Yeah this interviewer really didn’t do his research and it sounded like Goldsmith was losing his patience with the succession of inane questions. I would have loved to talk about Jerry’s own music inspirations.. what music really fascinated him and different techniques.
Jerry was a genius, my favourite score of his is 'The challenge' it is a masterclass in film scoring the odd meters and instruments always keeps you on the edge of your seat, Total recall is good and also the hijacking cue in Air Force One. I think these composers are all gone now except Bruce Broughton. Jerry had so much range as a composer , but hollywood prefer Hans Zimmer and Desplat sounds thesedays.
He didn't mention, of course, that the "Freud" score makes ample use of Bartók's "Music for strings, percussion and celesta". ^^ But never mind, Goldsmith is the greatest.
When you ask a genius an open-ended question, you're not gonna have a good time. Goldsmith must have had to suffer so many fools in Hollywood who didn't understand the depth and nuance of his music.
I hope you get to post the second half sometime. It seemed hard for Jerry to talk about his music and his process in general, let alone to do so regarding single scores. If you really did get to go into detail with him on two scores (and what a two!), you really have something. - David
Great to hear from this genius, for me the finest Film Composer in history.
Jerry is so badass! It would be nice to have a chapter list of such long interview.
Part 2, please! Thank you for this much!
Goldsmith composed Oscar-worthy music for The Swarm(1978) and Inchon(1982). Movie critics hated those films.
Thanks for the upload. Even I didn't liked the interviewer with his vague questions.

Goldsmith was a fairly shy person, who wasn't at ease in interviews unless he knew and trusted the interviewer.
I guess "Survival Run" was the original title of "Damnation Alley".

Is it me or was Jerry giving hints of frustration in the interview or interviewer?
He is pretty abrasive, probably cost him good projects.
