The texture is a nitpick for me but the ankles are a dealbreaker.
Same. Everything from the nose, texture, ankle swivels, head swapping...it's enough to say no. I want to like them but my OCD is kicking in on these!
Yeah those ankles are awful. And I hate that Donnie's staff wrap doesn't match his own head wrap.
Leo and Donnie having swapped heads + shoulder pins + wonky Raph + THOSE ankles + Cottage cheese skin = SUPER easy pass!

@@Nediablo I already made the decision that these were Shart a few weeks back for exactly the same reasons from the earlier pictures put out so I went for the Sketch Turtles as in my mind they are actually something new from Playmates & I'm so glad I got these instead. Much Better...

Because its a lazy parts reuse from fogures a decade ago. The toon colored classics from tru. Hence the oversized figs from those 7" figs looking stupid with vintage style figs
New Playmates 40th Anniversary Turtles. We took the asphalt texture from the roof stands and applied it to their skin! Buy ‘em now.
Playmates Last Ronin figure had alot of articulation.
I agree with all the criticism but still think they're worth picking up. Flawed but worth the asking price. At $13, you're getting your money's worth. Hasbro would be charging you $24.99 and telling you it's a "Deluxe" figure because of all the accessories.

For 13 bucks each these are a HOMERUN! No other company would give us this much for 13 bucks. Honestly I feel the issues are very nipicky. If this was a hasbro product these would be 25+. You mentioned origins several times and those go for 20 bucks. To me this is the best value of the year for very solid action figures

Looks like the bandana is a separate piece that's been glued on crooked. At least I hope it isn't sculpted like that. 😅

I still wish they went with Raph's old shade of green, instead of the pale green shade they've been using on his vintage rereleases.

playmates needed to get in on the renewed/rekindled love of Turtles. We wanted updated versions of the toys we grew up with, playmates clearly didn't hear anything because they kept re- re- re- releasing the same old thing every 5 years to capitalize on some sort of anniversary. So Super7 did something about it, and playmates didn't like that at all. Made Super7 quit and readjust their gameplan. And these are what playmates gave us.
I can look past the textured skin and the rotating ankles, but a double-sided flail? Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness! I think we found a worse weapon than the nunchucks! 😮
I think you're right. This maybe a "test" run. If this line does well, They'll probably rerelease these with some minor changes and hopefully swap Don and Leo's heads to make them more vintage toy accurate.
Them ankles taking it back to early 2000s ToyBiz. They're capable of adding articulation with ball joints and ball hinges and decide to drop the ball with those awful cuts/swivels. Any added articulation to these Turtles' legs is pointless if the foot can't pivot. I'm about to buy a 3D printer and do what they should have lmaooo
This absolutely feels like a one-off, as a mirror to the Target "first" Turtles. Wouldn't expect more.
Yeah these and the Target ones in my opinion as well were a special license for the 40th. Could they be the base body for another tmnt release. Be well.

I had really high hopes for these. Seen a couple reviews now and i have to admit, i am less likely to pick them up. I really dont know why they didnt go the origins route when it comes to articulation. That to me is the biggest let down. I was ok with the orange peel skin, and i love the colored weapons, and the display stands are a nice bonus. If they had more articulation i wouldve definitely been in, but i just dont see enough improvement to buy another set of playmates retro style. I think the ankle articularion killed it for me.

I wasn’t into these at all until I saw em on the shelf all at once and I scooped em up. I actually really dig em. They hit me just right. The swivel ankle is my only major complaint. I’d like to see em continue the line. A 2nd, villain wave would be great. Shredder, Bebop, Rocksteady and Foot. Maybe a “Friends” wave of April, Casey, Mondo and Usagi. Follow that up with another villain wave. Krang, Baxter, Leatherhead and Mutagen Man.
Im excited to see what splinter and shredder will look like.
Playmates have barely tried for years. I still watch reviews in hopes they improve, but it's been the opposite for years. Another pass.

I feel the same way, like they are almost perfect, playmates was so close, but dropped the ball, the colors, the leo and don heads, the color on Don's bo, and the articulation, I don't understand why they went with the Mutant Mayhem articulation instead of the Rise of the tmnt articulation, the Rise figures had so much better articulation, the feet were able to go up and down and they had a rocker kind of joint, man they were so close
They would have been gret replacements for the Super7 figures. The texture and ankle joints are abysmal.
Playmates always goes the extra mile to fuck up just a little bit.
I just picked these guys up. Excellent figures that are definitely worth that 12.97 price point.
I been championing for these for the longest, this was like a slap in the face lol swivel ankles. Ugh
The nose and distorted face I think are homage to the first season of the show (really go back and watch it. huge noses) and the comic book. Which had a lot of pretty strange expressions on the turtles. Pretty sure it's a deliberate stylistic choice. The texture is similar to the movie star turtles. The ankles... yeah I have no idea why the ankles. I didn't even know these were a thing till I found them at walmart today and they were marked down on the discount rack, so I grabbed them. Didn't pay full price and I actually find them rather uniquely charming, so I'm kind'a digging them. They did not have Raph, so I need to find him somewhere.
I’d be all in for more but I would like them to release the turtles without the weird texture, better ankles, and the correct heads. They should release thomas a mass release instead of dumb exclusives etc.
Lets be real, for the price , ankle swivels are fine. if they are willing to do the origins style ankle joints then they should up it to 18-20$ now we'd be ok paying it but playmates is still a company that aims at kids, will they be willing to pivot more to collectors? who knows
Well they obviously try with their Collector’s line from a few years back as well as the Last Ronin and Mirage Turtles to appeal to collectors. The problem is that the final product is still a cheap kid’s toy instead of a higher end figure aimed at adults. And that’s fine if you’re an adult who collects older toys and like modern stuff that reflects the simplicity of older toys. But for collectors who want a more serious product their bar is set way to low. Playmates always shows they have potential to be great, but they always manage to screw it up somehow. That’s why people go to Neca and Super7.
The Ralph head is crooked
I passed. With limited funds and the 40th anniversary reissues, i have to be really selective. The asking price is acceptable for what they really are, but the overall execution did not merit a purchase in my honest opinion. Definitely will be interested in seeing if they do remasters of bebop, rocksteady and maybe the “updated” turtles with smooth skin in the future
Pizza Tossing TMNT had that texture. but also why not take a spin with what they did for the Stranger things 2 pack turtles. ? those have good articulation.
Yeah I agree, if they gave joints/articulation similar to MOTU origins and ditch that weird texture I'd be all over these.
I just want the OG figures with MOTU Origins style articulation. That's all they had to do. Hell, throw out the bases and leave the weapons unpainted. That just seems like unnecessary money that could have been spent making the figures better. I also hate the pinned joints, and those ankles are just awful.
Man.. I remember when they did the 84 Mirage Turtles. I think those hit around 2014. Wanted those so badly, and when I finally got them in in hand, the lack of the wrist swivel just ruined the whole thing. I think these are less offensive, but it is sort of how I feel about those ankles. The issue is, it’s 2024 and we’re still seeing those 2014 molds, untouched! Think the B&W set just made its way out again.. So, I think with these, we get what we got and that’s going to be it. Can’t see them redoing the ankles. Which is a shame, bc they really are so close to being amazing, especially for the price.

