Such an underrated piece. And so so difficult, though it may not seem like it, not only musically but also technically. Great performance, very original. Would've loved to hear Rachmaninoff record this. I feel like this is the piece that most reflects his life. Especially after leaving Russia forever.
Var. XV is very beautiful by itself but it hits very different after all these variations before it. Despite it probably being the only happy-ish variation, it is the one that makes me feel the most sad when l listen to this piece
You can hear echoes of many of the Preludes and Études. Thanks for all your work, @TheExarion!
Liszt's second rhapsody)
P.S.
I'm taking about the theme.
One of the underrated piece of beloved Rachmaninoff. Coda is heavenly beautiful.

Wow, never knew Lugansky recorded this! A pleasant surprise to be sure
Beatiful piece!
Var. XIII is my favorite! It's so convulsive and manic! My only issue with it is it's too short, in my opinion 😩😩

Also the last three variations slap so hard
La Folia.
The theme almost sounds exactly like Handels theme and variations from his keyboard suite in d minor. I can’t remember which one.
The theme is called La Follia and was used by many composers including Handel!
@@ulysse__ ahhh thank you, very insightful
The Berman version is also very good
theme sounds like liszt spanish rhapsody
It's the same
both come from the la folia theme
