Pursuit of someone you identified for expired tabs what you pulled out of the vehicle with poor reason. Then you investigate yourselves. Just saying that doesn't look very transparent. A non-involved third party should investigate if you want some legitimacy.

It would have been found. CA law states any vehicle operated on, or parked upon public land / roadway with registration expired over six months is an automatic impound. His reg was two years expired. Also he gave a fake DL which was noticed right off the bat. Looks like the deputies already knew who he was, and it wasn’t the person on the ID he gave them. Which is why he was ordered out. But when the vehicle would have been towed, the inventory of the vehicle would have located the weapon. Guy knew he was going to get caught with it so the flight or fight kicked in and he ran.
The truck was going to be impounded, so the deputies would have searched the driver and the immediate are within his reach and found the gun and drugs.
Just another example of what an absolute moron the driver was. It seems to me that at some point during this chase, he could’ve tossed the gun out the window without it being seen therefore reducing his charges considerably. Backing his vehicle towards the police officers open door could have also been considered an attempted murder charge. Simply a moron. Why is it that convicted morons can’t obey simple traffic laws in order to not get pulled over. Having an expired registration or tail light not working is a gift to police while on patrol.
This was a great story... right up to the point where they stated he was NOT struck by gunfire. When you engage the cops in a chase and then back up into them, using your vehicle as a weapon, then you deserve a hail of bullets.

incident could have been handled better by both sides..... escalating a traffic stop over expired tabs to a high speed chase...... having a gun, driving with expired tabs, providing false ID, ramming a Police car when you are a felon..... ALL not to smart of decisions....... that being said, the tabs on my truck are from 2019.......
Most likely the stop was a pretext stop. The deputies wanted to find the guy with a gun or drugs but used the vehicle registration as a reason for the stop to be legal.
