  • In 1980 HMAS YARRA (Commander Phil Knife), represented the Australian Government at the Independence Celebrations of the new nation Vanuatu. The day after Independence YARRA carried the new Prime Minister Father Walter Lini to his home island of Esprit de Santo where his people were waiting to celebrate both his success and the emergence of their new nation. The band of HMAS MELBOURNE was also carried by YARRA to participate in the celebrations.

Wow, as an 18yo ABFC on the Yarra I remember vividly the 21 gun salute that day. What a memory. Thanks for uploading this and the other clips of my old ship HMAS Yarra. Great memories.

Came across this clip, haven't seen some of the footage from before! Great historical video for our younger Ni-Vanautu generations to see and learn more about when our nation became Independent on 30th July 1980. Thanks for uploading. cheers.

Yes, and it all started in our lounge in luganville many years before 1980 :) I was very young, but my mother retained communication with Father Walter Lini after we left and returned to NZ. In fact he came to our church in NZ for a visit. Many don't know that Vanuatu is more than a holiday destination. (I started school there, on Santo)

This is very interesting to see because now adays some ni vanuatu have'nt seen how Vanuatu gets its inependence and how difficulties that our leaders come across during that year.
