When the head bobbing stops and you lean forward to stare, you know you're watching something magical, and you realize you'd been holding your breath the entire time.
Just 3 Guys in their late 50's showing today's youth how its done... 3 hours into their set.
And having fun doing it
Greatest 3 piece rock band in history, no debate, over.
Sorry to disagree but Rush is the greatest band. No debate.
Meant to say greatest band period. Doesn’t matter how many pieces are in other bands
@@charlesjohnson7744 I’m not to sure about greatest of all time
Don't you find yourself looking for the other musicians? Lol
Oh really . Is that what you think that rush is the greatest three prince band in rock history? Well let me tell you this.. you are so damn right about that. Never has been any better and there never will be any better.
This was at the end of a 3 hour show from guys well in their 50's at the time. Shredding it better than any band a third of their age. There's no band quite like Rush
Well into their 60s, my friend last song they played together.
Get your facts right ...they were in their late 50's here...time machine tour was 2011 their last tour was 2015 ...don't comment on something you know nothing about.@@Adam01Time
I feel sorry for those who never had the opportunity to hear and se them live. I was 12years old when i saw them live for the first time, my first concert ever, the Glasgow Apollo and they recorded Closer to the Heart for Exit Stage Left that night. It’s a memory that will live with me for ever.
Working Man is off their first album and it sounds different than this. Both are excellent. Cleveland has a special place in their hearts as it was a Disc jockey from there that played this song and yes especially back In the 70's it was a working class town. This lead them to getting their first recording contract. The guys are pushing 60 here and this was at the end of a three hour show. Phenomenal! 🔥
I read that Cleveland Rock Station, WMMS 100.7 is the station 1st to play Rush songs in the mid 70's.
🤗 Hey Debbie! 🥰
@@MrTech226 That's 100% correct, first station and the first song. In fact, people calling in after it aired wanted to know when the new Zep album was coming out, thinking it was Led Zeppelin.
The DJ's name is Donna Halper. She is Rush Royalty. She wound up teaching communications at Emerson College for awhile.
@@cityhonors1 Hey There! 👋🥰🤗
I shouldn't have beers and watch Rush reaction videos. Get so emotional every time LOL. First time seeing them was in 1984 at age 14. 22 times in total and I regret not seeing them more...Great reaction thanks!
Rush is 🇨🇦🔥
The best rock trio there ever was. And ever will be.
❤
Agreed. But I still like that, "Lil Ole Band from Texas" a wee bit too. Same type of longevity and irreplaceable individuals.
The look on her face at certain points is PURE disbelief. I LOVE that!!!! I saw the live 14 times and they were INCREDIBLE. 🎶❤️🥁🎸🎤❤️🎶
For being a classic prog-rock band, that solo section was about the most metal thing I've ever seen. Absolutely glorious.
none of us ever thought of them as "prog"
@@yellowcat1310 ya, Rush nuveau-normies out themselves with that stuff.
I was at that show (one of my 20). Floor on Geddy's side. Love that I can watch this and relive it. Rush was the greatest.
Can you believe they are over 50 at this time! They loved Cleveland because the FM station there in the 70’s played this song and they took off! Genius Canadian trio
The kicker in all of this is Alex Lifeson, the guy who played that amazing guitar solo, is the most underrated member of the group. That's how amazing Rush was.
and technically, it's his band as senior member
Very exciting to watch you guys become Rush fans, quality rock and roll through and through! They are the power trio GOAT
No need to limit it to power trio, they are the greatest period, LoL 🤣
I was at this show. It was as awesome and loud and intense as it sounds!
48 year lifelong favorite band RUSH fanatic. My girlfriend gave me their self-titled debut immediately after it was released in the US in June 1974. I was 13. I still have it. Already heavy into all the music that would later be called "Classic Rock." the instant that stylus contacted vinyl I was hooked for life. Saw them in January of 1977 on their ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE tour and February 1980 on their PERMANENT WAVES tour. The 77 show I was front row center with arms on stage. In the 70's their were no space barricades between fans & stage. The crowd was pressed against the stage. All arena shows were general admission until The Who in Cincinnati horror in December of 79. You arrive HOURS early and run for your life to attain the only spot to watch a show; FRONT ROW CENTER ARMS ON STAGE. It was a GLORIOUS decade to be a teenager.
