Who would have thought that youtube would turn mechanics into heros? Well done boys - great video. Every car bloke needs a Berto in their corner to help make dreams happen.
For real, those Falcon/Territory dash boards are nightmares. BA Falcons are known for their blend door shaft snapping. Not a problem in hot Australia, but try going with no heat in the middle of winter at the bottom of the South Island. The entire dash has to come out. It's horrible. That Barra engine makes up for it though, one of the best engines ever built... just keep the bolts on the low side of the intake manifold soaked in penetrating oil for when the upper gasket blows, because it will. You don't have to remove the manifold but it makes the job a hundred times easier and those bolts love to get stuck, the gaskets are only 30 bucks each.
Great to see! This is what the car scene is all about, getting their beast into the shed and working on it. I have an XC falcon and a GQ patrol with Barra turbo set ups. Learnings to pass on: - zf box should run a seperate cooler to avoid the oil milkshake that can occur - Barras have an oil switch (on/off) - consider a seperate gauge with psi. - can Barra system worked well bridging the GQ dash, etc and the Barra stuff. - run an Atomic performance 71 degree thermostat (runs around 80-85 degrees with gq rad, etc; around 10-15 degrees cooler than the stock one.. - be aware of your duty cycle with your injectors. Don't go too big. - speak to an auto shop in relation to the converter setup with diff rations and big tyres. - when the engine is out do the rear main seal (hard to do once in). - make sure you have a good catch can/breathing system from the valve cover. If restricted it will blow out the rear seal.
Wow! It's turning into a full on build. 1st rule of a project car. Budget twice as much as you think it will cost. 😁 Looking forward to the end result.
A Good Sense of humour and a dash of mechanical knowledge always comes in handy plus Berto doesn’t take up much room in the workshop Great episode guys 😂
Barras are great engines! Ive always had falcons before i ever got a 4b. Theres a reason they were the choice for taxis! They go forever. Also had a jeep wrangler, same size motor and the car weighed nothing, yet had no power! Could hardly use 5th gear once i put bigger wheels on it! Barra got plenty of go in it!
i dun had a barra once, she woz a green top ute.... dun sat on 160 out on the rural roads, purring at 3 grand. she necked kays faster than a bogan neck piss. alllll days long... best car ever.
Berto what a legend, you have a fair go at what your good at Maybe the director should give you a introduction before every episode, i notice you give a quick wave to your audience at the start keep up the good work guys
Is Berto on the books? As a mechanic myself I hope he is haha every mechanic loves to help their mate until they find out it’s going to consume their life for 6mths lol
Haha yeah Burto has always been paid, he is on full time with me now on a wage. I do most of the filming and editing, he does most of the mechanic work
Well technically they are now onto the 3rd engine, whew Tyler goes through engines like Sam Young goes through fart sounds! Lucky he has Burto in his corner, this would be the most expensive TH-cam channel in Australia, think the lest he could do is supply some decent tools for the Burto! 🤣
Gee Tyler I hope you're paying Burto with beer 🍺 and peanuts 🥜 wot a effort but well done every shed needs a Burto I know mine does I bet Demi will pick Rose Gold anyway cheers legends ☺️
fkn bs. watch vise grip garage, low buck garage, this n that garage,, ect.. cars with flat tires for 25 yrs,,still hols air,, you know sht.. rest of the world is 40 yrs ahead of aus.. we have stupid laws..a 4x4 is considered a car, so it has car laws.. not 4x4 laws.. or pay dumb engineers kkkkkkkkk,s. clip board worriers.. your not supposed to have fun in aus.. its a convict colony.. go to jail, strait to jail..
For the dipstick problem, you could measure the height from the pan rail, than drill a hole in the side of the oil pan, weld a tube into the rear side of the oil pan and use it for the dipstick, your oil level in the pan will read right on the dipstick
Alternatively buy an oil height sensor for a newer motor and tap that into the sump at the height the oil should be. I would be happy to run without a dipstick, but Tyler obviously used to Patrol engines think they all burn oil!! 😉
Luv these build ep's. Realistic. Have fun with the ZF box. Just wrote off a territory, too expensive to rebuild the box and the territory not worth that much. Should at least get yours serviced before going in. Sensitive to oil, oil expensive, computer expensive, solenoid issue's, can have issue's getting different box, to talk to diff engines, with diff ecu, etc. Have fun. Watching with great interest
Actually I think Tyler would welcome failures because it provides content for future videos. The Std Barra turbo’d in the 80 series won’t last if it’s driven hard because the conrods just aren’t up to it. So if the 80 is driven on a difficult track they’ll be doing another engine swap before you know it for a factory turbo’d Barra that’s got stronger conrods. I’m really looking forward to seeing how long a Falcon auto box lasts on the cruiser without failing though if they do challenging tracks with it. This video was a great watch, thoroughly enjoyed it.
@@cliffbooth7075 The zf is in a tonne of Dicovery's with no issues, they are bulletproof - but you need to change (part of) the oil every 80 thousand kms and make sure it has it own oil cooler, something no manufacturer actually did. But if you call ZF that is their recommendation. Also the oil is now less than $30 per litre from repco, and you can get it on sale often.
Any more hidden vehicles you have that you haven't shared? 😁 You're starting to gather quite a collection of engines, albeit all in bits and pieces. 😁 At least you'll have plenty of spares if you need them. Looking forward to the build progression.
Mate, loving the content, buttttt 100% put a billet flexplate and arp studs in now that the engine and trans are separated as its a good thing to do to future proof the engine for later on down the track when you start adding performance mods. Also seperate the head off the short block and put a mls gasket in now as it'll save you money and headaches later down the track also, as you don't really now how good the head gasket is on it now and when you start adding power you'll lift the head and might as well chuck some head studs in too. Very cheap and easy things to do now for later down the track. These are a few things i wished i did myself when i had my motor out for the first time. Learn from my mistakes and save yourself the headaches, lol. Keep up the good work 👍
@@TylerThompson90 ford explorers are hands down one of the most unloved cars in Australia so makes sense it would have a poor service history. No doubt you didn’t pay much, so good for other parts anyway 👍🏻
I'm thinking you could cut the sump horizontally, flip it around, & reweld it. Simples I really need to ask, how do you untake the gearbox off? I cannot go to sleep tonight, without knowing the truth Rose gold would be funny, but I think the rocker cover will have stripes to match the exterior
Gday, you can almost guarantee nothing goes to plan and budgets blow out easily, at least now you have a shit load of spare engine parts mate, great episode, cheers
Did you know all BA BF FG taxis came out with the XR6 bottoms ends? Matter of fact all LPG Falcons were XR6 engines by the BF. Those engines are so easy to work on. Get an old taxi. Put a turbo barra and away you go. But these engines do eat cams! And also, if you're running a BF engine, a lot of the BA parts are not compatible, throttle, body, etc
The gas engines also came out with all the Xr6 turbo internals to handle the heat that lpg burns at. You can literally get a gas engine and bolt a turbo to it with little extras needed to make decent power
I honestly thought oh no not another barra build but I forget it's your first build with one so I'll hang around for yet another TH-cam barra build. If it wasn't for Berdo and I'm being honest, you would of lost my attention for this barra swap because everyone is doing something to do with barra and it's getting old for someone like me that literally spends hours on the Tube. Its none of anyone's business but by God I hope your looking after ol mate jumping on board with you and channel family. 👍bro I'm putting the challenge out to you make this the fastest 80 on the Tube that would be content I'm interested in. Make it better then sooty and Sam's & Built not bought
Yes guys if doing this swap get a complete running car as a donor car all things matched correctly, these ford tend to be very fiddle if using bits from other cars , I don't recommend sticking a turbo straight on it , it will need to be rebuilt for turbo use or re rated heads and pistons , well so I,m told

