Dark Sage was really good for its time looking at what it did compared to other cards. It still didn’t get played because of the coin toss and it got worse over time. It’s only positive is it’s search but not when you have to A). jump through hoops and B). possibly neg yourself really bad.
Top 10 cards that will be broken if they had an "IF" Instead of a "WHEN". One of the examples I have in mind now is Dupe Frog, but I guess that there would be better

I always wished Dark Sage's effect was when Time Wizard's effect failed. It makes it so much better as a card as well as representing how it was in the anime so much better.
Honestly, Dark Sage should be a fusion monster of Dark Magician and Time Wizard(similar to Thousand Dragon), but still have its spell card search effect.
@Nine_Tails137 Time Wizard shouldn't simply destroy monsters but age them (decreasing their stats, removing power-ups, maybe also negating their effects or making each monster's effects share a hard once per turn), with Thousand Dragon and Dark Sage being extra deck monsters that need to be brought out by aging your Baby Dragon or Dark Magician respectively, i. e. a kind of fusion monsters but more like the Masked HEROes.
Reminder that in Zexal - a series about *only* Xyz summoning - they had to have Sargasso be a passive field spell, with the Barians all having lighthouse in their opening hand just to make it semi threatening to their 4,000 life points. And even then they still lost
I'm surprised that Konami hasn't come out with a retrain of Dark Sage after all these years. Like make it a fusion monster with effects all about searching for spell cards.
@@duelistemissary7680 It's amusing to see how you're trying to apply the mechanics of the game to lore of the card when the lore of the card is is discussing the BANISHMENT of the darklords from heaven or in yugioh's case "The Sanctuary in The Sky" after The Darklord Rebelliion saw Darklord Morningstar exiled for rebelling against his dear old dad.
I think Sargasso Lighthouse was mostly a plot device in the anime to put an unfair field restriction for the protagonists and put a time limit on the duel. Since the starting LP was 4000 and duels tended to last past the 3rd turn back then, 500 dmg per turn & per summon (especially during an Xyz focused era) was a lot more significant
Fun fact about Shock Troops of the Ice Barrier: the card did actually see a small amount of play as a side deck card in topping competitive decks when Nekroz was tier 0, because you could use the effect to get rid of a Nekroz monster summoned by Djinn, Releaser of Rituals, thus breaking the Djinn-lock, and at the same time search out another copy of Shock Troops to do it again next turn if necessary.

It's so bizarre to me that fish, sea serpent, and aqua are 3 different types instead of just one together. So weird, especially with the absolute barren support

I was actually pretty pissed that Sargasso was such a turd archetype. The artwork looks cool and the thing it's based on, the Sargasso sea, is really cool. Would have loved to make a deck out of this, but even if you set it up perfectly, it's not worth it.

Here's a top 10 suggestion based on this video: Cards that would be better as Trap Cards I've heard a lot of cards that were talked about and said that "They could be better if they were Spells/Quick-Play cards". I've never heard of the opposite ever mentioned.
Part of that is cause waiting a turn to activate a card just kind of sucks. Outside of actual traps I myself couldn't think of something that would benefit being a trap card. But I will say it's an interesting concept
I remember when Shock Troops of the Ice Barrier was play as a side deck option against Nekroz. It would kill their Nekroz of Clausolas with Djinn Releaser of Rituals and give you a new Ice Barrier monster you could use to go into the Shaddoll water fusion, which really makes ritual summons hard for your opponents and is a huge swing.

