If you get around to this question, it'd be great, if not I understand. We bought a Tulip tree from a local (central IL) in the late summer of 2022. It was approximately 13 ft tall and the first disappointment was that the nursery didn't wrap it. They loaded it in the back of my pickup and the trip home was only about 3 miles and we drove real slow and it still got slapped around by the current. (We wrapped it with a tarp and...sigh...it was kind of a mess). Well, we cut off one or two fairly big limbs that obviously were dying or dead but it had a good 2023. The issue: it came with a flat area located about several inches up from the ground, running maybe 12". It showed a crack last summer so in the fall i had an arborist inspect it. He's looked at our trees before and he's got about 40 years of experience. He said it had been damaged by frost at some point but he said it was no big deal, it would be fine. Well, this spring it's weeping and it's pretty soft. I'm having a different arborist look at it soon, but my gut tells me this is NOT good. Do you have any comments on this? I'd love input.
Hey, thanks for asking the question. We are happy to help give advice. Regarding the wrapping - normally trees only need wrapping from windburn if they are going several miles. 3 miles at slower speeds is not enough to cause any large amount of damage to a tree. That being said, if customers request that we wrap a tree, we will do it no problem. Regarding dieback - it is not uncommon for new trees to have some dieback, especially tuliptrees. It is a good sign that the tree did not lose much during 2023. Regarding the flat area - I am unsure exactly what you mean by a flat area. If it is a soft spot on the tree, that is not necessarily a good sign. If it is a flat area on the trunk, and it is hard, that is generally fine. Frost cracks are something we try to avoid by wrapping trees with paper tree wrap in the fall. I recommend doing this for your tree until it is about 3-4 inches in diameter. My advice would be to reach out to either a local arborist or to the nursery who sold it to you, and get their opinion on it.

@@lighthope3519 Sorry about that, I misunderstood the question. We currently have about 20, 30" wide 'green velvet' boxwoods being dug this year. Those are the largest we will be stocking the sales yard with. You are more than welcome to stop by and view them in mid-April when they are out in the sales yard. If you would like boxwoods larger than 30" wide, we will need to try and special order them for you. If you would like to do that, please email sales@wasconursery.com with the exact count and preferred size that you would like and I can try and locate them for you.

Dutch Elm hit in the 70s and 80s too. In Central Illinois. Very sad as my parents had 2.

Beech trees are my favorite and they’re all dying now.
