I took my grandmother & her sewing skills for granted. She passed before I was interested in sewing. I just wanna thank you for teaching me how to use my new machine.❤
Same with me. I have adhd so sitting and learning with her was hard but I really wanted to but then once my dad passed I was too depressed to learn. I am almost 40 and learning now. Never too late.
Hello. Out of necessity I recently purchased the Brother LX3817, because of my daughter-in-laws recommendation. Had never used a machine before. However, after 2 months I find it really easy to use for my sewing projects, and I have learned so much about other types of machines and sewing. Turns out the learning process is not as difficult, as I thought it would be. I have begun to look forward to using my little investment (almost) everyday. Only thing is I need to purchase some new material and a few extra needles. I have had a lot of fun learning a new skill at my age. Thank you so much for this video.
@@mandycarter7094 You're very welcome. Actually, maybe you're ready for 100 bulk needle orders since sewing almost every day getting needles in bulk of 100 needles is very economical coming to 13 cents to 28 cents per needle. 100 of the same kind of needle sounds like a lot but if sewing every day and changing the needle after 5 hours of sewing goes through a lot of needles. In fact, even after just a few minutes of sewing through a Velcro patch, I change that needle (put it in the throw out needle/pin container). After a thread jam, change that needle even if it has just been put in. No headaches about changing needles often when not thinking about pitching a $1 or even 50 cents needle. This site has free shipping on Organ bulk needles at super prices for a variety of needle types. Be sure to click on Household Machine Needles (the ones with flat backs) My favorite brand is Organ Needles (like Brother, Janome and Juki sewing machine use). Important to Note: Brother LX 3817 and it's similar models (just different face colors) can NOT use a size 18 needle. Size 16 is the largest size it's engineered to use. Using a size 18 will cause stitch problems that mimic tension issues. ctsusa.com FREE shipping on bulk needle orders.
@@hummingbirdlady11 I am so thankful for you right now! You have given me more information about needles than the instructions paper work that came with my machine...hahahahaha! Thank you.
@@mandycarter7094 Thank you. I sure appreciate your comments. : ) As you become a wise sewing machine guru, pass on the info. LOL Although I don't have the Aqua LX3817A, I think the manual is the same as for my LX3817 (white with blue paisley). There's a Fabric, Thread and Needle Combinations chart on page 22. The largest size needle on that chart is a size 100/16 (100 is the European metric size # and 16 is the American size #). Since size 110/18 is omitted then that means it can not be used in this model sewing machine.
Practice on your machine like you would practice learning how to ride a bicycle. Your machine is simply a tool that helps you make new things and like every tool, a person learns how to best use it by taking their time 😊 You can even learn how it works on the inside and perhaps how to keep it clean and running well.
I have had this sitting in the box for 4 months. When I opened it and scan through the manual I got overwhelmed, so I googled for an instructive video and yours popped up. I'm so glad because your video is easy to follow, with clear instructions and helpful tips. Rather then spend hours reading the manual, you got me started and ready to go in 20 minutes!! I bought this sewing machine yesterday at Walmart . I was so surprised, It was the only one on the shelf! I had been wanting one for a while now. The last time I used one was in middle school.😊 I can’t wait to get started with mine! I would love to see how you sew face masks . Thank You for this video! 💕
I can't thank enough for the little tutorial instructional video!!! I just purchased the brother 3817 at Walmart. I have not sewn in years and this was such a great reminder video to get my sewing adventures started back up!! 🪡🧵📍👏👏👏 Thank you sooo much!!!! 🙏
This was the Best and easy to follow instruction. My first time ever working with a sweing machine and I did it all the way to a straight stich with you. THANK YOU! 🙏
Absolutely BRILLIANT! Just bought this machine last week and have hemmed jeans and slacks. Learned from your vid, there is a DVD and a thread-cutter already on the machine, BRILLIANT! Thank you SOOOOOO much.