Mid Xyz era, i used the sargasso combo, dark snake syndrome, and nightmare wheel in my hazy flame deck to cheese my friends out of so many wins, truly fond memories
You know berfomet could have been a really cool card if it can proc it effect by special summoning, that way when Chimera die you can special berformet then search gazelle to fusion summon chimera again
Guide to draw any card from the deck: 1- Have someone dear to you kidnapped; 2- Make sure everybody knows winning that duel will help bring that person back; 3- When everything else fails: trust in the Heart of the Cards.
Shock Troops should be way way lower. It's the only one on the list who saw (very brief) meta play during tier 0 nekroz format as a pop that could search itself for the next turn on decks that did not need its normal summon.
4:14. I realize a new confusing card mechanic: Shuffling deck. If a search card does not ask you to "shuffle," do you still shuffle your deck? Some cards clearly specific you gotta shuffle your deck after searching cards from your deck, while some don't.
it is in the rules to always shuffle your deck when searching, old cards still have the "shuffle" text on them because it wasn't in the rules at the time.
My favorite is #50, since 50 seems like a number that would house a very powerful and plot relevant monster, since it's the number directly inbetween 1 and 100, but what 50 really houses is a literal corn
Symbol of Friendship is a universal searcher and is somehow one of the worst searchers in the game. I understand this is in reference to Episode 1 of Duel Monsters, where Yugi used the metaphorical power of friendship to draw the final piece of Exodia when Kaiba had 3 Blue Eyes and wiped Yugi's board. That being said, real life is not an anime and the average duelist is not an anime protagonist, so this card is more of a meme/nostalgia card than anything.
There's a way to call out dark sage. Download the emulator on your phone, download the yugioh 2008 ds game, activate time wizard but before you select a coin side, save state your game. If you call it wrong load you saved state and call it right. Boom dark sage. Worked every time I used it
Love how the dark sage makes number 1 again haha didn't even know it was a searcher. If you want to add any spell card this one flip magician card is much easier and even that is slow, shows how complicated this card is. I am a newbie in yugioh tho so I could be wrong tho.
Top 5 tier 0 anti-meta decks for their respective generation. For example, the anti-meta for Chaos Yata Lock, anti-meta for TeleDAD, anti-meta for PePe, anti-meta for Zoodiac, anti-meta for Full Power Spyrals. If it is too hard, top 10 most used floodgates in the yu-gi-oh history.
The fun thing about Sargasso Lighthouse is that in the Zexal anime, the card never had a search effect. It was only used while in a dimension that was treated as always having the field spell active
Volcanic Blaster needs to be on this list. Only works when destroyed by battle, and only places the selected card on top of your deck....doesn't even add to your hand.

Wasn't Shock Troops of the Ice Barrier used in Shaddolls during Nekroz format to out the Djinn-Lock? It being a Water helped summon Anoyatyllis as well.
I mean, Sargasso is only ok if your opponent XYZ summons monsters a lot and can't negate its effect from dealing them damage. But it has no protection so it wouldn't be a challenge to get over. I really hate how the anime over-exaggerates certain cards that seem like it's such an unbeatable card but in reality it's a piece of shit.
i used to use toon table of contents in a fun heart of the underdog/skill drain water deck. With ALO, giga gagagigo, terrorking salmon, gagagigo, 7 colored fish etc lots of strong water beatsticks. Toon table would let me deck thin my spells out, and the best part was could even use Toon Aligator in an actual deck, thus allowing toon table of contents to actually deck thin 3 cards instead of 2. And toon alligator worked with heart of the underdog too so great synergy. Could use terraforming to deck thin further and get ALO out easily, thus with some draw spells you were much more likely to be able to abuse heart of the underdog after you deck thinned your spells a lot.
4:30 let's not forget getting toon blue-eyes for trade-in or toon dm/Red-eyes for allure of darkness. Thanks for differentiating card of the soul in duel links btw. 8:18 numeron?
Symbol of friendship would be usefull if you drew it going second in your first draw after your opponent makes a big board, wich is really consistent if you ask me
If you have 3 copies in your deck and none in your hand, you have about a 12% chance of drawing it. But you also have like a 30% of starting with one of those bricks in your hand
The worst part about shock troops is that ice barriers have a spell card that lets them search any ice barrier on activation so it's a bad searcher in an architype with one of the best kinds of searching effects in the game
Top 10 cards that will never be used because ANOTHER card is banned. (e.g. Guardian Elma because Butterfly Dagger - Elma is banned; or Gem Knight Seraphinite because Brilliant Fusion is banned)
Right, there was kind of two different groups I had in mind: some could be cards that are literally unplayable because another card is banned; others would be cards that were pretty much only good because of another banned card and never see play any more because said card got banned.
Y'know what we need, a retrain of work prince that when normal summoned it summons 2 worm tokens along with it... y'know, like some background dancers when he drops those sick beats
I can't think of any other YGO examples besides Berfomet for what its arms are like, but if you look up "Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger" from MtG you you'll see a version of what I _think_ Berfomet's arms are doing without them being covered in shadow.
In duel links card of the soul made Thunder Dragons more consistent by being able to search thunder dragonhawk. The deck was already broken enough though, so it didn’t see that much play outside of F2P builds.

