    Abstract:
    At DEKA Research and Development, we are dedicated to improving lives through development of state-of-the-art technology. We are well known for innovations in robotics (the LUKE prosthetic arm), mobility (e.g., the Segway Human Transporter and the iBOT personal mobility device), water purification, dialysis, and more. In this talk I will discuss some of our current projects and our approach to innovation.
    Bio:
    At the age of 30, Dean Kamen sold his first company, AutoSyringe, and in 1982 he founded DEKA to focus on medical innovations aimed to improve lives around the world. Dean continues to push DEKA to be a place where no idea seems too big and where creativity and crazy cool gizmos reign supreme.
    In 1989 he founded FIRST® Robotics to build the next generation’s workforce. FIRST currently serves more than one million young people, ages 6-18, in more than 113 countries around the world.
    Dean holds more than 1000 patents; he is a member of the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the National Academy of Engineering; and he received the Lemelson-MIT Prize in 2002 and the National Medal of Technology in 2000.
