Even though it’s difficult I keep faith because I know God will change my situation. I trust in you Father and keep faith even as I struggle to take care of my children. I’m so ashamed. The past two years have been hard on me. I’m a single mom. I suffered an heart attack and I’m battling lupus. Both of my sons are autistic and to be honest Heavenly Father I’m so overwhelmed. I’m constantly struggling financially to buy groceries and struggling to pay my rent and now that I’m home schooling my sons I’m struggling to buy their school supplies. I want to give up. But even in hard times I know I must choose to have faith. No matter our struggle, we can turn to God. He knows us personally and can give us strength to overcome our challenges. I Trust in YOU LORD PLEASE HEAR MY PRAYERS!

I'm glad this topic was discussed. I used to be a street magician and that lead me to study magical theory and how it relates to perception. I have a few thoughts I would like to share:
    1. This was touched on but it's worth stating more clearly: magical performance is like acting in a movie. While you're watching it you suspend disbelief and engage in it as though it were real. The sin in "magic" is in either deceiving people as to what is really going on or engaging in actual ungodly spiritual practice.
    2. Sean kept going back to blind spots; in terms of magic/illusion we have the main one that Joshua mentioned is attention. The movie Catch Me If You Can is all about this. Another is speed (the hand is quicker than the eye). Another is actual line of sight. If you can see the card in the magician's palm, then to your brain it simply doesn't exist.
But in terms of how this translates to life more broadly, I think a huge one is again, attention. Christian life is all about keeping our eyes on Jesus and not the waters beneath us. The modern world is all about distraction and that's the key takeaway. This also works on a purely mental level too. We're surrounded by signage and lights etc and we just take it all for granted. Same with advertisement; even when you're not aware of it, stimuli get lodged into your brain and can have an effect and create cognitive biases. Every presupposition we have should be interrogated.
    3. In having studied magic in a performance sense, and the occult (both academically and unfortunately personally when I was separated from the Church) I can see how little understanding there can be among Christians about these two forms of "magic." Secularism and Occultism are two realms through which the Enemy attacks God's children and both need to be understood and resisted. Unfortunately, the word "magic" is an area where these two realms intersect and a sort of bait and switch can occur. People will get into horoscopes or tarot from a secular mindset and take it as a very superficial thing. For most non-believers it never goes past this and they openly mock anyone who "actually believes in that stuff."
But to the more spiritually minded, these are doorways to a secret world that promises to solve their hardships in life and answer their questions. And the worst part is it can offer a lot to people who are searching for meaning. A person can see new wonders in creation, and find hope and community and even better themselves in some areas. But it's always at a cost. And the debt isn't collected on until a person has gone very far down that rabbit hole. This is why how we live as the Church matters. The cunning of apologetics is needed to defeat the subtle arguments of the Occult. The beauty of our worship is needed to outshine the aesthetics of esoteric traditions. And our communities need to be more loving and less condemning (only God is the judge of a person's heart).
For that last point, I am NOT saying to be "affirming" or soft on peoples "identities" or "lifestyles." But Jesus who was God himself, seemed able to maintain relationships with prostitutes and the like. Too many people run away from the Church because they feel hated and attacked.
Thanks again for this excellent video! God bless all of you!

As far as his profession goes, I would think most if not everyone going to see a magician perform knows it’s all illusionary and knows there being “deceived” in a way which means it would cancel the deception itself out completely. The only time I would say that magic is a sin is when it’s done spiritually, as in witchcraft with performative magic (mostly) is not that in the slightest. Just a ‘slight of hand’ performance

There's an interesting point in JP Moreland's book on miracles that I'm reading where he talks about Jesus' miracles. He used to think the miracles proved Jesus was God because he was doing them from his divine nature. But he now believes Jesus was performing them from his human nature in total dependence of a filling from the spirit. (And that view doesn't compromise his divinity)
It's interesting. I mean the apostles and other Christians were then doing the same types of miracles - even raising from the dead.
So, is there anything even remarkable about Jesus miracles (I mean in relation to other miracles performed by other Christians with the spirit, I'm not suggesting there's nothing remarkable happening!)?