This may be one of the most iconic performances in rock history, played by perhaps the best three man power band to ever grace a stage. Off the bloody charts!
RUSH The greatest rock band that ever was or ever will be.
Xanadu from Live Exit Stage Left is my favorite performance of any band ever. I can listen to it over and over and never get tired. It's a journey. Like most of their songs
Yep
Look up the remastered videos a channel called Stick Hits is putting up, they are amazing and Xanadu has never sounded better than in 1981.
Great performance, as always. Alex and Geddy are life long friends and really feed off and push each other.
Ahhhh our three Canadian Masters!!!!
We worship them here at home.
My boys!!!!
Omg they had so much fun on stage.... 3 hour concerts..... lord luvs ducks 1981 was having my first baby!!! Just 45 yrs of awesome music.
Luv seeing new listeners.. getting to experience this amazing music, the classic bands.
Cheers
Brings tears of joy and sadness for me to watch these video reactions. Sadness because we will never see these three virtuosos ever play live again with Neil’s death. The joy of having been alive at the same time this all happened and seeing younger generations discovering what I got to witness for 40+ years as a Rush fan. RIP Neil
It makes me happy to see someone get giddy about a band that I have loved so much for so long!
Best live version ever!!!
Thank you thank you thank you RUSH!
You two are the best people and so deserving to hear and comment on this Amazing band! Your out take is spot on! I really appreciate your inspiring reaction it's the same inspiring performance Rush puts out and you receive! Thank you so much for being so accurate it goes with great minds as you two possess!
At the end of Working Man they snuck in Cygnus X1 for a teaser!
The original recording of this song was with the original Drummer John Rutsey who due to being insulin dependent diabetic had to leave the band. Enter the GOAT!
That was the last song of a 3-hour concert! OMG...they gave it up every night and they gave the love and passion right back to the fans!
Best live band of all time. So happy I got to see them 10 times all with my Dad who got my into the band.
And they do that for 3 hours straight. Love seeing the amazed faces. 40 years after finding them, I still make that face.
Love when they go reggae-hybrid. Such a different feel to it than the original.
How cool that they changed the feel of the song and made it really Jazzy in the beginning!! Such a Rush thing to do for their fans, which is why they're so loved!
Rush was one of the best bands live saw them over 30 times
I saw Rush on their Presto tour back in the '90's. The best rock concert I've ever seen.
I saw Rush back up Nazareth back in 1977. My first big concert. Imagine. 45 years ago. One of the best songs ever.
Couldn't tell mom I wanted to see Kiss 😒 I just mention the nice Canadian boys who's 45's I play all the time I buy with my Xmas $. 🤩 Got to see Rush open for KISS when Geddy was rocking 👘 kimonos on stage! 🤦🏿♀️ I feel REAL old now.... 🤣🐰
JEALOUS
Cleveland pretty much gave them their start. A DJ named Donna Halper played this for her call to nature break since it was a long song. Pretty soon people were calling the station asking the name of the new Led Zeppelin song🤣
These guys never forget the people who helped them along the way. They're still friends with the DJ and know if it wasn't for Cleveland. Who knows where they'd be?
Take care ✌
When Rush was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, the band made sure Donna was invited to the ceremony, flew her out to L.A. and put her in the same hotel their families were staying in. Pretty cool way to thank her!
@@timothypirk9083
Awesome. I didn't know that, but not surprising. Definitely a class act.
Also they immediately became Jimmy pages favorite new band.
🙂
Donna's awesome. She appears frequently on the RushFans YT channel and she's got smart and interesting insights about nearly every song they've ever recorded.
