Thank you sir. It's a blessing to be sitting in San Francisco and enjoying a slice of NOLA.

Many thanks, James. 'Kiss Me Sweet' was composed by Steve J. Lewis and Armand J. Piron in 1923. For those interested in the ichnography, here goes. Like Piron, Tuba Skinny play it in the key of C; and they play the 16-bar Verse only once (00:32 - 01:02). Also like Piron they take Bars 7 and 8 of the 20-bar Chorus as a 'break'. You can hear Barnabus play it at 01:14 and 02:32, Craig at 01:54, Max at 03:12 and Robin at 04:28. There is an amusing Coda in the Piron recording which - surprisingly - Tuba Skinny omit, though they have a lovely rallentando ending. The interesting backing to Craig's solo by Shaye and Barnabus is the kind of thing Tuba Skinny devise and execute so well, as is the way Craig and Shaye play harmonies behind the final bars of Barnabus's solo chorus. Though Tuba Skinny choose not to have a vocal, there are words to this tune. For the words of the Chorus, go to Piron's original recording: th-cam.com/video/K7HuZNF77IQ/w-d-xo.html - or if you would like to hear the words of the Verse as well as the Chorus, go to the King Oliver recording (he plays it in the key of G): th-cam.com/video/PJTecT7DHOQ/w-d-xo.html . 20-bar Choruses are unusual, though there was a fashion for them at the time. Think of 'After You've Gone', 'What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes At Me For?', 'Oh You Beautiful Doll', 'The Darktown Strutters Ball', 'Drop That Sack', 'Hard-Hearted Hannah', 'You've Got the Right Key but the Wrong Keyhole' and 'Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries', for example. One final bit of tedious analysis: when it's Shaye's turn to play the 20-bar Chorus as a solo (02:58), she plays the first six bars and then gives the next two (the break) to Max; she then plays Bars 9 to 12 and leaves the remaining eight to Max. This is a typical Tuba Skinny stratagem - and a lesson to us all in how to make the music interesting. Almost all Tuba Skinny performances are masterclasses for the rest of the world's traditional jazz bands. There. You will be relieved to hear I've finished. I will go away and have a cup of coffee.

Many decades ago, during a midlife crisis I took music theory. So your comments have always interested me, though a musician I'm not. (I'm a retired aerospace engineer.) Thanks for your analysis, especially your comments on the TS orchestration and their use of syncopation.

@@leochen887 Thanks for the kind words, Leo. I wish I had taken music theory. I don't understand anywhere near as much as I would like. I have taught myself, with the help of books, TH-cam videos and occasionally insights from experienced musicians, when I have ventured to ask them questions.

@@JamesSterling I'm already on my fifth coffee of the day, James. But I think I shall have to switch to a chilled beer for my next drink: it's so hot here again in the English Midlands and there's no prospect of much-needed rain for quite a few days. I've been working in the garden but couldn't endure the heat for long.

Max on string bass---cool! That's a good variation for Sam Morgan covers...gotta hear that buoyant walking bass! Twerk Thompson would be another good choice for a sub...he has that feel down. Check out his playing and singing on Shotgun Jazz Band's YT of "Old Kentucky Home," with Craig's fine alto. Was Todd taking a night off or on vacation when the vid here was shot?

They are all excellent musicians; but, then Shaye plays a chorus and shows just how superior she is. The double bass instead of a tuba or Sousaphone is a good choice for this song.

I wonder if Shaye plays actual trumpet, or just cornet.

Shay is classically trained on the piano. She started busting when she came to NOLA. She has played a honky tonk piano, ragtime piano, violin, accordion, trumpet, trombone, and other instruments. What she plays depends on what band she's playing with on any given night. But with two but skinny it's been their cornet and alone in the last 8 or 9 years.
Every member of the band is an extraordinary musician who plays multiple instruments exceedingly well. I find it amazing. And almost all members have written compositions for the band.
But Shay is extra special. She is unique and irreplaceable.