That would have been too strong for back when it was printed, now a retrain that takes time wizard and DM as fusion mats and then searches a spell card now that would be something. It would prob need another condition at that point since generic spell search is an amazing effect
I run Leviair the Sea Dragon in my deck but I don't actually use it terribly often... it's usually just easier to run two of whatever I would want to recover and search it out some other way rather than wasting an XYZ summon on an otherwise not very strong monster

So this entire effect would have been perfectly acceptable if the card was Level 4, but not only does this 2000 ATK Level 5 specifically have to be Tribute Summoned to make a Token (which is not optional by the way, this is your life now!) but the card was made during the Synchro era so if you didn't destroy the Token during the turn you Summoned it, you gave your opponent a free level for a Synchro. I would also say you gave him a free Link Material but I'm gonna be level-headed and assume nobody has attempted to Summon this in the last five years. The single solitary upside of this card is that in case your opponent has a monster you can't run over, you can Summon Royal Knight and ram into the Coffin for 1000 damage but ironically you just put yourself into a coffin because you wasted resources on summoning ROYAL KNIGHT OF THE FUCKING ICE BAR-
When it comes to something like Berthomet the card was created when tribute summoning wasn’t a thing in the anime yet so to viewers it was a monster that can pull another to you’re hand. Giving two thirds of the combo needed for the fusion. By the time it came out in the real world and the tribute summon was a thing, it was a bit to late. Honestly make it level 4 and it be a decent card. Especially now a days with all the new fusion cards
1:50 Lol I pulled this card a few times from legacy packs in master duel. I use it to search Alba Zoa in Dogmatika ritual. Is it good? Not really no but I use it cause its funny and if the numbers ever align I could potentially search something else in my deck Also, In master duel, The effect to look at your deck actually allows you to see all the cards still in your deck on use which is kinda cool
For card of soul it's perfect for the 4 vanilla Expedia pieces. Only if you have 7200 plus use wall of revealing light to sacrifice all your life but 200. Then you can add 1 piece per turn
Sartorius Kumar and Bandit Keith both have skills in Duel Links that guarantee heads on a coin toss, but they don't make summoning Dark Sage that much easier. In Sartorius's case, your deck must have five or more cards with different names that require coin tosses. The Arcana Force archetype has a ton of these type of cards, but it doesn't sync well with Dark Sage, Dark Magician, or Time Wizard. You could probably run a DM deck with Bandit Keith - why?! - but in order to use Cheater's Coin, you need to have 1000+ LP more than your opponent and five or more cards in your hand, in which, you already have the upper hand.
Funny thing about Shock Troops, it actually did see very niche play during certain formats, when there were a lot of WATER boss monsters running around. You could use Shock Troops to get rid of it and add another copy of itself to use later if needed, or just for discard fodder. It's still a shit searcher for the archetype, especially since they literally have their own E-Call.

the trick to making it work is giving your opponent a zoodiac deck for free irl so they'll use it and you can burn them to death turn 2

Shock Troops should be way way lower. It's the only one on the list who saw (very brief) meta play during tier 0 nekroz format as a pop that could search itself for the next turn on decks that did not need its normal summon.
4:14. I realize a new confusing card mechanic: Shuffling deck. If a search card does not ask you to "shuffle," do you still shuffle your deck? Some cards clearly specific you gotta shuffle your deck after searching cards from your deck, while some don't.
it is in the rules to always shuffle your deck when searching, old cards still have the "shuffle" text on them because it wasn't in the rules at the time.

Symbol of Friendship is a universal searcher and is somehow one of the worst searchers in the game.
I understand this is in reference to Episode 1 of Duel Monsters, where Yugi used the metaphorical power of friendship to draw the final piece of Exodia when Kaiba had 3 Blue Eyes and wiped Yugi's board. That being said, real life is not an anime and the average duelist is not an anime protagonist, so this card is more of a meme/nostalgia card than anything.

Dark Sage is definitely one of those cards that would be ultrapowerful if you could cheat it out while bypassing it's summoning restrictions entirely.

There's a way to call out dark sage. Download the emulator on your phone, download the yugioh 2008 ds game, activate time wizard but before you select a coin side, save state your game. If you call it wrong load you saved state and call it right. Boom dark sage. Worked every time I used it

The fun thing about Sargasso Lighthouse is that in the Zexal anime, the card never had a search effect. It was only used while in a dimension that was treated as always having the field spell active

I mean, Sargasso is only ok if your opponent XYZ summons monsters a lot and can't negate its effect from dealing them damage. But it has no protection so it wouldn't be a challenge to get over. I really hate how the anime over-exaggerates certain cards that seem like it's such an unbeatable card but in reality it's a piece of shit.
i used to use toon table of contents in a fun heart of the underdog/skill drain water deck. With ALO, giga gagagigo, terrorking salmon, gagagigo, 7 colored fish etc lots of strong water beatsticks. Toon table would let me deck thin my spells out, and the best part was could even use Toon Aligator in an actual deck, thus allowing toon table of contents to actually deck thin 3 cards instead of 2. And toon alligator worked with heart of the underdog too so great synergy. Could use terraforming to deck thin further and get ALO out easily, thus with some draw spells you were much more likely to be able to abuse heart of the underdog after you deck thinned your spells a lot.
4:30 let's not forget getting toon blue-eyes for trade-in or toon dm/Red-eyes for allure of darkness.

