Hi Jen and Winnie, Great video! Always love to see Winnie :) Thanks for sharing many great tips on summer care. One thing we make sure to keep out in the summer for our Yorkie, "Bear", is a plastic child size pool in the backyard. My teenage daughter fills it every morning with cool water. "Bear" loves to go in the little pool, which is about 3 or 4 inches deep. He also loves to play fetch and is so happy when his ball lands in his pool and he has to go get it! :)

Thanks for this video. It was one that I had requested and am happy to see it. I have shaved my Shih Tzu's belly for the summer, too. He had a short cut last year but I've been letting it grow out since the fall. He doesn't like the heat, but it doesn't seem to bother him any more than it did last year. So - don't let all the know it all's that want to tell you to cut her hair get to you. Winnie is gorgeous and obviously well taken care of!
I am interested in a diet video, what you feed, why how ect...... Also maybe a day in the life of Winnie? showcasing her walks, runs and play outside and her routine! Keep up the fab vids!!!
I've been stalking the lululemon site for months hoping that bag comes back! I knew I should've bought it last year! It really is a great bag for dog walking!!!
Awwwwwwwww love the video. Winnie is sooo cute. I have a Cairn X. I use a flannel to wipe him down after walks to get rid of pollen on his coat, paws and around his nose. I use a small organiser messenger bag so it is easy to carry, plus I put a roll of handled sandwich bags in my coat pocket. He has a collar he wears all the time and then a harnass I add during walks and I use a double ended lead to connect to both. The lead can go round the waist and clip back to itself if I need to.
As a photographer, I've always found that most animals don't like looking into a camera, with the exception of birds that love seeing their reflection in the lens. Also, you were facing a bright window. Maybe it bothered her to look out at such a bright sky? Very enjoyable video. Makes me want to get a dog. :-) Winnie lives a better life than a lot of humans do. It's obvious you take stellar care of her.
I love hat you said about 90 degrees lol it gets to 114 degrees here in the summer where im from in the Midwest, this is supper helpful to me as my puppy is only 5 months old now :)

When I walked my doggie Roxy, I had a largish across-the-shoulder bag with all of our nessecities. Besides poop bags, I carried small balls (Roxy was a retrieving freak), a small chuckit thrower which I carried in a "holster" on the bag handle, a rope toy for tug-of-war, a portable water dish for our long walks, cotton balls to wipe her eyes - she always had a "leak" out of one eye or the other and a double length walking leash which I used to walk in parks late at night - she was walked...
My dog loves a fresh drop of water on walks/hikes so i can't go without a waterbottle. I tried a lot of waterbottles, but the best one is H204K9. It's stainless steel, so it's durable & it comes in nice colours. Another thing i sometimes do, i take her Kong and fill it with treats or normal food & yoghurt, put it in the ice box & give it to her frozen (rinse first). Doggy icicle! (^.^)

Roxy was eating Taste of the WIld food too! It's great tasting, easily digested and not a lot goes to waste like with some other foods - her stools were firm and compact. If I get another doggy (a big if...) that's what I'd feed.
I think you and Winnie are both adorable. I just discovered your videos, and coincidentally just rescued a one y/o male tzu, whom I named Gabe...I've never seen such a sweet dog. Hard to believe someone would drop him at a high kill shelter. Anyway, I am enjoying your videos, learning alot about the grooming. Would also like to hear more about training, since yours is so wonderfully trained. Does she sleep in a crate? How do you feel about the large number of vaccines they get these days? Thanks
I have a dog that is half Shih tzu. I shave him a lot more so he can be more comfortable. My vet told us that it would be best not to go on long walks in the summer, due to overheating. An essential for my dog, and should be for your dog, is WATER. If you are going to do these long summer walks, water should be taken. As you know, Shih tzus can be trained quite easy to drink out of a water bottle. Good luck teaching Winnie to drink out of one. ;)
thanks for the video Jen - if i could add to your list of summer essentials it would be sunscreen ( i use one for baby's) on Maximus ( on his belly as i shave him as well) and the tip of his nose - if it's a day at the lake i latter some on all over his coat as well ( dogs can get sunburnt) I also carry with me a fold up dog water bowl ( i have a satchel similar to yours) and it rolls up and fits perfect in my bag - that way i can always give him water ..unlike Winnie he drinks from a dish
I have two dachshunds, and they love I've. We give them ice from our drinks, and they get a doggy bowl of ice whenever we go to the local sno-cone stand.
If you go to pet smart of a pet store you can get chinchillas stone in is just a thick tile and you can put that in Wahin car set and that mite help keep her cool
I have a Malese/ShihTzu mix, for some reason she has very little hair on her tummy area so I often see her laying sprawled out under the table or anywhere on the tiles in the home. When I go into the pool she will follow me and try to get to me though she never jumps in lol but she is calm and swims aroun in the pool if I pick her up and bring her in.My sisters get jealous cause she never follows them at all. Winnie is a cutie by the way, I love how silky and shiny her fur looks.