I just got a dress for a wedding and I want it to go from cap sleeves to long sleeves and I’m getting a sewing machine tomorrow so this helps so much lol
I just purchased this machine. It has been about 45 years since I have sewn. I appreciate the refresher course. After I get it out of the box, I'll probably be back with some questions. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much this was so helpful my mom got one of these for Christmas & needed help getting started but with the help of this video she was sewing in no time!
You made this so easy i followed along and felt so comfortable i started calling you auntie by the end of the video. lol. 💓 Be Blessed Auntie you're a life saver🤗
ive watched this video about 2 or 3 times since i bought my machine two weeks ago, just started my first big project and came back to wind bobbin. love your style of speaking it makes me feel as if you’re teaching me personally, thank you!
The absolute best memories I had with my mother was when she would sew the most beautiful outfits for me. I would buy an outfits from the mall and she would recreate it to a much higher quality and then I would get my money back. I wish I had asked her to teacher me, but I was only her mannequin😂 I bought a sewing machine around 1992-93 and the front-loading bobbin kept jamming up. I only made a vest and then a co-worker asked if she could borrow it, and I never saw my machine again. Now 30 years later I'm about to buy this machine from Walmart for only just $88.
Thank you for this video!! I've not used a sewing machine in years. Always had grandma or mom around to help remind me of the steps. Definitely started coming back to me as I went through the steps. Much appreciated!
I’ve had this exact machine in my closet since November. I got it for my birthday but have been too intimidated to even watch the included video, lol. You made it seem easy though. I’m going to watch the video real quick and then follow yours as I begin. Thank you. As far as ideas...I always wanted to make covers for my decorative square pillows. The kind of covers without zippers but just a folded over opening on the back that you slide your pillow into. (Apologies if you’ve already done a video on this, it’s my first time visiting.)
My daughter have been taking sewing lessons for the last 3 months from a friend of mine. She got really into it & I bought her this brand sewing machine for her b-day. She was really excited and can't wait to get started. Thank you for doing a great step by step instruction for this machine.
Going to my first sewing group this morning. I've only done one project on my brother machine. Thanks for the wonderful video, very informative. And your accent is just darling.
Thank you for this video. My daughter received this machine as a gift last week and I haven't operated a sewing machine for many many years. I think your videos will be extremely helpful to both of us! ♡
My daughter is trying to learn how to use this sewing machine and your videos is helping her really out she's only just 10 and I'm think she's getting better at it now thank you very much thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you
You are so welcome! I know you will enjoy sewing on your new machine! I made another video showing how to make a cute little quilt if you're looking for a beginner project :) th-cam.com/video/5NnouujpNlM/w-d-xo.html
I just purchased this Brother LX3817 from Walmart a few days ago. I was shocked when I opened the box. There was no paperwork what so ever. No manual, no manufacture warranty information, no nothing. All that was in the box was the sewing machine it's self. That's it. My first thought was, This must be a return that was placed back on the shelf. I was getting ready to return this to Walmart. Then, I decided to try it out to see if it works. I learned this is a fantastic machine for the price. Works great!. I'm Still in shock with the question, where is the manual and all the extra that was supposed to come with it? How many ran into this issue?
You helped me so much. It was like my own mom teaching me. I'm a southern girl myself so you having that accent also made me feel at home lol Thanks so much for this video! Can't wait to start making things!
This is really useful video Thank you My question is I have same machine but my stitches are not coming properly it’s stitches for little bit again it’s not And my niddle is not picking up bobbing thread Can you please help
I just want to thank you so much!! I bought my sewing machine nearly 4 years ago. I tried to sew on it and never could fully figure it out. Watching your video has helped me out so much! I am no longer discouraged by sewing! Thank you!
One thing at the end that you did, but didn't mention it is you quickly turned the take up lever all the way up before you resumed sewing the second stitch. I know that on my Brother (different model) if I don't do that whenever starting to sew again, it breaks the thread and I have to start over. When I first started sewing, no one could tell me why my thread was breaking every time I restarted after cutting thread and somehow I figured it out. I even took the machine into a sewing repair shop and they couldn't tell me, probably because it's considered so basic that everyone is supposed to know it, but I didn't, so you might point that out. The other thing I have to do is push both upper and lower threads towards the rear of my machine when I restart or the thread breaks or piles up.
