NEXT was PEAK scripted television. When NEXT first started is around when I stopped watching MTV at all and a couple years later, I went no cable entirely. It's literally wild to see how terrible it really was but back then, some people thought "it's on TV so it's gotta be real."
MTV definitely went through a phase where every single show was incredibly fake. Next, Parental Control, Date My Mom, Room Raiders were all so scripted and it’s surprising I didn’t notice as a kid. Pimp My Ride was one of the few shows where the entire show was scripted, but it was still cool to see them work on the car
Back in the day, we'd walk around the club and find the people dancing all crazy and invite then to casting calls for these shows. Producer tells them what to do while screaming, "More energy! More! Louder!" the entire time rolling
