This is a review of the iconic Martin D-28 Dreadnaught acoustic guitar. This particular guitar was rescued from a local pawn shop where humidity stood the chance to cause serious damage. A check of the serial number indicates that the guitar was produced in 2020, which indicates it is the modern design with forward shifted bracing.
The guitar was purchased with my own money and I am in no way affiliated with or compensated by Martin Guitar Co. That said, this review is a matter of opinion, as with any review of any product.

I didn't recognize the chords at the very beginning, but that sure sounded to me like Rod Stewart's The First Cut is The Deepest.

Nope. The chorus section of the song I was playing is very similar to the Rod Stewart melody, but the chords you didn't recognize would've been the verse section. It is a song by a person who is not known mainly as a musician.
      Good guess though.

My D-18 MD makes a dinosaur feel better. Martin magic I reckon.

Its an amazing guitar indeed. The first time felt to me like holding a Rolls Royce in my hand. And it will only sound better through the years. I do like to play a D18 (2018) for a completely different vibe. Also an amazing guitar, but just different.

When I get a chance to handle one of those, I'll be sure to check it out. Just curious, does the D18 produce a "twangier" sound than the D28? Or is it warmer?

@@NatesHouseofSound Its sort of twangier in the treble region. Its a different kind of warmth. Due to the mahogany and to the fact that its scalloped. There is some extra sharpness in the highs in the D18. The highs on the D28 sound more rounded, and 'warmer' in this sense. The scalloped braces give a warm feel to the sound due to the extra woody bass. Though the D28 still has more bass. Lastly, the tones in de D18 blend more, and the D28 has more note separation. Theyre quite different. But if I had to pick one, it would be the d28. Its a bit more versatile and better suited to my playing style. The D18 can feel sluggish when you want to pick up speed, and single lead runs arent as impressive.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. The woods I had considered, but the bracing is something I hadn't really given much thought. I believe the modern D-28's have forward-shifted X bracing, which is supposed to improve resonance and sustain by creating a larger slab of unbraced top behind the bridge which facilitates enhanced vibration, but beyond that I hadn't considered other aspects of the bracing. I appreciate the insights. As an aside, so far, one of the best contrasting tones against the D-28 that I've found was from a Taylor 214ce. The Taylor really sings pretty in the highs and midranges, and she's a loud one. Together they make for a sweet mix while still maintaining their own sonic identity. Like you said about the D-18, two entirely different characters.

What did you pay for it?

I had to cough up 18 Ben Franklins for it, plus the grease for Uncle Sam's palms. She's worth it though!