My husband got me this machine Christmas 2018 and I've been afraid to touch it. My mom was a seamstress and although she'd let me play, she never let me really work with it. She passed in 2008, leaving me an unfinished baby blanket that was intended for someone else. I'd love to finish it and use it for our baby girl born this past November. Hopefully with your guidance I'll get this project completed! Thanks Mom 💜
I think finishing that blanket would be awesome! The machine is your friend lol! No need to fear it :) I made another video about a quilt that may have some helpful info in it, otherwise don't hesitate to ask any questions here :) th-cam.com/video/5NnouujpNlM/w-d-xo.html
Obtain material like that used to make the baby blanket and practice on it. Make all your mistakes on an unimportant piece of teaching material before you move on to the important blanket. Mom's ideas are helpful, and also see TH-camr Evelyn Wood (who looks a bit like an Australian Snow White but does a lot of sewing and teaching). Wait to tackle that important project until after you are confident with your machine :)
I have 3 machines. 1924 treadle Singer with all the attachments and book, works great. 1962 Emdeko Delux with full cabinet that I have been using for over 40 years and now my Mother gave me this LX3817 She's 92 and decided she would just let me sew anything she needed. I was a little perplexed to start but your video made it a cakewalk. You are now subscribed and love what you do for all of us out here. Great instruction videos. I am looking forward to using all 17 stitches : )
Thank you for this! I bought one of these machines at a consignment store and it didn't come with a manual. I'm having a hard time finding the manual online. Does anyone here know how to find it?
Thank you for the video, very helpful. Do you know if my Ball Point needle from my Brother Project Runway will be compatible with my Brother LX3817A? I would love to see you sew a stretchy knit fabric....I'm wanting to make some Gator masks for my Grandchildren. Thank you so much.
I love your videos! I have not found any other person on TH-cam that explained all my questions I had in their videos. You are so in depth about trying to explain the skill set you have the best you can. Thank you so much! If it weren’t for you I would have never figured out my brother sewing machine!! ❤
I think it would be fine with thicker fabrics, just be sure to use a denim needle, which is just a stronger needle. I don't have a lot of luck with stretch material on any machine LOL. I just don't have the patience I guess.
Thank you ! I’ve had this sewing machine for a little over a year. I bought it to make wigs but I couldn’t get it going, this helped me so much! Lol I’ve watched a ton of other videos!!
perfect.. just what I needed to start back up sewing again.. it's been over 20 years since I picked up a machine and this helped with the basics of using one. Thanks!!
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed to help me get started with my machine. I found that the bobbin winder just didn't work well enough to keep my bottom thread from tangling, so I've ordered some prewound ones from Amazon to try. Your instructions were very straight forward with no fuss. I appreciate this video a lot!
If it's on the top, it's usually the bobbin that's the problem. If it's on the bottom, it's usually a problem with top threading. The first thing I always do is take all the thread out and rethread. Sometimes it doesn't get situated in the thread guides just right.
Thanks so much for this video. I just got this machine and carefully read the manual, but it's difficult for me to see pictures on a page and figure out how to do that in real life. With your video to help, though, I was easily able to thread this new machine. Great tutorial!
I got this machine Last year for my birthday and I haven’t used it yet, I used to sew with my mom on her old machine but I haven’t ever learned how to use a machine myself. Thanks for the video, I’m going to learn how to sew all kinds of magnificent things! 💜💜
Thank You For sharing this information here!! I am very much a beginner, and every time I need to reload my bobbin and re-thread, I watch this video, and sometimes even laugh at your jokes. Thank You so MUCH!!!
I honestly have no clue what I’m doing wrong, I followed all of the instructions, but whenever I try to sew, no stitches are left. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thank you so much for your video! I recently decided to get into sewing, and my mom got me this machine for Christmas...and I ended up feeling too intimidated to actually start learning for months😅. Your video was very clear and easy to follow, and I'm excited again to start sewing❤
Your information is good but the position of your hand blocks vision on things you're trying to show and your camera's not close enough. I really needed this kind of help but I really couldn't tell what you were doing when you put your hand in front of what you're actually talking. About thanks anyway
Thank you for your inspirational video. I've never used the song machine besides when I was a kid. And when I was a kid I did the very thing you said not to. I stuck my finger under where the bobbin is. And I accidentally hit the pedal. But yes you did answer a lot of questions that I didn't have about the machine and I just wanted to thank you.
