    when charring a functional piece, the hotter your flame the better. a hotter flame will char a very fine layer on the surface faster without giving it the time for the heat to penetrate deeper, causing the wood to become brittle. I would recommend a propane weed burner with high flow for the large application area and fairly high temperature

      How would something like an oxy acetylene or oxy propane rose bud style torch work?

    • @user-fp1hw1yr7x
      @user-fp1hw1yr7x 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      @@plasmahead2 only rose bud torch I know of would be my weed burner, and anything in that style you really don't want oxyacetylene or really anything with added oxygen running through, would probably melt the thing. straight propane in a proper ratio till the flame is so blue it's invisible in the sun is the best way to char wood in my experience. quick, even passes will touch the surface with black but leave the wood cool to the touch within a half second

    For those who don't know hurley is,an ancient Irish war sport. Basically two groups of drunken young men, with no more protection than an athletic cup, gather in tee shirts and shorts on a muddy field. A hard ball, almost exactly like a baseball, is tossed put. Then the two groups try to beat each other to death. It used to end in a ritual where the injured and fatalities were brought back to the home village on rough grids, also called hurdles, covered with brush. This,is called " bringing home the dead". If you will, it's a seriously homicidal version of lacrosse. Both Irish sexes play it. They do this for fun.

      I'm not a woodworker but I used to love making wooden stuff in shop class when I was younger so I get the joy in his eyes from doing this. I actually sketched out and used a jig saw?(I think the hand held one with the long but thin blades)and sander to ready the 3 peices (the heart, the Letter D, & a "kick" stand\wall hang) & then painted a heart with a cut out letter D nailed into the center putting in the heart shaped hole(put in the center with nail put through the inside of the Into the bottom and the side) for my mother for mother's Day when I was 6 years old😊 that's when I first realized I enjoyed woodworking. It wasn't super pretty but it honestly was 100% better then I or my dad, who was helping me not cut my arm off while I tried lol, thought Itd turn out. And it could be set up on a table with a kick stand leg on the back that could also be hung on the wall. Mom said she loved it. And she had it till our house was condemned because of bad contractors or whoever you get to build or add-on to your house, not building foundation of an add-on to the original house which caused black mold all through the foundation and up into the roof till there was roof collapsed in my bedroom and we had to move cause it was killing me and my already dying Father. And she lost it then cause it was ruined by mold in storage without her realizing.

    I remember reading somewhere that they used to char bow staves because it would harden the wood by causing the grain to shrink. I dont know weather I read it it in a fantasy book or a survival book though because i read a lot of both.

    • @brianadams3189
      @brianadams3189 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You don't want to take the wood to the char stage but you do want to cook the belly to a significantly darker color. This project seems more about producing carbon on the outer layers while, with a bow stave, it's about removing moisture, condensing the resins, and hardening the cells in the belly without charring. There is anecdotal evidence that a lightning struck tree naturally goes through a similar hardening process which is why some ancient peoples preferred such trees for harvesting staves.

In 5 minutes I witnessed a dude get blast in the face and another get his shin snapped and play didn't stop. Team mates dragged off their mangled mate, substituted, & continued play. Was gnarly.

  • @FrancisR420
    @FrancisR420 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    If you're looking to char something without going deep paradoxically You might want to go with more intense heat
    You can scroll an oxygen torch across a piece of wood like a pen and leave a thin layer of charcoal without heating the wood.
    You can literally scorch one side of a piece of paper and leave the other side lillywhite with this technique.
    Not sure how you could do that evenly though, You would probably have hatching.

    For my Americans: hurling plays a bit like lacrosse, though the field is 140 to 160 yards long. The ball (called a sliotar) can be hit upwards of 110 mph.
    A player holding the ball is allowed 4 steps (think ultimate frisbee) before bouncing the ball off his hurl, which gains him 4 more. Balancing the ball on the hurl allows you to run as long as you can balance it.
    You can hit the ball from the ground or the air. To pick up the ball, you have to scoop it up with the hurl.
    You probably have a hurling club in your nearest city!

    Never heard of it. To me, Hurley is a brand of sports sunglasses. This hurley item looks to be a combination of several things that I recognize. It's like an ax handle with that large area to like a tennis racket which is to be used like a baseball bat for hit a ball against the wall the same way we Mexicans play handball with those small blue rubber balls. Peculiar, but probably pretty fun if you grew up with it.

    Was in Ireland a few weeks ago(from canada) and learnt about hurling for the first time... brought back 3 sticks and 2 balls... wish this sport was readily available here... it cool to see vids about it after I got to try it out with some locals in galway

    I want a Hurley someday. I forget where, but I remember reading that it’s based on ancient war clubs

    Traditional bow makers will sometimes lightly burn the belly (the side facing the archer) of white wood bows. It apparently increases the compression strength of the wood.

      Not just white wood, it's excellent for many sorts, including yew bows. It's less of a light burn on the belly and more of a slow, deep, penetrating heating(browning is good, charring is bad) in order to reduce intracellular moisture and condense the resin but yeah, it does significantly increase the compression strength.

    Scorching/charing wood can make it tougher under certain circumstances I believe. It definitely makes it more rot resistant because it consumes alot of the sugars in the cells in the surface of the wood making it harder for microbes to live there 😉

    Charring wood makes it a little stronger (depending on the wood)... It also makes the wood last longer in wet weather

    Hotter, more concentrated flame for less time. We do that with a lot of the wood we use for projects, and it was just far too slow. Can’t take too much residual moisture out.