Request video is Winnies Hair products essentials or what you use for her hair and some tips to have nice and soft hair. I give my dog a bath every sunday. She takes a bath weekly and I think that made her hair dry looking.. I feel like I want to give her a bath every 2 weeks now so she can get away from shampooing, but I just love it whenever she is fresh and clean and smells good. Ideas and tips? :)

Does Winnie use potty pads inside or does she have a yard to use throughout the day also? I have a 10 month old shih tzu and am growing out his coat as well and was just curious how often she uses the bathroom and if 2 opportunities a day is enough for one? Thanks!
Saw one of your videos saying you had purchased a bag bungee for Winnie's carrier for your luggage. I was wondering if you have used it yet as I'm having problems keep my Shih Tzu carrier on my luggage. I was wondering if you could you do a review on it. Thanks :)
I don't what my dog when it gets 90+ either and he has short hair. He is miserable just going out to potty, can't imagine him walking in the heat. Sometimes we'll take him out after the sun has set if the temp has dropped. If he does have to stay outside for an extended period (more than 5 minutes) I use one of those collapsable bowls and fill it with ice and a bit of water so the ice melts into cold water.
A dogs coat works in 2 ways it keeps them warm and keeps them cool.. Dogs dont actually feel any cooler when you take the coat off as they dont sweat so dont get the cooling effect..... If winnies coat is kept clean dry and well brished it will help insulate her and keep her cool:D
Just wondering how do you keep Winnie's paws from getting burned on hot sidewalks? I would love to walk my dog in the summer but the concrete gets too hot for him and burns his pads.

Unfortunately Roxy is no longer with me because she moved to another city. Separate long story there...

Shih Tzu have double coats. The rule is to not cut a double coat dog short. The top coat captures heat and the inner coat insulates them from it. If you cut it short they will be cooler in a cool room and hotter outside in the sun. They also have a tendency to sun burn with shorter hair. There is an exception to toy breeds like this, because their hair takes time to groom properly. If you're not willing to spend an hour a day grooming them you cut them short and keep them inside.

If you took the insulation off of your house would it be cooler in the summer? Not a chance! Cutting the fur off is actually going to make the dog hotter in the summer because there is no protection between your dog and the hot sun. As for cutting a dogs fur, it really depends on what breed you have, as some dogs fur will stop growing while others don't stop
Why don't you cut her hair in the summer? Will it not grow back the same? I would think it would be unbearable to have that long hair and Winnie would probably be happier if she were cooler. But I don't really know about how dog hair grows...are you not supposed to cut it? Sorry that I don't know much about dog grooming, but I was just wondering!
Then please explain why she goes into detail about shaving her belly, the special clippers she bought, cooling pack for the car seat, ect. I find it odd that she shows us her Starbucks essentials....including Truvia. It REALLY irks me when people walk their dogs on HOT pavement. I bet no one would want to walk in their bare feet when it is this hot out. I understand dogs need exercise, but there is a point when enough is enough. This HOT summer weather should be when it is enough.
Why would you not take water on a walk for her? Seems like common sense to me. I have a dog and I do NOT walk him when it is 90+ degrees out. It is not safe. Would you like to walk on hot pavement in your bare feet? I'm not trying to be rude, but you say you love your dog yet you don't take water, leave her hair long, and go on long walks in this horrid heat. I work at an animal shelter, so I do know what I'm talking about. :/

I like to make my dog "pupsicles" too, basically I just freeze chicken or beef broth in a dish and pop it out when it's frozen