This video was extremely informative and any time I forget something simple, I come back to this one. Aside from the visual, she explains well enough for me to understand and follow along! Props to her for this thorough, step by step video! I also have this exact sewing machine! I prefer hand stitching, but sometimes the machine helps the process run faster

Bought my girlfriend her first sowing machine (this exact one) and your video was perfect in demonstrating everything we needed to know for our first project/attempt! Thank you so much!
Awesome! I know she will enjoy her new machine!
I see that a lot of fellows have made "how to sew" videos, so you may find yourself sewing up something for your own use as well!
Just got my first machine for Christmas today & this video was so handy as a newbie!! Thank you so much & Merry Christmas :)
How wonderful! I'm sure you will have a lot of fun using your new machine! Be sure and check out this video about how to change the needles. I left that out of this video :( th-cam.com/video/JRXSBM97hS0/w-d-xo.html
I bought this sewing machine yesterday at Walmart . I was so surprised, It was the only one on the shelf! I had been wanting one for a while now. The last time I used one was in middle school.😊 I can’t wait to get started with mine! I would love to see how you sew face masks . Thank You for this video! 💕
Yay! I know you will enjoy this! I think I will do a video on masks!
Thank you so much, I had mines threaded wrong. You’re the only one I found so far who threads it this way, the correct way.
Awesome! I’m so glad the video was helpful!
I can't thank enough for the little tutorial instructional video!!! I just purchased the brother 3817 at Walmart. I have not sewn in years and this was such a great reminder video to get my sewing adventures started back up!! 🪡🧵📍👏👏👏
Thank you sooo much!!!! 🙏
This was the Best and easy to follow instruction. My first time ever working with a sweing machine and I did it all the way to a straight stich with you. THANK YOU! 🙏
Awesome! I’m so glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching😊
Absolutely BRILLIANT! Just bought this machine last week and have hemmed jeans and slacks. Learned from your vid, there is a DVD and a thread-cutter already on the machine, BRILLIANT! Thank you SOOOOOO much.
You are so welcome! I’m so glad it helped you out. Thank you for watching!
I had been out of sewing a while myself before I picked up this machine. It's a great little machine! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much this was so helpful my mom got one of these for Christmas & needed help getting started but with the help of this video she was sewing in no time!
Omg same! I'm using felt to start off
Yay! I bet she’s having fun!
Oh, yay! Felt is a good fabric to use!
You can also use paper to practice on!
You made this so easy i followed along and felt so comfortable i started calling you auntie by the end of the video. lol. 💓
Be Blessed Auntie you're a life saver🤗
Aww, I'm so glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
After you put the bobbin on and push to the right you have to turn it clockwise until it is in place. It will then wrap the thread evenly.
I’ll have to try that! Thanks!
ive watched this video about 2 or 3 times since i bought my machine two weeks ago, just started my first big project and came back to wind bobbin. love your style of speaking it makes me feel as if you’re teaching me personally, thank you!
Sad
Thank you for this video!! I've not used a sewing machine in years. Always had grandma or mom around to help remind me of the steps. Definitely started coming back to me as I went through the steps. Much appreciated!
That's a very detailed demo. Just bought this machine and hopefully I should be able to use it by following your demo.
I hope you enjoy your new machine!
@@momdoesstuff will use it tomorrow and update here 🙂
I’ve had this exact machine in my closet since November.
Congratulations! I haven't done any tutorials on those yet, but i think that's a great idea! Thank you and good luck!
I totally agree 👍 That is the only reason I bought my machine too.
Haven't used a sewing machine since idk when lol recently got a sewing machine and this video helped me out a lot!!! Thanks 😊 now I'm sewing away!!