If you have 3 copies in your deck and none in your hand, you have about a 12% chance of drawing it. But you also have like a 30% of starting with one of those bricks in your hand

The worst part about shock troops is that ice barriers have a spell card that lets them search any ice barrier on activation so it's a bad searcher in an architype with one of the best kinds of searching effects in the game

Right, there was kind of two different groups I had in mind: some could be cards that are literally unplayable because another card is banned; others would be cards that were pretty much only good because of another banned card and never see play any more because said card got banned.

Uhhhh... Where is that 3rd arm of Berfomet coming from? Is this another Zorc thing going on?
I can't think of any other YGO examples besides Berfomet for what its arms are like, but if you look up "Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger" from MtG you you'll see a version of what I _think_ Berfomet's arms are doing without them being covered in shadow.

In duel links card of the soul made Thunder Dragons more consistent by being able to search thunder dragonhawk. The deck was already broken enough though, so it didn’t see that much play outside of F2P builds.

Dark Sage should have been a Fusion monster like Thousand Dragon is.
That would have been too strong for back when it was printed, now a retrain that takes time wizard and DM as fusion mats and then searches a spell card now that would be something. It would prob need another condition at that point since generic spell search is an amazing effect

I run Leviair the Sea Dragon in my deck but I don't actually use it terribly often... it's usually just easier to run two of whatever I would want to recover and search it out some other way rather than wasting an XYZ summon on an otherwise not very strong monster

So this entire effect would have been perfectly acceptable if the card was Level 4, but not only does this 2000 ATK Level 5 specifically have to be Tribute Summoned to make a Token (which is not optional by the way, this is your life now!) but the card was made during the Synchro era so if you didn't destroy the Token during the turn you Summoned it, you gave your opponent a free level for a Synchro. I would also say you gave him a free Link Material but I'm gonna be level-headed and assume nobody has attempted to Summon this in the last five years. The single solitary upside of this card is that in case your opponent has a monster you can't run over, you can Summon Royal Knight and ram into the Coffin for 1000 damage but ironically you just put yourself into a coffin because you wasted resources on summoning ROYAL KNIGHT OF THE FUCKING ICE BAR-
Dark Sage needs a Fusion or a Ritual Summon retrain (ala "Magician of Black Chaos MAX"). Dude is decades overdue for either, in my opinion...
When it comes to something like Berthomet the card was created when tribute summoning wasn’t a thing in the anime yet so to viewers it was a monster that can pull another to you’re hand. Giving two thirds of the combo needed for the fusion. By the time it came out in the real world and the tribute summon was a thing, it was a bit to late. Honestly make it level 4 and it be a decent card. Especially now a days with all the new fusion cards
1:50 Lol I pulled this card a few times from legacy packs in master duel. I use it to search Alba Zoa in Dogmatika ritual. Is it good? Not really no but I use it cause its funny and if the numbers ever align I could potentially search something else in my deck
Also, In master duel, The effect to look at your deck actually allows you to see all the cards still in your deck on use which is kinda cool
For card of soul it's perfect for the 4 vanilla Expedia pieces. Only if you have 7200 plus use wall of revealing light to sacrifice all your life but 200. Then you can add 1 piece per turn

Sartorius Kumar and Bandit Keith both have skills in Duel Links that guarantee heads on a coin toss, but they don't make summoning Dark Sage that much easier. In Sartorius's case, your deck must have five or more cards with different names that require coin tosses. The Arcana Force archetype has a ton of these type of cards, but it doesn't sync well with Dark Sage, Dark Magician, or Time Wizard.
You could probably run a DM deck with Bandit Keith - why?! - but in order to use Cheater's Coin, you need to have 1000+ LP more than your opponent and five or more cards in your hand, in which, you already have the upper hand.
Funny thing about Shock Troops, it actually did see very niche play during certain formats, when there were a lot of WATER boss monsters running around. You could use Shock Troops to get rid of it and add another copy of itself to use later if needed, or just for discard fodder. It's still a shit searcher for the archetype, especially since they literally have their own E-Call.
Top 10 Number cards. I really like the Number archetype and I'd really enjoy a video on it.