You guys absolutely nailed it with your observation about their affinity and relatability to the working-class Ohio radio was the first United States region to play the first Rush album album back in 1974. And Rush of always acknowledged that that was their Gateway into the career they had that expanded around the world eventually. They are definitely guys who work their way up playing shity clubs for years and years and perfecting their craft. Alex and Getty the guitarist and bassist vocalist respectively have been friends since they were in middle school so the joy you see between the two of them interacting is 1000% rooted in all that history plus this drummer, Neil Peart, had been with them since 1975. Unlike zillion rock band to get out there and fake it, pretending they actually can tolerate each other... to collect a paycheck while playing half-hearted versions of their radio hits at that. It's definitely not Rush's approach. So glad that you guys enjoyed it, this is my first time seeing your reaction Channel and I'm definitely enjoying your energy and enthusiasm. Subscribed.
Cleveland's working-class Rock Station, WMMS 100.7 is the station whose DJ 1st played Rush songs.
3 over talented guys in their late 50's absolutely smashing it
Some next level stuff for a group of near 60yo men that been doing it like that for nearly 40 years(at the time of this recording.) None have done what they have, and props to those that have made a attempt and come close, but ALL FALL SHORT of the glory of Rush!🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎹🎤🥇🇨🇦👌👍
Rush = 3 hard working artists always giving 110%
Watching the boys “ go to work”.
The very first Rush song to be played on the radio
Rush always had a tight relationship with the industrial cities along the Great Lakes. I grew up in one of those, and long before blue jeans and flannel shirts were the de rigueur attire for grunge acolytes, that was our uniform. And Rush provided the soundtrack of our lives. When Lee says to Cleveland that they're the "best audience ever", that's because outside of Toronto, it was in Cleveland that they had some of their strongest support. For over 40 years.
Another ting hat needs to be understood about Rush is that the members of the band were truly friends, and for them it was as much a pleasure to play for each other as it was to play for an audience. So, the joy you see in their faces is genuine.
Feel the power.
Embrace the awesomeness that IS RUSH.
Been a fan for over 40 years & oh yeah I was there for that show in Cleveland.
RUSH RULES……..ALWAYS HAS, ALWAYS WILL!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
I saw that tour but Long Island, NY
Thanks eh!🇨🇦
RUSH is the real deal, best ever.
This is one of the greatest live jams ever 🔥👍🤘🏻🎧
Working Man and Fly By Night are my fave early Rush tracks
Seen them 13 times and they always gave it all!!!
Love the reggae intro! RIP Neil Peart. He hadn't joined the band when this song was written and released.
I saw them in Louisville. Kentucky the night before this show. Fucking amazing. The best concert I've been to, and I've seen iron maiden.
I never get tired of seeing people's faces as Geddy releases the hounds at 3:45. They've just effortlessly smoked one of their signature trimultaneous interlocking solos and that almost frightened look of "we're going faster? how can we go faster?" just makes me laugh for the sheer joy of it every single time.
Wow. Hadn’t heard this version before. ❤ the reggae intro, and how they ended with a few measures from Cygnus X-1. Very fun!
The crowd going crazy like that can be explained with 4 letters....Ohio, and add to that Cleveland, they are one of the best crowds in the world, the recording is proof - only Rio could take it up a level from that!! The place where they got their break!!
Rush made a point to write music they would never get bored playing. This performance is them just having massive amounts of fun with the city that put them on the radio; old guys showing the new guys they can still rock, and I mean ROCK!
Three of the greatest musicians ever.
Great video guy.
It is awesome to watch when some see this performance for the first time.
Also you nailed it about Rush. They ARE the working man/women's band!
It was a Cleveland DJ that gave them a break playing their song on the radio , in the 70s , and yes this took to the working class all over the industrial USA and Canada
We have to thanks to DJ who worked at Cleveland's Rock Station, WMMS 100.7
Donna Halper (from MA) was the Cleveland DJ. Now a Boston area college professor.
This version is incredible. I would have suggested to listen to the original first, which is also incredible, then watch this one. Love this version and the original so much. Both have their strengths versus the other version. Both are of course awesome.
I haven’t even watched this yet because I’m SO EXCITED that you’re doing Working Man. …and I need to light my smoke. ❤
🤣 Exactly! 😁🐰
🤣🤣
RIP Neil Pert, the drummer in this world!!!
