It's Oktoberfest season! Today would have been the first day of Oktoberfest 2021, but - just like last year - this year's "Wiesn" as we call it in Munich was canceled. Since there are plenty of Oktoberfest celebrations in the US and all over the world though, this is the perfect time to talk about some COMMON MYTHS and MISCONCEPTIONS regarding the biggest beer fest in the world. I made a list with 10 common Oktoberfest myths and will let you know which ones are TRUE and which ones are complete BULLSHIT! :)

Thank you for setting the record straight. I'm from Cincinnati and lived in Munich in my late 20s. I've attended Oktoberfest many times, trying desperately not to look like a tourist and only during my last visit to the Wiesn did I feel somewhat like a Münchener. Zinzinnati's festival is something of a joke. I mean, Sam Adams is the sponsor? Mentioning the food here would only be insulting. If you approach it as an excuse to people watch, then you can have a good time with it but it has little to nothing to do with Oktoberfest. **This Cincinnatian not only knows Robbie Williams "Angels", but also plays/sings on acoustic guitar.

      Myth:
Chief Inspector Clouseau does not show up at Wiesn just to be unsuccessfully hunted down by henchmen while people are in the background singing
      "Boobie, boobie...
      Boobie, boobie...
      Boobie, boobie...

My mother was German, she grew up in Bavaria. I did spend some of my childhood in Germany and have such happy memories. My mom recently passed and I'm heartbroken. Watching these videos actually is part of my healing, it helps me to indulge in my memories of my mom and my love of Germany. The mention of King Ludwig made me recall our visit to one of his castles and I was a small child and asked where his potty was. Thank you for bringing smiles and the beauty of Germany to me in a time when I really need it.

It is great that you still love Germany after being gone for so long. But the Ludwig she is talking about is Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I). The castles you mean are surely built by Ludwig II, the grandson of Ludwig I.

Hi Feli - Greeting from Munich 🥨🍻. Love your style. I'm quite sure, going to some Octoberfest in Cincinatty in your Dirndl definately drawing some attention towards you! Still remember visiting myself a "little Octoberfest" in Levenworth, WA in August 1995. It's an Alps themed town with a German community and I loved it. There a professional dance group from Seattle performed the Holzhacker as well as some Schuhplattler dances amongst their own Linedances while wearing Dirndl and Lederhosen. They were performing really good so I congratulated them for their performance. When they noticed that I'm from Munich due to my accent they even invited me to join their after party. That was a hell of a lot of fun.

I watch all of your videos. They fondly remind me of the 3 years that I was stationed in nearby Augsburg. I went to Oktoberfest in 1978 and 1979. The military unit that I was a part of had a Lowenbrau vending machine in the lounge and we were the biggest consumer of Lowenbrau beer in Augsburg for that distributor. Bigger than any restaurant or pub. That status guaranteed us a reserved table in the Lowenbrau tent every year with a first free beer and a chicken to start us off. It was wonderful being able to walk around the area and have a place to come back to. What I also remember is that the price of beer at Oktoberfest was the the prevailing price of a beer at every other fest that followed until the next year's Oktoberfest.

Yepp, same here when I studied in Stuttgart. Oooh boy, that were some wild times.
It was often called "Wasn" instead of "Wiesn" to differentiate it from the Oktoberfest Wiesn.
But obviously, all the people who were non-native German speakers had massive problems distinguishing the two different sounds.
So much so, that I had one group of people almost go to Munich instead, when I told them to come to the Wasn. Luckily I had my doubts when they asked me how much time they needed to get there so I could clarify that misunderstanding.

    • @T0MT0Mmmmy
      @T0MT0Mmmmy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@RustyDust101 it is not called "Wasn" to differentiate it from "Wiesn". It is called "Wasen" because in the local dialect of Stuttgart a lawn is called "Wasen" and the fairground/lawn it takes place is named "Cannstatter Wasen" (lawn of Cannstatt, Cannstatt is the city quarter) .

Also spent 1 day in Munich visiting the BMW Classic & BMW museum. I was sad to hear Oktoberfest was cancelled perhaps I will go sometime. I can say the food in bavaria is sooo good! proper wurst salat, kartoffel salat, schnitzel, etc.. and the Heffe/Marzen/local bier is also delicious! Prost!

I have been to Oktoberfest in Munich a few times, nothing around the world compares to it. I was really surprised to see carnival type rides at Wiesn. I cant wait to go back when my son turns 16,.
Both time I went it was during the weekend where the Italians come to Munich for Oktoberfest, dont know if it has a name for it, but they would get on the tables and chug beer while singing in Italian. That was an awesome time.
Both times I went to Oktoberfest, the band in the Löwenbräu and the Paulaner tent played the chicken dance and people got on the tables dancing to it. I went in 2007 and again in 2012. Maybe I just got lucky on those 2 years in 2 different tents.
It was great hearing Country Roads and Sweet Caroline at the festival.