Yay! I'm so glad it was helpful!
My daughter have been taking sewing lessons for the last 3 months from a friend of mine. She got really into it & I bought her this brand sewing machine for her b-day. She was really excited and can't wait to get started. Thank you for doing a great step by step instruction for this machine.
How exciting! I know she will enjoy it.
Thank you to my southern mommas teaching me the way
Lol, you are very welcome! Thanks for watching☺️
My mum just bought this sewing kit and we put on this video. It was very easy to follow along and thank you for making this video 💗
Thanks so much! I hope you and your mum are having fun!
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!! I was looking for some way to shift my needle since it was on the left! Thank you, thank you!!
You are so welcome! I’m glad it was helpful!
Going to my first sewing group this morning. I've only done one project on my brother machine. Thanks for the wonderful video, very informative. And your accent is just darling.
Awww, thanks! The sewing group sounds like fun! Thanks so much for watching 💕
Just bought one today! When she said below $80 , you see how inflation has hit and I bought it for $88😂
Yay! You'll enjoy it, even if was a little higher :)
Plus tax 😂
Thank you so much for this video. I bought the machine 4 months back and was struggling to use it. I stitched for the first time. Thanks again!
Awesome! Thank you for watching!
Yes this video was in depth and helpful and explain what that number dial was for.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video. My daughter received this machine as a gift last week and I haven't operated a sewing machine for many many years. I think your videos will be extremely helpful to both of us! ♡
Wonderful! I'm so glad it was helpful! I bet you and you daughter are going to make many memories together :)
Thanks for your video! The detailed view helped me to get my bobbin threaded--I've been trying for a bit!😊
You’re so welcome! I’m glad it was helpful!
My lord. You are wonderful. One of the best video teachers I've ever seen in my life. Change nothing about how you do things. I wish I could hug you.
Aww,, thank you so much!!!
Just bought this sewing machine am excited to get started thank you for the video
Thank for watching! I know you will have fun!
Hi I was thinking about buying this to keep me from boredom. Was it difficult learning on this machine, was it worth it? Any tips?
My family is growing and we really needed a machine. Day 1 today and this video helped me out. Thanks a ton!
oh this is the perfect video I was lookin for!!! thank you so much for your time and energy!!! you're a blessing!!!!!!!!
so nice to hear someone explain what I need in a way I can understand ♡
My daughter is trying to learn how to use this sewing machine and your videos is helping her really out she's only just 10 and I'm think she's getting better at it now thank you very much thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you
Oh, this is so sweet! Tell her to just keep working at it and soon she'll be sewing anything she wants to! Thank you so much for sharing this with me!
Thank you for teaching me what my mom couldn’t please adopt me
Awww, you’re so sweet! I’m glad the video helped you 😘
Thank you! My husband brought this machine for me 6 months ago. I am finally getting some motivation. Bless day!
Brother has great customer service. Just call or email and they will send you the missing accessories. Hope you are enjoying your machine!
There's a TH-cam video on operating a brother machine.
You helped me so much. It was like my own mom teaching me. I'm a southern girl myself so you having that accent also made me feel at home lol Thanks so much for this video! Can't wait to start making things!
Awww, how sweet! I'm glad the video was helpful!
This is really useful video
Thank you
My question is I have same machine but my stitches are not coming properly it’s stitches for little bit again it’s not
And my niddle is not picking up bobbing thread
Can you please help
I’m so sorry you are having trouble! Might be a bent needle. Try a fresh needle and see if that helps
@@momdoesstuff
Thank you for your reply
I checked and my needle position was wrong I changed it and now it’s working fine .
Thanks again
I just want to thank you so much!! I bought my sewing machine nearly 4 years ago. I tried to sew on it and never could fully figure it out. Watching your video has helped me out so much! I am no longer discouraged by sewing! Thank you!
You are so welcome! I'm glad it got you started!
Excellent point. Thanks!
This may solve my problem! Thank you for the video & comment
Thank you so much for this!! It helped me more than the directions did!
Saaaaaaame.
Why is my bottom thread cutting as well? I have to re do it Everytime.
