New to the climber world and put it to use this hunting season. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxlQ7TDIrnnSXXbRgFFaxqwullRJJIuYAs I felt safe while climbing up and down a tree. It did take some time getting used to climbing and descending the tree. Once I figured it out I was comfortable going in climbing a tree knowing I was going to be up a tree quickly and most importantly quite not scaring every deer out of my area. I am 6’2” and 240 lbs, fit and comfort were great. I bow hunt and found no issues hunting from it. It is a little bulky to carry in and out of the woods vs some of the smaller open front climbers but I thought it was worth the bulk/weight due to ease of climbing (using the rail to sit on) and comfort for long sits.
I have used climbers for a lot of years and never thought of doing this. I think if you have them connected together with a rope I don't thinks its as dangerous and people are crying about. And you probably could do a few more things to even make it more safe. Thanks for the video.
I have done this with my new style Summit . I took a dowel rod a little bigger and tapper one end and I push it into the looped latch hole so I can pull my cable out I do every thing else like you do . I like that style latch I think I`m` going to make mine to use that style thanks for the tips . And I do keep a rope tied to both incase it falls away .
lol. i been doing this for many years with not a single issue. i found it very easy and second nature ever since i bought my Summit Bullet Backpacker only i bury both the seat and platform teeth really hard into the tree prior to this maneuver but i would never even consider posting a video of it. my rig came with a nice nylon rope connecting both sections. that is a must.
I enjoyed seeing you get in and out of the stand when it was too high or canted too steep. l will have to see if that is as easy as it looked! Thanks for the video!
Much-needed video I couldn't tell you how many times I couldn't find nothing but cypress trees there are two wide around the base and then once you get in the tree that trick on adjusting the angle cuz that is very dangerous also make sure you have a cord attached from the seat to the foot platform cuz if I wouldn't have had that I would have been big time screwed
i have a strap that connects my top and bottom with a quick connect buckle in the middle and i can use it to help when packing the stand for carrying, and i have had mine fall but the strap saved it from going too far
I've found you just need to practice as much as you can with maneuvering your stand during the off season. You could attach a rope from the top to the bottom so you don't lose the bottom. The new Summits have a shoulder straps that attach for carrying and tethering to one another. Thanks for sharing I learned a couple of new things from you. Thanks!
I do the same type of maneuver in my summit only instead of sitting in the seat, I kneel down in the seat facing the tree, then take tension off the cable lifting up the front of the platform with my toes. Its just as easy to adjust the cable then as your method. Give it a try, I tried yours but I like facing the tree better. Thanks for the video!
Great video! Very helpful! On your model where the gate opens at cable connection u might think about drilling a small hole to put a pin in it to prevent gate from opening. My buddy had to do this on his as well. Just an idea trying to keep people safe. God bless you
nice tips! once I lost my foot board, all the way to the ground. I had to shimmy down the tree, which getting out of the seat was um entertaining. The safety harness helped with that. Then I had to find a long branch to drop the seat and that comes fast. Only took an hour and probably every critter in the woods nearly died laughing. Since then my two pieces are always tied together before I even try to climb. At +75 I doubt I could get in the stand that way, but gonna practice it.
Trying to adjust the bottom something like that is how I had the bottom drop away from me once. Thank god I had used the rope provided to tie the lower to the upper or I would have been in a fix. I'll never attempt that again!
What about the use of a 4 ft length of rope attached to both top and bottom of the climber stand. That would eliminate the chance of losing the bottom section while adjusting the canter?
I got a stand that looks just like that except it doesn’t have back to seat and I have no idea what stand it is to try order stuff for it like a back and a foot rest! I think it’s only like 17 1/2” wise
i have a new summit blade with those new safety things on the cables. I want to modify it so it has a cover like the old ones and like yours. Would you just use sheet metal and bend it around, drill a hole, and put a rivet in it? or would you use thicker metal and if so what would you think would do the job? Great video and Thanks.
Tie a strap about 6' from the top to bottom half at the center of the platform near the tree so if the bottom falls you can hoist it back up instead of bear hugging your way down(which I've had to do before +30' in the air).
I have 2 Summit climbers and this isn’t easy with the newer ones. They have the QuickDraw cable mechanism, it’s not really easy to release with one hand in that position.
I would tether the two sections with some rope or something just in case the bottom section falls down the tree...like a 4 foot piece of rope...great tips!!!! Wear that harness for sure!!! 5/5 -DUDE
On all the other videos I have seen everyone has a adjustable strap that is connect to the bottom or standing platform to the setting part or upper part of the tree stand so it can't go any where . Why don't you have have a strap that keeps them together . I must have watched 100 videos and your the only person that doesn't have a connecting strap .
i hunt with a climber 30-35 foot up when i hunt fields for shotgun season. i had just got out one morning and tried to adjust the bottom platform and it fell and i left my phone at the house so i had to wait three hours for my grandfather to see me up there.
