I THINK Derren Litten's absence from the writing of these two episodes might be the reason everything's just that bit...off. I hadn't noticed she wrote these with two other guys. She usually collaborates with Litten. Hence the cheap use of physical comedy with Jamie falling three times, and the neighbor getting sprayed four times, etc. I suspect one of the writers may be American.
