I've ever heard

Casually cranks out one of the best Beat It solo covers i’ve ever seen and then teaches, actually crazy
Love the tone Cameron. That is the part of the solo that always intrigued me. Thanks for the lesson.
Best tutorial for beat it. The last licks are mind-blowing.
AWESOME man. Some serious talent right there.
Some fancy playing there! Tone is incredible👍
My phone thought this was the actual song
That's amazing

Excellent! I appreciate your using note names, not just fret, and, string locations! Legit fretboard knowledge: a lost art.

I can't believe he's gone so soon. What a monster. RIP Eddie. Great job on this video, man.
Notes and Tones...spot on
0:16 the pinch harmonic. There’s is no sound more satisfying
Definitely the best 'Beat It' solo I've ever seen... 👌

INSANE guitar tone.
What a masterpiece of a solo
What a tone!!! It sounds like you’re playing outside with 1000 speakers cabinets!!
Holy crap! Incredible!
Outstanding!
This is the reason I picked up a guitar in the 80's 👍🤘
This solo guitar is just fire🔥love it!
Love your mastery of the EVH as well as your own style. Great work keep it up! An inspired fan from the California beach
Great warm up lick for the left hand when done SLOWLY ...
Heard this solo was Ed’s second take.., then he left.
Yeah second take of 2!
what a goddamn legend
same as Eruption....2 takes and they chose the best one
Yep, and i saw an interview Ed did and said he also had to rearrange the entire song a bit so this solo fit better. MJ heard it and loved it!!
Amazing technic! Amazing sound! Great Job dude ;)
Beautiful Guitar
That tone is spot on, well done! IMHO this EVH solo is still the most original guitar solo on any pop tune, hands down.
So much for making this, man! It’s a huge help! 🙏🎸
Holy shit. This is the best cover ive ever seen of beat it.

Absolutely beautiful my friend!!!
You know how many videos I've seen try to do the perfect wammy thing at 0:13
You're version, even though a little slow, Its absolutely perfect.
The tone in enviously spot on. Amazing video man
I use a Yamaha THR30II for all tones. If you got one, there's no need to envy 🤘🏻
Can you use a boss katana mk2 or evh overdrive 5150 to get same tones
I'm sure you could get pretty get there with either but 90% of the sound comes from learning the licks, tricks and songs to the best of your ability.
Very nice... Alright totally enjoyed that, I haven't picked up my guitar in years, but it's very Kool to watch you guys rip it up.. thank you, ..
Great! You're really a great player! Thanks for the demo!
Incredible , sir !! Always a joy to watch you play !!
Well you got that one down well enough to teach it back to Ed.
One of the all-time great guitar solos!
Absolutely perfect, best solo cover I've ever seen
Holy shit you even nailed the slighlty muted tapping riff at the very end, dude thats fucking next level fuckkk
My God that tone is absolutely incredible, in fact it's beautiful? 🤘🖤
Watching this makes me respect EVH even more! What a legend
Any beginners just starting out... this is a great solo to start with. Once you've this lick nailed you can move on with confidence . 👍
You nailed that tone as I remember when I heard it in '82.
The sound is so huge!! Wanna get one after seeing this.
That stretch is gnarly.
Fantastic execution, awesome, I can but dream!
You can do it Jake
I've attempted learning this solo a few times and this particular section would stop me in my tracks because of the stretch but as you pointed out lowering the thumb on the neck is key. That was my problem after lowering my thumb I was able to reach those notes. Thanks!
Great lesson. I’m actually learning this solo at the moment , many thanks 😊
Sustain for days! Love your playing
Awesome. RIP Eddie
that tone...WOW
That first and second stretch is a killer, that will take some time just to get that under your fingers, man that is a tough one. Great stretch lesson.

Dude how did you nail the tone do well? It’s spot on. Blew me away.
It’s probably an Axe Fx or a Kemper.
he said it was the yamaha THR v2
Wow that's perfect. I've always dreamed of playing this. May be with this video and another year of practice I'll be able to make some progress 🙏
Thanks for explali this solo..
Now it's all clear!!!!
those who disliked this doesn't know how to play guitar
One of the hippest guitar solos for the day !
Congratulations!
Also, you made the same sound of Eddie! Perfect!
Subscribed, the tone is perfect and the playing is flawless.
Thanks youtube for showing me your channel !
You are such an amazing player and Teacher. Love your Guitar Tone and Technique.
Gotta love that sustain!
Well played sir.
I was looking for a better lesson for this part of the solo. And this is far the best one.
