  • This is a video on the steps I take in making saddlebags, It's a simple design and simple construction which can be assembled by a sewing machine or by leather lacing, I used Latigo 5 oz. leather and sewed it with bonded nylon #207 thread. Make your pattern first out of poster board and then lay it on your leather for less waste. You can adjust the size to your liking.
    Hope you enjoy and Happy Leathering

    I absolutely love it and can't wait to try this. I do more sewing than anything and have really just got into working with leather this past year. Thank you for taking the time to put together such clear instructions.

    Thanks Michael for your comment and for watching. I must confess though it did take longer than 16 minutes to make the saddlebags, you forget the editing time and all the time sewing, cutting, thinking, pattern making and cutting out, error correcting, etc... But it is a fun project and they were easy to make. As far as a finishing video goes, I've thought about it and they're are many out there already. What I've found out is that it's subjective. I may finish very differently that you.

    Glad to know people enjoy my videos. I like to think it's helping new leathercrafters get started and can watch others do leather work. The hardest part starting out is visualizing the completed project without ever seeing someone doing it.
    Thanks for watching and Happy Leathering

    Hey Mike I noticed that too the copper rivets are installed backwards. The male part of rivet should be on inside. Prolly should peen the post too with a hammer. The tool to dome it doesn't work well at all.

    once again you make it look so easy. What you did in 16 minutes would take me hours. Did you get my comment on doing somethine on finishing. Keep the videos coming.

    I would suggest using thicker leather. I recommend 8-9 oz vegetable tanned. I know because not only am I a leathercrafter, but I'm a dayworker too.

    I love your videos and have made a few of the guitar straps. they make great gifts. I notice you use a lot of neatsfoot oil. Is there any reason it can't be applied after dyeing?

    • @RichardBlackII
      @RichardBlackII  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In my opinion you can apply neatsfoot's oil before or after dyeing. I use it a lot for preserving my leather and as an overall conditioner for the leather. Of course, it all depend on the leather, I mostly use it on veg tan leather. Thanks for watching

    I am making a set of saddlebags for my wheelchair. I am using approx. 8-9 oz. leather and they will be hand tooled. My problem is the gusset. I want a folding gusset but I am unsure how to proceed. Can you advise me?

    • @RichardBlackII
      @RichardBlackII  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +The45Gunslinger Good question, I have not made saddlebags with a folding gusset but I have made pleated gussets on my ladies bags.Let me explain the best I can and from my books: It's a simple pocket, made by adding folding allowances to the sides of an otherwise flat pocket to make pleated side gussets. Remember to reduce the thickness of the leather at the base of the pleated area by half before stitching the pocket sides to the bag. Glue the pleats together at the base then stitch the pocket bottom in position.

    Hello Mr. Richard Black I've been watching your videos for a while now and love the saddlebags... but I love the leather poke more than anything else for some reason, I've tried to E-mail you but the address comes back bad, and I don't know if I can reach you by E-mail so I'm commenting on this video to try and get a hold of you. I like the leather poke and wanted to know more about it. Could you please give me an E-mail address that is current, I love your work and would love to know more. Thanks... Morgan T.

      that's not very professional to say that. If you didn't like it or think it was useful you should keep that to yourself. Some of us that are learning thought it was well done.
