A classic episode for sure! I remember when it first aired and the next day EVERYONE on the school bus was talking about the Sorceress being Teela's mother like it was some huge soap opera twist! This show has stuck with me in so many ways over the years but this episode and that memory just might be my favorite! Great commentary. I can't wait to see Sorceress Teela in Revolution!
It's been a while since I recorded this commentary, so I apologize if I'm repeating myself here - But I believe that "Teela's Quest" is an episode that actually transcends the show itself - It really celebrates everything that made the Masters of the Universe mythos SO very special! :)
@@cerealgeekTV People tend to dunk on 80's cartoons for not having enough 'strong female characters', but Teela was A great example of one from the 1980s. Sure, she would get captured, and needed to be rescued sometimes, but she was also very resourceful, and can hold her own in A fight. She didn't need to be A 'Marry Sue' to be A 'strong female character'. She just needed to be A well rounded, likable character with real human flaws.
People tend to dunk on cartoons from the 1980s without actually having watched a single minute - MANY of the TALENTED (and accomplished) writers of these shows LOVED writing strong powerful women - To present the idea that strong female characters in entertainment is a new concept is not only moronic, but utterly delusional! :)
For what it is worth, I designed the "Fish Men" for this episode while I was working in Character Design and Layout before moving over to Storyboard. I also did the Layouts for scenes like He-man toppling the pillar near the end of the episode.
I learned of your Fish Man design when I visited your incredible house...both the house AND the design of the Fish Man caught me VERY much off guard! :)
This one of the He Man episodes I remember out of the gate, without having to prod my memory to work properly first. I loved Teela as a character, gave me Princess Leia vibes, and it was a great time. You could have strong female characters, without all the bollocks that goes with it in our modern era. And Sorceress was another of my favourites. Thanks James for the extra insight into the characters and story.
Yeah, the modern idea that there were NO strong female characters in the decades prior is laughable - We grew up with powerful characters in comic books and on our TV (and cinema) screens - And many of these powerful women were written by men that loved nothing more than showcasing kick-ass intelligent women on screen! :)
In my top five of favorite episodes. When I reflect on this series. Some of writing went over the heads of small children. It’s only as an adult do I appreciate the time put into these amazing stories. The Sorceress speech about “Her mother was a woman who loved her very much” delivered the weight and sacrifice she made for Teela to have a normal a life as possible before taking on a greater responsibility. Growing up in the palace, Adam’s personal guard and Captain of the Guard. All preparation for Grayskull, well rounded Guardian. I am big fan of endings. Last few seconds with the He-Man waving, Windradier taking off and score of foreboding more exciting adventures.
Those working on this show understood that these cartoons appealed to all ages - I have a fantastic internal memo from Straczynski who said that a convention he attended in 1985 was full of adults that absolutely loved the work that Filmation were doing with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe! :)
Another amazing retrospective to one of my favorite episodes. My mom, being adopted absolutely adores this episode. I agree that the early shows are unique and many of the season 2 episodes are too silly and undermine the antagonists. What episode do you all think that He-man truly “jumped the shark”? Clearly ‘The Greatest Show on Eternia” comes to mind.
It's really hard to say when He-Man "jumped the shark"...I think Rowby's "The Greatest Show on Eternia" is an episode that wouldn't even fit within the world created in the first season...but there were still numerous wonderful episodes to come in season two! :) - I always cite Beast Man as an example of how the villains "devolved" - When you see Beast Man in "The Dragon Invasion", and then compare THAT same character to the one that appears in "To Save the Creatures"...it's almost as if you're dealing with two completely different characters...
This episode definitely did a terrific job with the world building of Eternia and the characters who live there. Despite Dini's initial feelings about the show, this was still a wonderful episode. It makes you think of what could have been though, Teela one day inheriting the powers of Grayskull from her mother and perhaps aiding the siblings of power in their mission to protect the known universe. Ah, what could have been. Keep up the good work sir. :)
I think that Straczynski's "Teela's Triumph" is a rather wonderful sequel to this episode...and gives us an even closer look at (as you say) what could have been! :)
When I was working on the official TH-cam channel all those years ago, one of my plans was to create "new" specials, pulling together episodes with a story arc of sorts - "Teela's Quest", "Into the Abyss", and "Teela's Triumph" would've made for a rather awesome trilogy! :)
@@cerealgeekTV Each Teela focused episode, does properly focus on her development as a character. :) Perhaps that can still be a thing on this channel instead?
Wonderful! I remember your commentaries from the old official channel. The Teela’s Quest one I listened to quite few times so I’m fairly certain this is a new commentary. This is also my 2nd favorite episode. “Origin of the Sorceress” being my top favorite with “The Abyss” rounding out my favorite trilogy. All having to do with Teela and/or the Sorceress. Teela was the first character I saw the first time I turned the channel to a He Man episode. It was the scene where she was testing the laser lasso and tried it on Orko. By the time the series ended she had become my favorite character. Well, puberty may have had something to do with it as well 🤣😂😜 As always excellent commentary 👍👍
GREAT top three episodes you have there! :) - And thank you for the kind words about the commentary - Believe it or not, according to my schedule, I have two more He-Man episode commentaries to come before the end of the year...:)
I get why Teela's memory is erased. But I always wished the sorceress had given Teela at least one hug or a motherly kiss on her cheek or forehead, before doing the mind wipe.

Everytime I read comments that "He-Man" was just another 20 minute long commercial for toy I want strangle someone... Lou Scheimer knew the simplest fact that with his budget limitations the storytelling has priority otherwise they would be screwd. This is my second favourite episode next to "Into the abbys". I bet you guy had the same feeling watching all those shows set in somehowe limmited time and space where after the whole adventure "everything was back to normal" and the universe was "reset". Each insight into some "bigger picture" (like the origins of Teela in this case) or behind the well known scenery was so damn precious.
Those that throw the "toy commercial" accusation at these shows have probably only ever watched about five minutes of the specific cartoon they are targeting - These people ALWAYS forget the level of talent (working at every level) on these cartoons - I once had a conversation with someone who was going after He-Man for being a "toy commercial"...when I mentioned that Straczynski had worked on the show, he stopped trying to make his point and honestly replied, "Oh, maybe I should check out the cartoon"...thus affirming that he had never watched a single minute of the cartoon! :)
Thank you for doing this commentary for us. As an adoptive parent, it is obviously one of my favorites. Though, unfortunately, I don't have the skill of man at arms and my son's birthparents are not from Eternia, we both could relate to this episode.🥰
I thought it was kinda cool that, back in the 70s and 80s, there were quite a few shows that dealt with astronauts/space. He-Man, Blackstar, Buck Rogers(though I sadly didn't see that until later), Jason of Star Command, I could go on.
