  • I took a drive along the Alabama's Gulf Coast, site of the beautiful beach towns Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Later the wife and I enjoyed drinks and a walk on the white sand beach.

The Gulf beaches of Alabama and Florida are beautiful and underrated. Gulf Shores is nice, but I think Fort Walton Beach, Florida is even better, because there is a stretch of tallish , well preserved sand dunes and the sunsets are spectacular.

Went to Orange Beach in 2021, I loved it because there wasn't a boardwalk, ton of junk shops, kind of quiet and laid-back. Wife & son didn't like it for the same reason I liked it! Our usual vacation spots are Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach and Ocean City MD. When we went, they were getting back to normal from COVID, and a lot of restaurants were not open because they couldn't find help. Probably better by now. 14:11 shows him on a causeway and that is the giant resort we stayed at.

I've had a handful of vacations down there since the late 80's when it was about two thirds less developed than what it is now. In the early to mid 90's was when the big high rises started to get put up, most everything before that was no more than 4-6 stories high. Have had A lot of good memories there but it has changed so much and it isn't as quaint as it used to be.
Five years ago in the middle of the Summer I went with a group, we all drove several vehicles down and I took my brand new car as a "break it in" road trip. We rented a really large beachside house in Fort Morgan which is a bit less congested.. really enjoyed it in that area I sat right on the beach everyday, nearly all day long and maintained a good steady buzz for a solid week being a beach bum. I couldn't believe how much the town grew and the amount of traffic in the busier areas that has increased a lot.. of course it was the in the middle of peak season too. It looked pretty mellow and slow for the most part during your trip, I'll have to try the off season like late September into early October next time.
I will also say the sand is not as pristine white as it once was. It has kind an tan, off white shade to it. I'll refrain from saying why as I'm sure somebody will reply to me and tell why it is that way.
I miss it down there though, every time I stay down I don't want to go home.

Yup-the Alabama Gulf Coast is definitely the Redneck Riviera. The Florabama is home of the annual “frozen mullet toss” where 100’s gather to see who can toss a mullet furthest while enjoying their favorite adult beverages.
    Excellent drone footage again btw!

I'm glad you finally got to do a video on Gulf Shores, in my mind the star of the Gulf. I first visited it 60 years ago when I was 16 to visit with my brother in Bon Secour who recently moved there from Atlanta and met his future wife. At that time a small two lane state highway (Hwy 59) went down there and had a small swinging or draw bridge to get over the intercoastal canal. The beach was BEAUTIFUL with sand dunes everywhere and wild sea oats growing until a few years later a hurricane flattened them out. About the only visitors were the state college students on breaks and during the winter the "Snow Birds" who would come down from the northern states to stay during the winter. I had many first's there including my first date kiss on the beach. I have only been to another beach during that time is in Florida. To me, the place to go is Gulf Shores.

My family has been in the real estate business in the Gulf Shores area for a long time. We vacationed there many times back in the early 60's. The place was awesome. So many good memories. But the hurricanes over the years really changed the landscape. The small beach cottages we stayed in as kids were wiped off the face of the earth. But the memories never die.

Thanks for showing us what this looks like. My family is from all over Alabama and they literally never go down there. They only go to Florida beaches. It's not that us Alabamians don't go to our beaches, because we definitely do, we just rather not take others from other states with us to those beaches lol. We'll take yall to the West Florida beaches AKA Lower Alabama or Florabama (Pensacola, Ft. Walton Beach, Destin, Panama City Beach, Scenic Highway 30 beaches) because it takes less time to get to those beaches vs ours...too many trap towns and too much traffic in Mobile & Baldwin Counties in AL

My family used to go to Gulf Shores every summer when I was growing up. All my friend's families did too. It was a great place to go in the '70s. Small beach town feel and felt like a second home. I still remember when the tallest structure there was the ferris wheel at the small amusement park. It was just a cool, quirky but fun place when I was young up through my teen years. But, a couple of hurricanes later and everything changed. All of a sudden, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach became a retirement haven for people up north. Next thing you know, it starts with one ugly condo and now there's dozens of them. The small beach town charm was gone and it ain't coming back. Hardly anyone I know goes down there anymore.

I was looking in that area for this coming June, and the prices for ALL hotels (including this one) were considerably higher...like $400's. It was unbelievable! Nice hotel though! Best Western has stepped up their game for many years now. I have come across (and paid) for some that were in the $300's. One I found in the Pensacola Beach area for June, was in the $300 or $400. We FINALLY found one in Navarre Beach that was about $200 a night, and that was after major searching! We were fortunate to have found it! Good job on this video!

All the condominiums you see (and the biggest percentage of homes) is rental properties. People live in other states and hire rental management companies to clean, maintain and rent the variety of housing available to weekly rentals of families vacationing.
The residents of the island towns live off the beach in residential areas that you didn’t show on this video.
The winter time is filled with snowbirds that typically rent for 2-3 months of the year while their homes are covered in snow.
The weather is typically mild, and most visitors take photos of themselves wading in the water during the Christmas holiday to send to those in frozen climates during that day.
We are always grateful for tourism journalists to visit our area and give a look to future visitors. Thank you for making this video!

Played this video about 2 months ago, and I need to warn viewers, the music played during the drone footage is highly addictive. I began to dance when listening, and I have not stopped since. No food. No water. No bodily functions. Just, dancing. Sure, I've lost a few pounds, and my dog and cat both died while I could not pull myself away to care. Not sure how much longer I can keep going, but I will write again in a few months...

I mentioned in your MS video I have a vacation condo in Orange Beach. I'm not on the beach but in a boating community on a bay. Right on the water so a nice view. But more affordable than the condos on the beach. I love it there. I enjoy riding my bike on the Gulf State Park trails and playing golf down there. Most people go to the beach side of the FloraBama bar/grill. It's bigger and they have 4-5 bands playing throughout the facility. And believe it or not they hold church on Sundays there. Wear your shorts and flip flops to church. During the Winter it is packed out due to all the snow birds staying down there.

Me & my Daughter were here at he same time as yall! I wish we would have stayed there. I paid way more than $137 a night and was disappointed with several things. Granted we did have a full kitchen, and more beds than we needed but we didn't need the kitchen or extra room. We sleep together especially while in a Motel. I seen Best Western while I was looking at rooms/reviews but I thought just like you mentioned, it wouldn't be that nice. I am amazed! We plan of heading back there this year & we will definitely be staying here. Love the content. New follower.
