Always look for active lobsters. Tanked lobsters don't get fed and slow down the longer they are in there.
I thought they get fed... If they fed enough it make more heavy = more money when some one buy it...
In ireland if the lobster is in a tank its required by law to feed the lobsters. If not its animal abuse and cruelty.
I done a season fishing Atlantic irish sea lobsters I always had them fish from the sea
@@FHX01 lobsters take an incredibly long time to grow. Many years. The extra feeding will significantly increase nitrogen (ammonia, nitrates) and phosphates in the water, requiring costly filtration or water changes, otherwise face algae or worse: dead lobsters from ammonia toxicity.

@@charlessmith3940 I was told at Lobster Man on Granville Island, Vancouver, that they do not feed them-- or any because of the waste production. They were the ones who taught me to look for active crabs and lobster.

Why are lobster so expensive in the us. Its like cheap anywhere Else there is a shoreline. Easy to catch. And dont really taste much without a lot of seasoning.
Back un 1989 the price of live Maine lobsters dropped radically because of a surplus yearly catch. It went from $18.99 a pound to $6.50 at the local fish store so I took advantage of it and bought three 5 pound plus lobsters and did several all-you-can-eat lobster extravaganzas. Lobster, beer, Cole slaw, French bread, and lots of drawn butter. Life was good! That year I did this a bunch of times.

@Mellie lll I was actually in college and the place I bought them from was called "The Lobster Pond". You could also buy ling cod, pacific cod, sable fish, abalone, wild king salmon, red snapper, monk fish, and a bunch of other fish that haven't been available for years here where I live. Now because I am an old grumpy fisheries biologist, I buy cases of red king crab ($389.99/10 lbs) from Costco all-you-can-eat parties with my friends. The best party of all was the one we had when it was confirmed that trump had lost the election.... a grand party indeed! Five cases.
@@ChrisTian-sd5yq If you like seafood you should buy red king crab or snow crab if you can find it. The Alaskan season for both was canceled because they can't find any crabs to set the quotas. Also the red king crab at Costco came from Russia and we all know what's happening there with exports.

Personally I prefer the meat from lobsters around 2 pounds. I find that lobsters above 2.5 pounds have tougher meat. That was definitely a long time ago.
You forgot to mention, to not give them a nice hot bath after their walk.

As a diver who catches a lot of lobster (eastern mostly) in Sydney and NSW for over 30yrs I can guarantee you putting a limp piece of damp paper over a live lobster will do absolutely nothing to keep it fresh. Once it is out of water it will start to die. Either put it in aerated sea water or keep it cool.
