    No country is hidden so much in modern film and TV as #Cymru / Wales. Our #Welsh imagery is used in everything from James Bond to Harry Potter. From Hitch-Hikers Guide to Highlander. It's played Korea, China and the Congo. It plays England and Scotland regularly. #Wales is always pretending to be somewhere else.
    #WalesintheMovies unpacks this strange national trope and ask 'Does it matter that Cymru is invisible and silent to the outside world?'

    OH MY GOD! I got asked this week 'why Wales?' about my novel. It was suggested that it would have broader appeal if it was more generic.
    I said I wasn't precious about changing it...
    I just became precious! 🤯🤯

    Excellent Nick! Living overseas when I was younger made me realise just how invisible Wales is. When you see all of these examples you've put together here there's no wonder why.

    • @Klaaarke
      @Klaaarke 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      same. I think we all kind of realise, even as young children, that we're the poor relation. But it's not until we go out into the world that we have context for just how and why Wales is invisible. I think given the reality we're raised in i.e. Wales is a country - that being so silent worldwide is unhealthy.

    It’s not just film, it’s everything, we have never pushed ourselves forward like the Irish and the Scots, especially in America, and it’s America where the money is. If someone is going to invest in a “big” film about Wales or Welsh history it will have to resonate with the North American audience and probably have a Hollywood A lister playing the Welsh lead. I don’t have a problem with someone like Brad Pitt playing Glyndwr, but many would, Mel Gibson didn’t do Scotland any harm.

    • @wibbleclarke6784
      @wibbleclarke6784 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Yes and the Welsh were known to be very good at assimilation. Whereas the Irish became Irish Americans, the Welsh just became Americans. On the A-lister point, I totally agree with you. The search for perfection is one of the symptoms of the Welsh disorder, characterising the split personality. It's why so many people who sympathize with the points in this video would still not support a global Welsh hit if it starred an American with an imperfect accent.

    👏🏾I grew up in Wales, left for London nearly 40 years ago and planning to go back home. Hiraeth. What I realised whilst away, is that; it is past time to unapologetically bring to the imagination of the world, the richness and drama of Cymru. An orginial, compelling documentary revealing the hidden spark of Wales and the soulful, bardic gift of its land and people. So glad I came across this documentary. It's lifted my spirit immensely!💫

    Fully agree w/Nick @MoviesWales here. It's a massive curse that we are as invisible to ourselves as we are to others.
    How to address this is super hard though. No English-language broadcaster, no film school, no popular agreenment on national narratives. Tough but essential.
    This is something we should all be looking to address in both (and all) languages spoken here, and across all media.
    Of course, this is just one symptom of Wales’s longstanding issue of semi-autonomy and semi-integration into the British state, its culture and institutions. Much to do.

    This film makes me want to take my camera gear, fly from Vermont to Wales, and create a film called - "Wales: Whether You Like It or Not!" 😡
    Better yet - I'll do a film set in Wales . . . but film it in Vermont!

      I'll film the winter landscape in my country, pass it off as YOUR country, have you record a stirring, poetic narration about the beauty and harshness of the Welsh winter, add appropriate music - and end with the credit "Filmed on location in Vermont, USA."
      Cywydd yr Eira, here we come!
      I'd write more, but I need to rehearse for an Edgar Allan Poe presentation I'm giving this evening - it's his 215th birthday.

    _How Green Was My Valley_ did have one actual Cymro in it, Rhys Williams, but IMDB says "Moviegoers can be forgiven if they thought that [he] was a jovial Irishman", so maybe that's how he slipped through casting.
    Swansea Guildhall has appeared as a Nazi headquarters in Doctor Who (but unfortunately my aunt, who lived across the road, didn't notice).

    Great Video!
    I feel there isn't enough representation of our country in media these days, especially across the pond to those in the US.
    A lot of our scenery and lands are used and disguised as other locations as you mentioned, but there isn't enough captivating our culture and people naturally. It's very rare do I see a movie or a show which truly feels like it's close to home so to speak, and when I do, it's usually cancelled or forgotten about within time ; for example - BBC's "The Tuckers" which was undeservedly short lived :(

    This occurs for one reason and one reason only: to erase the memory of the Britons, now known as Welsh from the world. Show but never tell! Anything that stirs Scottish patriotic sentiment is permitted because British nation hood isn’t dependent on Scotland being in the UK. Whereas Wales being in the Uk is Vital for the UK government to pass themselves of as being Britons. No other situation show this sentiment more than an English Prince pretending to be the “Prince of Wales”

  • @ComeRee
    @ComeRee 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Well said brawd! Being an extra in TV and film - I have been apart of many productions that regularly film out of Cymru: but we never get the nod or appreciation we deserve as the nation we are. I struggle to even be apart of Welsh productions - where its even more of a struggle to find a movie/program that is actually about Cymru!
    Though, when we've been trained for years to be self-conscious and filled with self-doubt, is it any wonder we lack the confidence to simply say: enough is enough?
    When we don't even have media powers devovled to our nation [yet] - it literally prevents us truly funding such things [or people like yourself helping bring awareness to our plight].
    Cadw i fyny'r waith dda brawd! Keep up the good work brother!

      Yeah like it says in the video, it's great tp have productions here but after decades of that, Welsh people still go overseas and see blank expressions when we say where we;re from. It's not healthy for confidence nd self-resepct. Needs fixing.

    Fascinating topic! I am wondering if anyone has any examples where Wales is mentioned. I have Human Traffic as my #1 that comes to mind. Recently watched Wolf Alice: On the Road and they have shots of crossing the Menai to Ireland. I remember they had text cards for most places, but due to them not stopping to play in Bangor or anything I don't believe it had any declaration of location.