I'd be interested to know how Joshua would categorise a "Mentalist"? We have a well-known guy in Ireland who's very popular, and, from what I've seen, I would have concerns that he uses hypnotism and possibly psychic powers at the very least. Have you heard of them and if so, what would be your take on this? Thanks! 🙏🏼

    • @joshuang6896
      @joshuang6896 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Hi there. I am Joshua, the guest in Sean's video. Thank you for your question!
Mentalism is a subcategory of the magical performance arts. It is characterized by a performer apparently being able to obtain inaccessible information from his subjects. In fact, the showpiece that I did in the beginning with Dr. Rae, where I apparently read his mind, could be considered mentalism. Without exposing the methods that mentalists use, most of us have secular explanations as to how we get to know certain information. Mentalists rely on certain human tendencies and knowledge to achieve these effects. Funnily enough, Holly Pivec and Doug Geivett in their book "Counterfeit Kingdom" cited how NAR "apostles" and mentalists both use the same technique to apparently "divine" the scenario of an individual. This is not to say that all apparently supernatural events could have a secular explanation, but sometimes that is more probable than others.
In terms of hypnotism, I have once watched an instructional video on how to do it by a Canadian mentalist called Spidy who does this really well and tours all-across Canada and the United States doing this. As I understood it, the method is secular and it captalizes on certain natural human tendencies to do so. But most people do not realize how much a hypnosis show actually takes in order for a mentalist to successfully hypnotize his participants. From my understanding of things, it takes on average of 20-25 minutes from the moment the mentalist calls people on stage to the moment they are hypnotized. But capitalizing on something I call "The Show-Business Effect", the audience only remembered the most emotionally memorable moment, which is the fact that the mentalist hypnotized people. This adds to the "telephone game" effect, that people only tell others the memorable moment without the unmemorable details.

@joshuang6896 thank you so much for such a comprehensive, thoughtful and detailed reply - that's very helpful, especially when I'm sure you're extremely busy.
I'm going to come back to this comment and re-read - I feel I have more questions, but I totally accept and understand if you're too busy to answer more.
However, the impression I'm getting is that you're saying most of the skill is being well-acquainted with patterns of human behaviour and using that to portray an illusion.
I certainly feel happier with that idea 🙂
I'm pretty sure I've also seen a British mentalist - Derren Brown, conduct what i think he described as a mass séance (??) in the basement of the Royal Albert Hall (edit: apparently very haunted), with multiple groups being around different tables, which began moving (it looked more like the movement of Ouija Boards). Some of the things I've seen him do, do seem to be like black magic, but maybe it's just *very* clever illusion, too.
      Thanks again, Joshua! 🙏🏼🙏🏼

It's a combination of illusion, slight-of-hand, attention control and suggestion/ influencing, showmanship and, yes, a bit of trickery (like clever editing of video). A lot of what Derren does relies on psychological research into how we are influenced - a great book that everyone should read is Robert Cialindi, "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion".

Magic and sorcery are much the same, both of which have to do with a person evoking demonic power for his own purposes. The same can be said of religionisrs who rely on the anointing of religious spirits to empower their preaching. The Philippian girl of Acts chapter sixteen is an example of how it plays out. Everything she said was 100% correct and was 100% the truth, but it was a religious spirit speaking through her. And so it is with all of these TH-cam religionists (people like these three guys running their mouths in this video). None of the TH-cam religionists have an anointing of the Holy Spirit, so if they want to stay in the limelight they're pretty much forced to rely on the empowerment of religious spirits.
In case you don't already know, the religious spirits are the highest echelon of warrior/foot-soldier demons in the kingdom of darkness hierarchy who are meticulously groomed by the kingdom of darkness overlords (aka principalities/ fallen angels per Ephesians 6:12 in the King James Version) to know how to mimic the Holy Spirit when necessary (some of them can be very convincing), which is done mostly through human mouthpieces operating in soul power and presumption "Who have said, with our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?" Psalm 12:4 (and accompanied by their posture of perfection).
And conversely, the religious spirits also know how to oppose the Holy Spirit when necessary, which is done mostly in church meetings by the man-at-the-top (so-called "Pastor"), and/or by the church matriarch who is usually his wife (but not always... sometimes it is a bold Jezebel character who may actually have control over the pastor and the congregation), and especially by music ministers.
TH-cam was concocted by the kingdom of darkness overlords (aka principalities/ fallen angels) to be propped up as a forum for religious spirits to speak through hand-picked human mouthpieces in order to acclimate Christians to soul power ministry that is energized by religious spirits. And it is working famously well for them. Only an outpouring of the Holy Spirit can interrupt it. With that in mind I think we should all be praying and asking the Lord to please send the end-time outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
