I don't like how the pianists tempo is inconsistent in the first bars already, but the dynamic design HE chose was really really elaborate and beautiful
I agree. I find Maisky's style of playing most of Bach's suites has always been much too flowery as well as emotional, sometimes good, sometimes inappropriate and usually ending up with too much self-induced variations and tempo, which I find annoying, especially when the pianist got lost in the latter part! Impromptu performing with accompaniment is not appropriate, IMO.
I don't like the pianist at all. Besides, why gesticulate so much for so few notes? She's far too nervous; she'd be more precise if she calmed down a bit.
I think the pianist doesn't blend well with Mr. Maisky's playing here in this performance. Rather, she exploits the piano part accompaniment all to her satisfaction only, without any comunication with Mr. Maisky. But I do like Mr. Maisky's persistent choice of dynamics. All in all, bravo for both!
Look for Maisky's Max Bruch: Kol Nidrei, Op.47. With a full chamber orchestra, his cello dominates and you can really appreciate Mischa's grandeur a the top cellist of today.
I'm not sure if my previous comment went through, but in case it did not, the pianist is Lily Maisky, Mischa's daughter and with his son Sascha (violin) they are the Maisky Trio. I said in my earlier comment that, in this piece in particular, the piano seems to overshadow the cello. This was a piece for cello not piano....
Amazing! But the pianist just can’t stop moving so it takes away from the bigger picture. The cellist is amazing! The pianist I’d just terrible. Her tempo is all over and she is not musical at all. But the cellist has amazing creativity and thought out of the box to express in his own way! BRAVO!!!
Eugene Nizker That’s all well and good, but the ears hear and thus judge. This performance lacks the magic that other performances of the same piece have. Why? Because there is a lack of cohesiveness and communication between the musicians. Or worse yet, they choices they made for this piece that were just really jarring and unappealing.
The word for 'tempo being all over the place' is rubato, and it's not only legitimate, it's virtually demanded in late Romantic music like this. And of course, pianist and cellist will have played and discussed the speed and dynamics for every single note together, so you're actually blaming Mischa Maisky too.
Aquest Maisky és un verdader huracà de virtuosisme violoncel.lístic, encara que potset de vegades es passa una mica de frenada.Ni en Pai Casals tenia aquesta força expressiva. J.A.Vives. 7-9-2020.
Not the best rendition of the Elegie. Has all the emotion of clockwork. Pianist is almost entirely insensitive to the music and rather indifferent to the cellist. She plays slightly ahead of the beat.
Nope, don't like the interpretation at all, all the emotion and personality of the piece is lost to oblivion. I'm not sure what they were going for here but it feels like they forgot or misunderstood what an elegy is.
I'm sorry but I don't agree. Elegy means expressive, full sound, melancholic. I don't know exactly what you imagine under elegy but it's certainly not a baroque piece! If I don't know anything about music I wouldn't say anything and especially if I couldn't even play it!!!
Quite obviously, the daughter does not (unfortunately) possess the musical talent or even the sensitivity of her father. Too bad. (However, she still does need to make a living. Itzhak Perlman also has a mediocre pianist daughter who needs to somehow make a living banging the keys.)
@John Hajje I don't know if you're a cellist or anything in classical music, but that "song" (let's call it piece, right?) is more expressive than difficult, specially that passage, that's more likely a scale. Besides, you're definitively not suppose to go THAT fast there, so it's normal he's failling it. @Sea Rasp, I completely agree with you, besides he should breathe more (and it's an elegy, less dynamics!)
@John Hajje Elgar is greaaaat!! :) You're right about the fact that the age matters, but look at Casals (an other cello god, they are too many TwT), I was still playing at 90... Besides, if you can't play something fast, just slow down the tempo, and here Maisky is playing too fast for the original tempo too xD

Tuve el privilegio de escuchar directamente. Misha en una presentación en la Ciudad de México. Admirable. (Juve Flores desde México). Aplausos.
This a perfect example of the difference between an accompanist and pianist
Accompanist is far too loud , and lacks sensitivity. I think she's a really 2nd or 3rd rate accompanist.
You can not like his interpretation but the tone... my God.
Also, Maisky has transcended any form of critique :) All we can do is be blessed.
I was going to criticize the pianist, but I realized that she is Mischa's daughter

The tempo change is written into the music. It is in the score!
Mish'as genuine Montagne cello sounds amazing. A really big cello, compared to say an Amati or Gofrillo.
It‘s so sad that they recorded it this way

Aside from the piano problem, the miking doesn't really bring out the sound of the cello.

Bad audio quality.

Agreed.
The piano really drowns out the cello and doesn't compliment it. Found it very off-putting
