Brian, nailed it! Metroid will NEED to be on both switches due to the cost it accrued over such a long time in production. Starting over on a game adds tremendous cost overall.
Brian nailed it in response to the "Nintendo can't innovate anymore" takes. People forgot or never knew Nintendo's history before the Wii. And Nintendo still does weird stuff like Labo, Ring Fit, and Alarmo anyway.
Will Switch 1 games get a boost?? Depends how the game was coded. Dynamic resolution scaling exists in a lot of Switch 1 games to maintain steady frame rates. Lots of games are targeting 30 or 60 FPS & missing that target cause of resources & some cap the framerates. We've seen with overclocked Switch systems that there were some performance boosts & games ran smoother. Think those games will definitely run better on Switch 2. Others, there would have to be patches & updates to allow for it. Upgrading from 30 to 60 FPS or increasing resolution is very different.
It should be noted that the Switch 1 released in the middle of its demo tour, so a release on a day like May 22nd wouldn't be THAT unheard of. With that said, the Friday dates are likely gonna be wrong since Nintendo moved their release day to Thursdays as of the start of this fiscal year.
Yeah like if they are locked like Paper Mario Nintendo might not feel a need to unlock it but if it's already unlocked... Like Echoes and Brothership were probably made with Switch 2 in mind (or it was just a Unity 5 stipulation, I've heard that is an issue).
It's been 20yrs since I could deal with playing handhelds. Even the Original Switch I can't play it more than a few minutes in handheld mode. I'll only do it to open a game to scan in Amiibo's but not actually play a game, for that it's docked. Now if they could hook it up to a 10" Tablet as a monitor, then I could use it. If they made a lower cost Switch 2 w/o handheld mode, I'd buy that.
I'm with Brian, 350 is the sweet spot for getting the masses on board. The other models can drop instantly in price, no reason to follow tradition. One can even be taken off the market or a revised model made. Plus now we have Switch Lite owners that might not want to wait for the next Lite. Tariffs are the wild card, but look at the Wii and DS along with OG Switch; affordability hugely correlates with success for Nintendo as the core fanbase might be as few as 20mil.
Definitely a lot more comfortable than 2 hands on a controller. People really need to try it out at least once before writing it off. Having a joy on on each hand allows you to just relax your arms to the side.
If the frame rates are already unlocked, OG games should run at peak on Switch 2. Plus if there is dynamic software upscaling surely that can automatically boost the games without much/any patching, or is that impossible?
Your first bit is 100% correct, assuming Nintendo didn't have to do some real voodoo magic to get the Switch 1 software running on the new system that puts limits on stuff, stuff like BotW or ToTK will get improvements simply because there is more hardware overhead now. The upscaling is less likely, that stuff generally needs to be built into the game. There is software that does general upscaling but it's more upscaling the image and not adding in more frames like a DLSS
@CyberZero232 yeah so I mean upscaling just the image as an end process type as opposed to DLSS, but yeah frame gen sounds unlikely in any case. Even if they bake it into new games, the cap is probably 60 and I've heard the input feels slow with single frame gen from a base of 30. I did wonder if they might magic up a frame gen for every third frame to set input at 40 but it sounds convoluted, it's technically possible though.
If any of these Switch 1 games with stuttery uncapped frame rates are playable on Switch 2, I guarantee they will smooth out. The whole point of the uncapping is to futureproof these games, despite what Digital Foundary thinks.
They aren't uncapped, pretty much all of the games with performance issues do have capped framerates. A capped framerate doesn't prevent stutters, or framerate drops. It prevents a game from going over a specific framerate. A cap is a maximum, not a minimum. The games will 100% perform more consistently, but they aren't going to magically go over, the capped 30 or 60 fps they are designed for.
I'm not too worried about the size. I think others have said this, but grade-school-age kids lug their tablets around everywhere, and those are awkward and clunky in size and weight compared to the Switch. Plus, kids can either just rest their hands and the console on their laps or use the kickstand--I imagine the number of situations where they can *only* play it while holding it up in the air are fewer than not.
Complete nonsense. Tariffs are used to equalise trade deficits, protect local industries, or even punish countries. No way would Japan receive any, much less on electronic goods. Rebecca is just being political. Interesting that no one is whinging about American tariffs on China currently, or even those by other countries on American exports.
Logan says you can’t just push the Echoes of Wisdom run better button, but the new hardware will almost definitely run it better, look at PS4 games with performance problems (Bloodborne) that run at closer to locked fps on PS5, with no patch in sight. That’s how the Switch 2 will most likely work.
The base hardware power of Switch 2 will smooth out the framerate of underperforming original Switch games that aren’t hitting the target fps, but I bet Switch games will run in “docked mode” automatically no matter if the Switch 2 is in handheld or docked, meaning fairly locked frame rates and fairly high resolution for the (rumored) 1080p handheld mode, especially since dynamic res won’t kick in as often on games that support it.
I will be shocked if Nintendo doesn't charge $500 for the Switch 2. There's no reason to sell hardware at a loss anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if they continue to sell NS1 games digitally for ages too for people who don't care about performance either. OLED screen? Price goes up. Big SSD for faster load times and how NS2 games will take up more space? Price goes up.
They’re not holding the iPads up with two hands for extended periods of time in the way they do for a console though. But I’m with Reb on this, the more pressing concern for younger players is going to be the weight of the device.
Did the chick with the braids and blue shirt just get out of prison? She always mean mugging and looking like she wants to fight somebody. Calm down? We’re talking about video games here 😅

I mean, the reveal WAS underwhelming. It's not the we knew everything, it's that they literally said almost nothing. They showed that it's black, different textured, bigger and called the Switch 2. That's it....
It's called a first look, meaning stay tuned and "get excited to find out why you should buy it" besides the clear implications of "exclusive games". No one who follows leaks has any reasonable basis for complaint.
It’s the answer to hold control over the leaks and have something to talk about at next investors meeting. It was just a tease. Looking forward to April 2nd

It will be on Switch 2 automatically... cuz it's backwards compatible.

I agree definitely, but my poor old day one switch sensors are struggling and always disconnect when I try to play that way nowadays

My guess - June 4th for the Switch 2 release, and the new SMB title dropping Sept 11th. 🍄

May 16. The two later dates are territories where the Switch 1 released later than Mar 17
Thanks Reb for bringing up reality. The tariffs will damage the Switch 2 in the US, and Nintendo generally.
The tariffs will damage the US, generally. But that seems to be the entire driving force of the new administration 😅

399.99 is not too high if the specs justify it. That would still put it at a far more affordable price than a Steamdeck or a Rog Ally.

This Dillon remains happy
At most they will have one box with both the Switch and Switch 2 logos on certain games, as per one of Nintendo Forecast's thoughts.
Crystal Chronicles deep cut.
Switch oled gets fazed out. Switch lite at $149, Red Box at $249, and Switch 2 at $399
Just my prediction
