Under the Heavens | Writing Session

  • While filming for more studio tour stuff, the guys captured me playing through some of my new songs. Under the Heavens emerged from this writing session in real time - we didn't plan any of this.
    My favorite things to watch are documentaries on how things are made, and I'm always looking on TH-cam for behind the scenes of the artists that inspire me because I want to know how people work and what they're like, so I thought putting this out might be fun. It's honest, raw and identical to how I think and talk to myself when nobody is there watching. None of the audio is time or pitch corrected in any way. What you hear is what we captured while filming.
    I wouldn't call this an episode as much as it's a look inside my writing process, and Under the Heavens just happened to emerge from it.
    Speaking of which, Under the Heavens is out now on all streaming platforms: fanlink.to/tonyanderson
    I might have the second studio tour film done in May. But maybe not. I've had some requests to finish the tour after releasing the first one, but I'd rather spend my time writing music than being part of making any more films (on most days!) - if you're a filmmaker you know what I mean. It's 100x the effort compared to music. The team and I are talking about what to do next, but please be patient. Enjoy this little short film in the mean time...or don't...

    I also enjoy figuring out, and watching documentaries on how things are made, so I can’t resist watching these 😊 And what I find so captivating about your process and your person comes from the music you make. Your music is such excellent artistry because the music taps into a peaceful feeling that I can only get fromquite quiet places in nature that have no manmade sounds. Such as standing in a deep dark night and looking up at the stars, or lying under big trees, looking up at the skies through a green canopy whilst listening to the rustle of the leaves.
    It is strange how artists often hold keys that unlock spaces in our minds, that we do not know how to acess ourselves.
    It isn't easy to put into words, and may sound silly, but I wanted to express my gratefulness.
    So thank you, maker of exquisite music. Your music makes my life better, and also help me study by keeping me calm when hundreds of pages of advanced physiology is stressing me out >

  • @cjthomasmusic
    @cjthomasmusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Man, if the piano mic'ing video won't be out in the next 12 years, I'd seriously pay just to have a Zoom call and nerd out on mic techniques with you. Such a nice sound you've got there. I'm getting close to what I'm looking for but still not there. And that's with 5 mics on my piano.

    • @TonyAndersonMusic
      @TonyAndersonMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It’s more about how you EQ each individual mic position to begin with. Remove that’s unnecessary from each microphone recording and keep the best parts. Then you can focus on making a stereo mix of all the mics together. I print mine through varying tube EQs and channel strips to remove midrange buildup and enhance brightness and low end. It’s both of those working together

    • @cjthomasmusic
      @cjthomasmusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TonyAndersonMusic Ah that's super helpful. I've mostly been doing my EQ on the piano bus as a whole. Typically, it's either too bright with more piano noise than I'd like (from boosting everything), or too muddy. I'll have to play with EQ'ing each mic signal. I've been hesitant because I try not to overdo it and do more harm than good. Something I can do easily.

    • @TonyAndersonMusic
      @TonyAndersonMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@cjthomasmusic oh yeah. Purists don’t like to EQ their mic positions… I know some people who don’t use equalizers at all because they believe that signifies poor mic placement… In my opinion, I like to use the tools at my disposal. Only thing to be careful of is to make sure you aren’t using any high pass filtering on your individual mic positions unless it’s absolutely necessary… If you have a stereo pair of the same microphone, I would avoid doing any low cutting… I use my master piano bus to do low-cuts. And even then, I wait till I’m mixing the entire song to do so with my piano stems. I turn on natural phase mode in the Pro Q3 (instead of zero latency mode) when mixing my songs to do all high pass filtering.

    • @cjthomasmusic

      @@TonyAndersonMusic Following up to thank you for the advice! Here's a video I just shared employing some of these techniques. Although I still have a ways to go. th-cam.com/video/eCOTHRkGEO4/w-d-xo.html

    • @DanielBastionMusic
      @DanielBastionMusic ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TonyAndersonMusic I've been following your piano mic techniques and just got a beautiful Yamaha U3A and have been micing with dual Coles 4038 (thank god for izotope rx denoise), dual sE8s and a Mojave 201 centered. I have been FIGHTING midrange buildup so much and tryin to hard to get a sweeter sound purely off mic placement but it is SUCH a challenge unless the piano just naturally sounds like that. It's been such a headache for me I started to believe maybe my piano just isn't right (though it sounds good to my ear)
      Then I read this comment today and realized it does need EQ and I feel *relieved*. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this info. If you ever did a recording/eq/mixing video on your piano I would empty my bank account to pay you : ))))) Or if not that's cool too but just please making music so I can swim in that beautiful piano tone and reverb tail.

    I just listened to this on Spotify for the first time and closed my eyes.
    I saw myself on a huge field of flowers, wearing a summery long dress and my hair down. Me and my love, happy, as we throw our son into the air and play. Laying on a picnic blanket, my son asleep with his head on my lap, and my husband next to me, whispering words of love while gently touching my belly, where my second son is.
    Not pregnant right now but this is what I saw when I closed my eyes. It was wonderful and hopeful. Thank you brother for writing this.
    I can sense like a different tone to this song. Nuit I absolutely loved, and still adore and I still belong to the 0.5% that listen to your songs most on Spotify😜
    But Nuit was different from this. To me at least, I felt sadness or maybe even confusion in Nuit, feeling distant to someone, or even a bit lost on the way. And still before any song endet you still perfected it with such melodies of hope. Its like you were struggling with something but never had complete hopelessness. Its like you always knew there is light at the the end of the tunnel. You never gave up. And I guess thats the hope that we carry when we carry the light in us, bc God is light and we as his children will struggle but never lose hope. Under the heavens I feel like comes across as if you are over the hill with whatever was causing u difficulty. Its so much lighter and airier in „texture“ (haha can I say that for music??). It made me dream of my future. You are talented. As always. Forgive me if I have offended you with anything here or made wrong assumptions. Im just writing what Came across to me, I might be wrong. But that’s the beauty of music, there is room for interpretation. I love you brother. Always love to hear from you. 💙💙💙

    Ok, TH-cam turned me on to your music man! I came home today after listening to this song and sifted through this video until I figured out how to play it! Really love your music man, you are an inspiration to me. One day soon, I hope to make music just as good.

    Lo admiro mucho.
    Es genial cómo crea música solo tocando algunas notas y cómo poco a poco le agrega efectos y más notas hasta crear una melodía simplemente majestuosa.
