    They are not well know to tourist, but one of the saddest parts, I found, about Hiroshima were the shadows. There are places were you can see the shadow of where a person was when the bomb went off. Because their body shielded the ground from the intense heat and light it left a permanent outline of their body in the concrete.

    its kind of crazy to think of the nuclear technology used 70 years ago, think of how much technology has advanced in 70 years. Now think how much a nuclear bomb has advanced since then...scary :o

    • @RobinClaassen
      @RobinClaassen 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** That number is closer to what we saw in the Cold War era. The numbers of active nuclear weapons in the U.S. and Russia have been reduced greatly since then (reference: www.armscontrol.org/factsheets/Nuclearweaponswhohaswhat ).

    • @RobinClaassen
      @RobinClaassen 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I both believed that Iraq was developing weapons of mass destruction at the time of the American invasion, and that the people who decided to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki did so because they believed that it was necessary to do so in order to end the war. With the evidence we have available to us now, I now believe neither of those things, but I do feel that each of those beliefs was reasonable based upon the relevant information I had at the respective times that I believed them.
      You seem to be implying that you believe that the U.S. and/or Russia have greater numbers of active nuclear weapons than they officially claim or is commonly believed. If that is what you believe, why do you believe that, and what do you imagine that the motivations of those responsible might be? Setting aside the issue of the feasibility of maintaining such a large-scale conspiracy in a liberal democracy about information that's ostensibly openly disclosed to the public (which I'm guessing we have some differing views about), I have difficulty imagining any plausible motivation for doing so.
      It seems to me that in the world as it is today, the only motivation that any country with a representative government or with non-representative, but still reasonable leaders has to develop or maintain nuclear weapons is to use them as deterrents to other countries attacking it. No country today plans to use a nuclear weapon for offensive purposes, or expects any other county to be willing to call its bluff that its ready to use them for defensive or retaliatory purposes. So if the whole purpose of having nuclear weapons today is to show others that you have them so that you'll never need to use them, what could possibly be the purpose of maintaining a much larger nuclear arsenal than you publicly claim?
      Additionally, if either the U.S. or Russia were to do so, and it was discovered, it would dramatically harm their public image internationally, and the trust between the two countries that their mutual disarmament efforts are based upon.

    Thanks for touring around Hiroshima. I'm a grad student in Japan Studies at the University of Washington, currently writing a term paper on World War II, the American Occupation (1945-1952), and propaganda, so it was nice to see your tour. You mentioned that Japan is one of the most peaceful nations in the world (which is true). What you may not know (or maybe you do) is that the U.S. wrote Japan's constitution over a span of six days in 1946. We put in an anti-war clause (Article 9), disallowed them from having a military, etc. Its all pretty interesting. I've enjoyed your videos for a while now, so let me know if u ever wanna chat about it.

    I had a friend in my senior year of high school who was born in Hiroshima and when she was telling us about herself in my world issues class she talked about the memorial there and that building or what was left from it standing. It's scary to see the devastation that those bombs did to innocent people.
    Japan looks very nice, it looks fun to explore ^ w ^.

    Um, first atom bomb ever? Pretty sure the first one was detonated in the midwestern united states somewhere. Unless of course you mean the first of the only two ever used in a war against another country, then you would be right, but if that is the case then saying "first ever" is still kinda misleading.

    Props to you guys for making a point to visit the sites of the atomic bombings.
    I would, however, like to respond to this:
    8:49: "As North Americans, we're only connected as, like 'oh, the atomic bomb helped end the war, helped win the war.'"
    I think that it's worth pointing out that that widespread understanding in the West of why the atomic bombs were dropped appears to be a false myth. From what we know today, it appears that Truman intentionally prolonged the war in order to give time for the bombs to be finished so that by using them we could intimidate the Soviets. The Japanese appear to have been ready to surrender as early as May of 1945, conditional upon an American guarantee that they would be able to keep their emperor as a constitutional monarch (which we ended up allowing anyway).
    The Japanese knew for months that they had lost the war, and their two big priorities in managing their defeat were ensuring that they could keep their emperor, and ensuring that they would not be made subject to communist rule. From what I understand, after the massive Soviet assault on August 9th, 1945, they felt that had run out of time, and needed to surrender to the Americans while they still had the chance, even without the assurance they wanted. The atomic bombings were seized as a pretext for the surrender, but it was really the Soviet entry into the Pacific theater of the war that forced them to surrender when they did.

      +Nyanco Chan Yeah, the temperatures caused by the blast, while only for the briefest instant, are hotter than our sun. And those VERY INEFFICIENT bombs only split about 30% or something their fissile fuel, yet leave only the shadows of people as they are literally vaporized... Think about if the USSR had not cut the yeild of the tsar bomb to 50 mega tons instead of the initial 100 megatons (1 megaton is the equal of 1 million tons of TNT), and mass produced it... The first generation atomic bombs were only in the kilotons (thousand tons)....

    I'm going to say a few things about this topic.... I grew up Los Alamos, New Mexico, where the atomic bombs were created. Many people here regret it, and every year protestors come and march up and down downtown, on the day of Hiroshima. Still, it did win us the war, and Oppenhimer, and all those people hadn't done this, we would still possibly be under Nazi regime.Yes, this is absolutely awful and terrifying, and everyone in Los Alamos really truthfully wish that we never had to take to such extremes to win the war, for our tactics were absolutly awful,and still impact people to this day. But, please do tell of my town's story, because we did make this happen, but Los Alamos really is a peaceful, beautiful place. Yes, the Labratory that invented the bombs is still here, and even though I am also positive they are working on bombs (only a few weeks ago my freinds heard one going off) they are trying to find more peaceful solutions.

      Because with Hiroshima and Nagasaki, people really wanted to clean up stuff and got all the lethal radiation and contaminated things out of there soon enough to stop everything from just becoming un salvageable.... Chernobyl, erm.... Let's just say it like this: There was so much radiation coming from everywhere that hazmat suits wouldn't help you, and you were better off never ever being there again. And you still cannot directly face the melted out core without protection today IIRC. Radiation really does linger.

    The two only atomic bombs were dropped on innocent people...it’s very messed up. Burning hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians for honestly no reason, it’s not okay. Atomic bombs should not be allowed no matter what. There is this (extremely sad) speech by Setsuko Thurlow (a survivor of the Hiroshima bombing) when she accepted the 2017 Nobel peace prize for ICAN, I recommend people check it out.

    There are a lot of thoughts on this, yes it's it was a terrible choice for America, YET we gave Japan many warnings to surrender and they did not respond. So we did drop the bomb for a reason and gave out warnings, but it was still not the right decision.

      Well, mainly because it was such a long hike to get to there, but also because it's May and when it's Springtime/Summer in Japan it gets very humid

    Actually many historians debate if the atomic bomb was necessary to win the war. Most believe it wasn't.