Wow! That's an awesome collection! I'm so glad the video was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this! I bought one of these machines at a consignment store and it didn't come with a manual. I'm having a hard time finding the manual online. Does anyone here know how to find it?
support.brother.com/g/b/manualtop.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hf_lx3817eus Hope that helps!
This video was so helpful! Just bought this machine as my first one and it worked on the first try - followed all the steps. Thank you!
You are so welcome! I’m glad it helped you out 🤗
I thought you did a great job.. it really helped me with mine to get started.
Thank you so much. My aunt passed away and left me her sewing machines and I had no idea how to use them until now!! 💖💖
I'm so glad they were helpful!
Should work just fine :)
I love your videos! I have not found any other person on TH-cam that explained all my questions I had in their videos. You are so in depth about trying to explain the skill set you have the best you can. Thank you so much! If it weren’t for you I would have never figured out my brother sewing machine!! ❤
Awesome! I’m so glad they were helpful!
Would you say this is decent for denim or curtain material? Also is this good for stretch fabric? Definitely interested in getting this one.
Yay! I'm so glad it helped get you going!
You're instructions were so clear, very helpful!
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed them!
Very detailed and clear. Thank you!
perfect.. just what I needed to start back up sewing again.. it's been over 20 years since I picked up a machine and this helped with the basics of using one. Thanks!!
You’re so welcome! Have fun😊
Thank you so much i was so confused about my new machine
I'm so glad you found it helpful!
Yay! I'm so glad it helped you!
Hello! So mine looks good from the front but when I went to turn it around (when it was done) the back and REALLY messy and bad looking :/
And it’s the stitching, forgot to say
If it's on the top, it's usually the bobbin that's the problem. If it's on the bottom, it's usually a problem with top threading. The first thing I always do is take all the thread out and rethread. Sometimes it doesn't get situated in the thread guides just right.
Thanks so much for this video. I just got this machine and carefully read the manual, but it's difficult for me to see pictures on a page and figure out how to do that in real life. With your video to help, though, I was easily able to thread this new machine. Great tutorial!
Awesome! I’m so glad it was helpful!
thank you for such a detailed explanation!
You are so welcome! I’m glad it was helpful!
I got this machine Last year for my birthday and I haven’t used it yet, I used to sew with my mom on her old machine but I haven’t ever learned how to use a machine myself. Thanks for the video, I’m going to learn how to sew all kinds of magnificent things! 💜💜
Yes! I know you will enjoy it!
I love your instruction. Omg you saved me now I am ready to try and sew.
I'm so glad you liked it! I just put up a project video if you want to try a Raggy Edged quilt :) th-cam.com/video/5NnouujpNlM/w-d-xo.html
Thank You For sharing this information here!! I am very much a beginner, and every time I need to reload my bobbin and re-thread, I watch this video, and sometimes even laugh at your jokes. Thank You so MUCH!!!
You are so welcome!!! I’m so glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much. You made it so easy to understand.
You’re very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Very helpful, got me up and running after something like 15 years of not using a sewing machine!
Lol, you never really forget ☺️
I honestly have no clue what I’m doing wrong, I followed all of the instructions, but whenever I try to sew, no stitches are left. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Oh no!🙁is the bobbin threaded through the tension slot correctly? I would try changing needles sometimes they’re just duds
Try this one th-cam.com/video/0GZ9KDDkB-I/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for your inspirational video. I've never used the song machine besides when I was a kid. And when I was a kid I did the very thing you said not to. I stuck my finger under where the bobbin is. And I accidentally hit the pedal. But yes you did answer a lot of questions that I didn't have about the machine and I just wanted to thank you.
You are so very welcome! I'm so glad you found the video helpful :) Happy sewing!
THIS IS THE EXACT ONE I HAVE
This video was extremely informative and any time I forget something simple, I come back to this one. Aside from the visual, she explains well enough for me to understand and follow along! Props to her for this thorough, step by step video! I also have this exact sewing machine! I prefer hand stitching, but sometimes the machine helps the process run faster
@@draacu Thank you! I'm so glad it was helpful!
