Direct quote from a Prince song. Guess who it was subliminally directed to? MJ was amazing, but Prince was entirely from another planet/galaxy/universe-- not to mention he was far more musically gifted, unpredictable and versatile than MJ could ever be.
I could care less who sold more record. The ONLY reason MJ was bigger was because he got an 8 yr head start on Prince (with the introduction of the Jackson 5 in 1970) and he was far more kid friendly in terms of his image and lyrics. Prince was the devil's rebuttal to MJ.
Also, Prince has always been more respected by a wider range of actual true musicians. The singers who worship MJ (Usher, Chris Brown ect ect) are more entertainment/spectacle/dance move oriented than creative versatile musician oriented.
There's a reason why Prince was able to tour and put on great shows AFTER his greatest dancing days were behind him---unlike MJ, HE WAS A REAL MUSICIAN who didn't have to rely on dance moves, pyrotechnics and spectacle in order to put on great live show.
Once MJ got older and couldn't move the way he used to, he stopped touring. He was very limited in his skillset. Musician skills will outlast dancing skills. Prince was actually the better dancer due to the fact he did it in HEELS, while Mike did it with comfortable flat loafers.

Phuck YU you hit the nail right on the head. I’m glad someone else in the comments can see the true talent in prince. I’m not taking anything away from Michael and neither are you, but it is clear who is more musically superior. Prince was the embodiment of music. Michael was a great entertainer but I feel as if that blinds everyone’s judgement from who’s really more musically talented. I mean think about it, prince wrote so many hits for other people, imagine if he kept those for himself. Prince loved music and was music, the fame never mattered to him. He did what he loved and it showed. Michael like you said was a people pleaser and kid friendly which is why his music was so popular. Prince style on the other hand actually wasn’t fully accepted at first. He had trouble finding record labels since his music was so unique and different and sometimes even vulgar. But once he debuted, he took everyone by storm. Michael can only dream of having the songwriting and composing ability of prince which is why Michael usually had professional musicians arrange music and compose his ideas for him. I love both of them, but I will always side with the purple one. And if you truly think about it, people always say “prince can’t compare to Michael” but if prince truly didn’t compare to Michael, then why do people do it all the time? my point being is that if prince was not on Michael’s level, they wouldn’t be comparing the two. Therefore people are putting prince on the same platform as Michael and they don’t even know it. There’s a difference between popular people and talented people and most people are blinded by popularity of someone. It happens more often then not sadly. Like I said before, there are many Kings, but there’s only one PRINCE.

It's unfair to compare anyone to MJ. Although both Prince and MJ were talented and beautiful men, nobody could excite the audience as much as Michael Jackson. He was and still *is* the GOAT.

Significant reasons why Prince was better than Michael Jackson. I argue that Prince Minneapolis wunderkind was more musically and culturally significant than the so-called “King of Pop.”Yes, Jackson does reign with the top-selling album (“Thriller,” 32 million copies sold in America) and ranks seventh among artists for all-times sales (79 million. But I like to make the point that sheer sales and global reach don’t tell the whole story. Here’s what I mean: Jackson unleashed the moonwalk and flexed an undeniable gift for a dancer’s rhythm paired with pop melody. But Prince was a multi-instrumentalist tour de force and arguably also the more daring singer. When Jackson wanted rock guitar for “Beat It” he called Eddie Van Halen. But Prince has been acknowledged by Eric Clapton and others as one of the best guitarists of his generation - perhaps the most versatile since Jimi Hendrix. Pop stars tend to rely on hired guns for guitar firepower, like Jackson, but Prince was a one-man army.
In hindsight, the main function of the nearly unwatchable “The Wiz” (sorry) was that it introduced Jackson to Quincy Jones, who would go on to produce his landmark albums “Off the Wall” and “Thriller.” But Jackson never managed a film with the cultural or commercial relevance of “Purple Rain.” (And if you throw the “Thriller” music video in my face, I’ll merely sayI’ll merely say that this argument is a wash when it comes to Prince and Jacko’s MTV presence in the ‘80s.
Speaking of “Purple Rain,” I love the story about how Prince was inspired to write the song by his experience on tour with - of all people - Bob Seger. Prince set out to write a landmark ballad, what essentially became his own “Hey Jude.” Jackson’s “Human Nature” may have its merits, but he never came close to “Purple Rain.
Yes, there was plenty of pride and ego wrapped up in Prince’s rebellion against Warner Bros. Records during which he scrawled “slave” on his cheek, changed his name and even rerecorded “1999” to sell on his own label in time for the new millennium. But the underlying strategy to own his master recordings and control his fate - reaping more profit from fewer record sales along the way - was an inspiration to countless other artists. He stood firm in this streaming era, too. (Alas, no memorial Prince playlists on Spotify.)
Maybe as a symptom of his childhood stardom - too much, too young, and with daddy issues - Jackson never appeared to be comfortable enough in his own skin to serve as a real mentor to other artists. He almost clung to collaborators for moral support. Prince, on the other hand, was more the classic bandleader in developing and promoting talent. And some of his songs became signature hits for other artists (such as Sinead O’Connor's “Nothing Compares 2 U”)
Jackson had that one glove, and the high water pants with the sequin socks, but no other pop star has commandeered an entire color quite like Prince. (Maybe only Johnny “Man in Black” Cash?) The world’s most erotic Jehovah’s Witness also aged more gracefully, to say the least. (I'm trying to play nice and avoid the icky scandalous side of Jacko.)
Having made the mistake of watching “This Is It” in a theater, I’m reasonably sure that we’ve long since seen and heard the best of Jackson’s legacy. But if even a fraction of Prince’s rumored vault recordings exist, we’re likely to see a posthumous outpouring of significant work that will put even the Grateful Dead to shame. Jackson left behind Gary, Indiana, and went in search of his own bizarre Neverland that he tried to build into a (sur)reality in California. But Minneapolis remained a centerpiece of Prince’s career and identity. Concert venue First Avenue and home studio Paisley Park are woven into the Midwest musical fabric. Bob Dylan remains the most musically significant Minnesotan (did I just start another argument?), but Prince was by far the better neighbor. Prince dazzled in 2007 with his Super Bowl halftime performance - still the best among what otherwise has been mostly a revue of past-the-prime relics or Bruno Mars cameos. A great video has circulated online in which Prince eclipses both James Brown (admittedly far beyond his peak) and Jackson during a 1983 concert in Los Angeles. Mic drop. I think I proved my point.
You really cant compare these two and it's unfair to do so. Both were so talented in different ways and I have loved them both since I was a kid. I love the video and the music for it is amazing.