I honestly can't believe no one has come out with a adjustable lower, that would use either a cable, or a handle to a gear with a kickable lock. I have thought of a few ways to do this, but never seem to get around to trying to make one, maybe this year. There has to be a way. It would make climbing stands way safer because you could adjust on the fly to get past big knots, or adjust as you go up on wide base trees. And a stronger aluminum stand with a comfortable seat. I love my XOP stand because it packs flat and is aluminum, but the seat sucks ass, and the stupid plastic knobs you have to loosen and tighten to collapse or set up the stand bind up all the damn time. My summit stand weighs a ton, has those lame plastic deals for getting your boots stuck in, and does not pack flat, but it is way more comfortable once it's set up. I am going to try using a seat from the new Summit surround seat on my XOP sit n climb XL. I also hate the cheap bar that came on my XOP to sit on while climbing, but I see they have updated that to square tube, so I will probably end up spending another $50 or whatever they charge me for that. By the time I'm done I going to have a $600 Frankenstand, lol
Why don't you just carry 3 or 4 of those easy start tree steps to help you get over that hump? When you start taking pins out of a foot stands; you are going to be crying for your buddy to go back to the house and get you a ladder so you can get down because it is hard as hell putting those pins through that loop in the cable standing on the ground. If you ever do that while you're in the tree, You'll be saying. '' what was I thinking? ''
Hey fool... after hunting years with a climber... you just get the right adjustment from a quick look ... if you had to adjust... come down the tree.. you're asking for trouble when you're adjusting the cables 20 feet up the tree...
Yeah but if you misjudge it, this will allow you to make the adjustment in the tree instead of having to climb all the way to the ground just to go back up again.
Not attacking, but I have used climbers for 30 years and though this might work, it is extremely risky and frankly I think sharing something like this and repeatedly stating you are not endorsing it is very irresponible. My suggestion is know the tree, know your linkage, be familiar with each circumstance before you climb. This is serious stuff, don't lose your life out of stupidity. Make it alive....
How to kill yourself adjusting a deer stand 101 folks lol. I always make sure my stand is set the way it should be so I don’t have to adjust anything I value my life if I need to make an adjustment I’ll climb to the base of the tree with my feet planted on the ground.
I will be using your video in my Hunter Ed class as an example of what NOT to do. Shame on you for not using any fall prevention and fall arrest equipment. Shame on you for encouraging reckless dangerous activities. Obviously you are just too lazy to spend the time to climb down and readjust your stand; or even find a safe tree. Falling out of a tree is the most common fatality and serious injury accident for deer hunters. My wife works in a special rehabilitation hospital for spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury. There is always a long waiting list for the beds. Of course, the beds are only for the fall survivors. She regularly has paralyzed patients who "only" fell a short distance. The name of the hospital is Rusk Rehabilitation. You need to reserve a bed now in case you survive your inevitable fall.
Critical Reasoning This is just a example of how to level He is not really climbing he is low to the ground and he said at 1:54 to wear your safety harness. . As long as you have your safety harness on and your setting down and you have a connecting strap that keeps the 2 pieces together one on both sides . I would rather have my standing platform adjusted at the right level than have it tilted up to high and cause my legs to hurt because of the angle , or at a downward angle because a downward angle can cause it to slip down the tree . I think the only thing he did wrong was not having the connection strap that keep the lower part from going to the ground . And Hunt man 01 's dad must have not been using a harness if a strap was the only thing that saved him . So don't be stupid , Keep the 2 pieces together with a strap , always wear a harness , only disconnect one side at a time , adjust in small amounts , Keep all your weight on the upper half while your seated and you will never fall out or endanger your self . I think the advantages of having the stand at the correct angle for hours of standing and setting out weigh leaving your stand at the improper angle causing you to have cramps ,muscle spasms, disc misalignment and a host of other things that can happen by not having the correct angle of the stand . You have a better chance of getting hurt from trying to climb down after one of your back disc gets moved around from setting at a bad angle all day .
Must agree with you here, and I’m a motorcycle riding, skydiving idiot. Hunting is usually solo, and this is soooooh dangerous. Guy should Just wear the safety harness in video, have the rope connecting both sections of stand, and do it safely. I have 2 sons, and they just might watch this and think it’s sissy to wear safety harness.

Good video, and very useful! I've done it before this way, but forgot how I did it! This is a good way to remember it, so thanks again!

Which summit stand is that? Wher e can I get a foot rest
hello how can i buy a tree chair like this?
Quick tip tie your platform to the upper so if the platform is to fall out you can pull it back up
Did you cut that upper stand off?

I do this all of the time. Sometimes you have to make trees that narrow work. Sometimes you can get away with starting at an extreme upwards angle.

thanks for the tips. very good.
I dropped my platform on saturday. thankfully my buddy was still under me and could push it back up. last time I dont attach my platform to my seat.
Lol, "we don't recommend this. And we don't endorse this in anyway." (But we's gonna make a video 'bout it and teach ya 'bout it)

always tie a safety rope from the top of the stand to the bottom so it wont drop more than 2 feet
I need to find someone to make me some clips to replace the spring clips on my goliath. I hate the spring clips.
