Your test seems to confirm my experience with short scopes and the Vulcan 9 not resetting. In the Pacific Northwest 3:1 scope is common because of the deep but tight anchorages. I switched to the Excel #2 and have had no issues this summer.
    Thank you for the testing!

Your small anchor testing has been perfect for me to figure out an anchor for my Contessa 26. I have an Ecxel #2, and have also purchased a Viking 10 which I will be trying out this coming (Souther Hemisphere) summer. I deleted the cobbestone when comparing the V10 versus this Vulcan anchor, as that substrate does not exist in my neck of the woods. The V10 for me therefore comes out at 2.5 pts higher performance wise - but the Vulcan still rates well overall and I am sure it would do fine for me too. How good is it that we have these new age anchors compared to years yonder when a CQR was just about the only option. Donation (small, hey I'm a broke yachtie lol) sent. Cheers mate.

Hi Steve, thanks for the video on the Vulcan, great work. I’ve recently purchased a 25kg Vulcan for our 11,000kg monohull yacht (Rocna recommended size). I have a high strength 8mm G70 all chain rode. I’ve deployed the anchor about two dozen times now and so far I’m pleased with performance. We had one night with a 180deg wind shift, blowing about 20kts, when I think the anchor did trip but immediately reset. It was middle of the night when this happened (isn’t it always?) and I watched the event on our Navionics track. We had about 4x depth out, don’t know the seabed but the anchor came up clean so not mud for sure. It seems to be a significant improvement in performance compared to the 30kg Bruce that it replaced.

Very interesting. Love my spade (thank you). But were I starting again, my primary might be the Vulcan. Mainly due to price. That Spade was not cheap, but I do like to sleep at night.

In this test it looks like you used 80' chain in all the tests. I seem to remember you also tested the other anchors in this weight class using 12-15' chain and 3.5:1 scope. Which chain length and scope does the comparison chart represent?
Asking because using a long length of 5/16" chain adds another 20lb to lift (35'-15'=20') when anchoring in 35' depth and boats using this size anchor almost never have an anchor windless. Thanks.

The first column on the chart corresponds to testing at 3.5:1 scope and rode with12 feet of chain + nylon. The second column on the chart corresponds to testing at 5:1 scope and rode with 12 feet of chain + nylon.

Does next week's shakup involve learning how many pounds the puppy can hold before dragging?

After watching this this is the best all around anchor.
I got a 12kg for my Macgregor 26M. I shall sleep very well from now on ! 😀😊

@jerryf609 very happy 😊 launch is easy and sets very well on first time. No dragging so far, but I did not encounter high wind or Thunderstorms yet...

im thinking of a 4kg vulcan for a 18ft sail boat 1800.. for bc coast. it will be easy enough for me t carry back t he cockpit. also its nearly half price for it compared to a 6kg.