let’s be honest, these are a let down. The textured skin on the turtles, the articulation leaves a bit to be desired, the wrong heads on leo and Donny…. we wanted more. fortunately super 7 gave us that MORE, without textured skin.
If you want the origins style, we have to make do with Turtles of Grayskull
Except Super7 is 4 times more expensive for no real reason.

Raph looks like his eyes are not aligned correctly... they looks slanted over to the side when you look straight on.
I don’t ask for much and I haven’t been this excited for new Turtle toys in a while. The textures don’t bother me at all. Hoping to get some villains down the line. Especially Shredder. He could use more articulation.
Looking at the old punk styled drawings from the old cards and on the boxes on these. I think they might try to hit a mix between the old classic figures and the punk style? The switched faces between Lego and Donnie fits packaging front art, but I dont know if thats old art reused?

No1, I hate those joints where the Peg shows from the front. No2, Teeth Not painted on one side of the mouth on 2 of the Turts. No3, Skin texture is terrible. No4, Two of the Turts heads are mixed up and on the wrong bodies. How does Playmates get this so wrong I mean its basic things that should have been decided in the Design process. Hatters right they almost had a HomeRun and Peeeps would have gone nuts for these.
No2. Do you mean the half-gritted teeth? That’s just the original design from their ‘80’s line, can’t fault them for that really, it’s was just another detail to differentiate among the characters.
Whens like the official release date? Are they only in stores or will they be on walmart and target online?
They're SO CLOSE on this, I wish they would listen to fans, because everyone's saying the same things. This could be a hit line if they get it right.
People are buying them despite corners being cut and passion not being presented. So in the end Playmates wins and the line is already succeeding

These are Walmart exclusives and from what I can recall it'll just be the Turtles.
The ankles, swapped faces, and texture are not my favorite. But I’m still grabbing them. I think the ankles bother me the most though. I kind of like the face swap on a way as I feel that Leo looks pretty bad ass. I also like the nose being a little larger for some reason. I’d love for them to continue these with other characters and maybe like you said a fixed set of these to better match the old texture.
Playmates been had articulated Turtles. You can find the single ones at Ross. I got the 2 packs with the turtles and villains last year at Burlington.
Hot take: I don’t like the color matched weapons. White or brown wraps would have looked better I think
Those ankles are terrible. By comparison, the skin texture doesn’t look too bad.

I really don’t understand the change in the skin. I get it’s supposed to be more reptilian but real red-eared sliders have pretty smooth looking skin as-is. Maybe playmates will eventually do another wave with a more normal texture?

Yeah, the ankles are what bothered me about the Mutant Mayhem ones. The rocker ankles on MOTU Origins are perfect, I wish Playmates had done the same. As for the other details, I'm not that bothered, but I'll see how I feel when I get them in hand. Great review!
These look interesting. I could go for these as is, but would be even better with some minor improvements.
I mix my 2012 Turtle Brothers, along with Usagi Yojimbo into my Origins figures.
I actually credit Origins and Turtles of Grayskull reawakening my interest in TMNT figures. Though I have only gotten Shredder and Casey Jones and Man-at-Arms from that line.
Mirage Splinter of course is my default Splinter.

it seems odd to do hips and knees. and no ball joints in the ankle. it seems to negate the pose. Did the elbows have joints? I would rather pay more to have a little more possing. Fun review!

Playmates does a good job at keeping their product on shelves. Hasbro could learn a lesson from them for the Marvel Legends and Black Series.
They look pretty good for the price and for Playmates.
The feet joints are better than no joints.
Rocker ankles would be considerably better, but in a pinch, there'll keep your fig from falling over.

One minor thing I wish they had were orange weapon handles, like the mutant mayhem figures which were referencing the original figures which these are meant to be updated versions of. Also I live in Australia without Walmart so Idk when they will release here

The texture seems to take its inspiration from the Movie Star turtles. My biggest complaint is the skin color: Raph is too pale/mint green compared to the vibrant kelly green of the vintage. And Donatello is too dark chocolate brown compared to the more olive drab vintage color. That’s the deal breaker for me, why can’t they get the vintage colors right? Ankles are crappy too.