Safety 3rd. Good idea bringing burto in, he's hilarious and a good add on to the channel 😂
Watching your mechanics tv personality change and become more comfortable in front of the camera is awesome! Can’t wait to see this build done!
Thanks mate!
Hot Tip. Make sure you check for rust where the Inner Guards bolt to the fire wall. Common rust area for 80s. Easier to repair now

Excellent work Tyler. I only wish when I was doing my cars in the early days, I had a friend who was a mechanic; well done Berto awesome stuff.
How funny is Berto as in my last comment Berto's Toyota Wreckers as there's no dismantling here, keep up the good work Tyler
Best decision you've ever made, looking forward to seeing it
awesome Tyler, Burto needs a hoist, top work Burto
You need to get Burto some tools, and a bench or two, awesome job. 👍

Big cloud of soot from the datsun but when the Cruiser pulled out of the shed, no smoke at all.
Hard to smoke when it doesn't have an engine in it 😂
Definitely different that's for sure mate 🤙🏻🏴
Loving the build episodes
Looks hectic!!!
All I would recommend is making sure it has a good tuner personally I would go to cms in Preston’s Sydney I know it’s a big drive but well worth it
Thanks!
I never understood why Ford only used this gem of an engine in Australia and not in the rest of the world.
Hey mate any reason you choose the barra from a ford Territory instead of a ba is their any advantages going with the Territory engine
Love the banter

nice and purple surely.

Why are you putting a Barra in it?
Should have gone straight to an FTE
FTE is 20K for a low km engine, Barra is 1K
Have you seen how much torque a turbo barra makes with 20psi? And will make torque over a wider rev range
It will be interesting if the Barra uses less fuel!
the FZ was getting around 22L per hundred on road, couple of mates have turbo Barra's and get around 14-15L per hundred
My Barra turbo in my GQ does 16L per 100 on 33s. I was very surprised 🤞