Thank you for doing this video! You loved it as much as we do!!!! 😁
What boggles my mind about this performance is three guys in their mid-50s rocking out with this much energy in the encore after a 2-3 hour show.
The Argentine performance of YYZ where the fans were singing, the fans had written actual lyrics they were singing, and organized it, which really touched the band.
It wasn't just LA LA la, they had words to sing to the band.
It's YYZ. There were 45,000 at that show. 65,000 the previous show at Sao Paulo
Just finished watching the most amazing interview just released on TH-cam today where Alex & Geddy talk about life after Rush their frustration with not being able to continue, the time when Neil was sick, handling the grieving and how life has moved on since. They are still great friends even though they haven't played any music together since the R40 tour. Enjoyed Alex's new project Envy of None, it is NOT Rush but it is enjoyable.
Don Hadfield - Thank you for mentioning the interview. I did not know about it and so went looking for it. It was a really great interview (more of a 'conversion with' really) and I enjoyed it very much.
It's a very good interview. I watched it a couple of of days ago. When it was released
I’m sure it’s been said already in the comments a # of times that this was their encore after a 3hr set!!! And they were in their late 50’s!!!
These three dudes are insane musicians an take it next level
Looking forward to more Rush reactions. So much great music by this band to check out. Fantastic live performances as well.
I was at this show on the floor center to Neil Peart. Awsome show!!!
Their entire shows had that much energy! They were 3 guys doin' what they love and lovin' what they do!
A little more perspective on the song: it’s written about Alex’s dad. Alex’s parents were emigres to Canada from Yugoslavia at the end of WWII. Alex’s real last name isn’t Lifeson - that’s a stage name adapted from his real name of Zivojinovich (which I think means roughly “Son of Life”). Alex’s dad was a plumber and handyman that worked 2 and 3 jobs all the time. When they say “get up at 7 and go to work at 9” they could have been thinking about how Alex’s dad might come home at 5, grab a nap til 7pm and then go to a second job at 9pm. That’s the kind of things he did for his family.
Even more amazing is how they supported Alex in his musical pursuits because they saw he was a youth prodigy on the guitar. But that’s another story. ✌🏼
his mom was working 2 jobs, geddy's dad died when he was 12 and his mom worked long hours keeping the family store going. alex at 1 point was working all day at his dad's store and nights gigs with about 2 0r 3 hours sleep. they all have a strong work ethic
I love the tone of that white Gibson Its the sound of there early years
Rush first debuted in the US on Cleveland radio station WMMS thanks to an astute young music director from Massachusetts, Donna Halper, and me being a resident was the beneficiary of that serendipity. The song was working man off of their titular album Rush
Astute insofar as by her own admission, she grabbed it because it was on the top of the pile of new releases and put Working Man on because it was the longest track and she had to pee! Astute insofar when the phones lit up with requests, she saw the obvious. Excellent person, remains friends with the guys.
These guys are top tier. Amazing talents, all three of them. R.I.P. Neal..
These songs kept me going during the darkest periods of my life. I cannot thank them enough. All 3 are just insanely talented. The idea that I will not see them or hear new music from them is a blow to me every time I let myself think those words. I miss them.
So disappointed I didn't see them live! What an amazing band!
The best live band EVER!
Love u guys, thanks to bring me happiness 🤘
It’s actually YYZ, the airport code for Toronto, Canada
First song from their first album which turned me on to them back in 1975! Great version. Saw them a couple of times in 1977 with 2112 and 1978 with Farewell to Kings. They double billed with Blue Oyster Cult!
I couldn't do them opening for BOC but 🤗 tricked mom in to letting me go see them when Rush opened for KISS! 😒 Cause I didn't mention Kiss! 🤣🐰
As a rush fan we are dedicated to this band its like a narriage
I wish you two could have seen them live. You have no idea...fornthise ofnus that did....it was a blessing and a privilege
Great video, thanks for your work.
you cant have 3 solo's of 3 different instruments at the same time DURING a song and bring it all back together to finish it out....RUSH- hahah yeah ok, watch this! . Alex playing above the fret line, Geddy doing the Flamenco strumming on bass and Neil ..well being Neil. And Neil didn't write this song. He came into the group right after this album. 40 yrs later was amazing. Great job guys. this song is so great life. glad I got to see them. keep up the good work and keep doing down the RUSH rabbit hole. you wont be disappointed.
All 3 are virtuosos on their instruments greatest band of all time lyrically and musically try red barchette Tom Sawyer, yyz driven, half the world, big money mission, marathon Animate half the world, lock and key, hold your fire, Any Rush is good Rush lol I cold go on and on and on and on for more songs
As Ged is finishing his little bass run right before Alex’s solo you can hear the crowd volume pickup slightly in anticipation of what’s coming! They know! Man I miss these guys !!! A Rush concert was something completely different! Saw every tour since permanent waves some tours multiple times. So fortunate!
I think you might mean YYZ? Regardless, love seeing the Rush reactions!
lol!!!!! the look on that womans face is frigging priceless!!!!
Rewatched YYZ and Working Man Live knocks your socks off as well. 🤗 Big difference between 🥁 The Professor and the record. 😉 No disrespect but 🤯 Wow! Neil's drum fills are so freaking epic 🤔 on every Rush song actually! 😊🐰
Love you love for rush they are top top artists unbeleable youve got to check 2112 the cominc version it will blow you away its up there with floyds shine on you crazy diamond
Great reaction. I highly recommend that you react to Rush, Xanadu from the Exit Stage Left video. It was Rush at its finest in the early 80's. Thanks!
Watch this live DVD with family and drinks every Christmas. Classic show 😎🤘🏻
Saw them in Rochester my first concert. Then in Syracuse. Their first live album I use to listen all the time. One of the best albums ever.
A Cleveland DJ gave Rush their first air play in the United States when she needed a sufficiently long song for a bathroom break. So she saw this new thing, it was long, she put it on. When she got back she said her phones were absolutely lighting up demanding to know when the new Zepelin was coming out. That's how Rush got big. So they have a VERY soft spot for Cleveland. And yeah, that is very much a working class town.
As for the song they love to just let Alex go a little nuts in the middle of it because it lends itself well to improvisation. This time, they pulled out all the stops and basically gave us 3 solos at the same time because all three of them were going insane and shredding their instruments. Keep in mind these guys are in their 50s at this point, and this is after already playing for 3 solid hours. RUSH is very much a working class band. They used to tour something like 280 days out of the year, year after year. These guys absolutely do this because they love doing it. They love their music. They love the fans. They love playing. And the fans love them all the more for it, so you get this insane energy feedback loop between them on stage and the crowd. There are people who essentially toured with the band and have been to hundreds of shows over their 4 decades of touring. Rush is also really pure. Never a scandal. No sex, drugs, etc. Just three guys who are best friends who are absolute gods at their instruments. They are incredibly humble. None of them have any ego about it. I've seen many concerts in my days from many genres of music. But nothing has even come close to comparing to seeing Rush live. It just feels so different.
While the band had a hard working ethic when on tour, it should be noted that they did partake in some drug use. Exhibit A: "Train to Bangkok."
@@kivimik Oh, absolutely. In later years as Alex's arthritis got worse he was frequently at the very least moderately high during the show. They aren't saints or anything, but they weren't out snorting cocaine or anything.
I was at this show....... 20th row Alex side on the floor.........amazing!
Again great reaction, love it!!
In the early days of Rush a DJ in Cleveland even though Working man was not getting a lot of Nationally and Rush ended up breaking big through Cleveland so They always treated Cleveland right
Great video great music song sounds rock. 👍 great show
they've been quoted as saying it was never about cash and flash but their music.
My jaw hit the ground several times. Unbleepin' believable.
Epic ….grew up with Rush 😀 Great version of this song !!!! Best drummer ever !!!! Tools drummer loves him 😊 check out Working Man rare early live and especially Rush in 4k Limelight live 😊!!!!!!
YYZ, call sign for Pearson Airport in Toronto their home town. 60 years old after a 3 hour concert.
This is what freaking mastery over your craft looks like while 20K people are watching you on full display.