In North Dakota we don't really associate the chicken dance with Oktoberfest it's more of a reception wedding dance for the younger children to join the adults in the festivities. Also popular is the Hokey Pokey and the Butterfly and usually when the half shots of red-eye are going around with a beer Chaser the band or DJ is playing the little brown jug. It's a bit of the intermingling of the ethnic groups that settled North Dakota Wyoming Minnesota and South Dakota. Which are French, Scandinavian, German , polish, Ukrainian, the Baltic states where a lot of Germans from Russia emigrated to this area from. Also the Danes, Dutch , belgians , & British Isles. But the first settlers here are the Native Americans!! During World Youth Day in Denver Colorado a lot of Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries were interested in the words and choreography of these three main dances which they had our groups from Minot , Bismarck, and Dickinson perform for them, while they played the music and then they share their ethnic wedding Festival music with us.

When I was stationed in Germany in the early 90's my friend and I went one time to check it out. We had a lot of fun, but to be honest, there were just too many people. I understood that there was probably going to be a lot of people because it's a very popular festival, but man, I wasn't expecting that many. We had to squeeze by in between groups just standing around drinking and talking and good luck trying to find a seat in the tents. I loved and miss all the other festivals/beer in Bavaria though. I had some of the best times of my life over there. "Ein Prosit, Ein Prosit "

As for dancing (14:55) there isn't traditional dancing in the main tents, but there is traditional music and dancing at the *Odie Wiesn* within the Oktoberfest grounds. I know you know that - it was supposed to be a "one off" thing in 2010, but has continued - but I just wanted to mention it. Maybe you could do a video sometime on the Odie Wiesn?

I grew up in Western Oregon, and in a little town called Mount Angel, they have held their own "Mount Angel Oktoberfest" for over 50 years. We lived about 20 miles from it, and there were several kids I knew whose families would go every year. One kid I knew was very excited one year, because his family was planning to travel to Munich to see the real thing. I believe that this was in 1972, right after the Munich Olympics. He had been to the Oktoberfest at Mount Angel many times since he was a little kid. When he came back from Germany, he was disappointed, because it wasn't like the "real Oktoberfest" in Mount Angel. I asked him if he understood that the "real" Oktoberfest was the one he went to in Germany, but he didn't want to talk about it any more.

Hi Felicia. Love your videos. I went to Oktoberfest in 1982 and again in 2016. It was almost like a flashback as pretty much nothing changed between the visits. Both times the „Ententanz“ had a prominent role.So I would contradict your myth on that on. In 2016 there was almost a „Trachtenpflicht“ in comparison to 1982. Die Welt ist übrigens klein. Neulich habe ich eine Freundin von dir aus München kennengelernt.

Every time I hear the chicken dance, I tell the German wife "hey, it's the national song of Germany!"...she doesn't think I'm funny...
Plus, she's so northern German she's practically Danish.
But the way you describe Oktoberfest is like the Texas State Fair here. I mean, it's a big thing, especially around Dallas (where the Texas State Fair grounds are...it's an actual name of that part of the city, Fair Park), and when I was in school we had a day off that was called "Fair Day" (I think they still get it off, but it's just considered a regular teacher in-service day). But it's not a religious holiday that we go around wishing each other "Happy Texas State Fair!" Though there is a lot of similar drinking and fried food...

I did think Oktoberfest was a harvest festival of some kind. And the different breweries sponsoring the tents I learned from a previous video. Germany and most of Europe have a much better attitude to alcohol than America.
So have you ever done a video about German foods. And if not, That might make an interesting video. I’m suddenly very hungry.

    Again a great video. 👍
Some details on some this years Oktoberfest.
The Wiesn is this year sadly again cancelled as you said, but there is some action still going on. Munich breweries presented special Oktoberfest beer editions, harnessed horse pull the brewery waggons (Brauereigespanne) through town and breweries and restaurants have some small events. For sure you cannot compare it to the normal Wiesn, but people make the best out of the current situation and cheer for next week return of the real event. 🙂

we go every year to the oktoberfest from switzerland. often we have a reservation in the "Weinzelt", you can't order Helles there but they have "Weizenbier". And yes its true, if you want be respected you should were no fake dresses. With this you probably will have problems to come into a tent without reservation, specially at weekends when its full of people. I can recommend the "oide wiesn" which is a small wiesn inside the wiesn in a old traditionall style of the wiesn like 50-100years ago. And visit the "Teufelsrad" its much fun to watch or participate and the speaker is an icon.

So about the chicken dance, is it possible times have changed? In 1984 at the age of 18, I was traveling through Europe with my best friend via Eurail. I’m born Swiss but raised in the US. We went to Munich, which is one of my top 5 favorite cities in the world so I always stop by when I’m in Europe. One evening we landed at the Hofbrauhaus. While it wasn’t Oktoberfest, but rather the month of April, we did end up dancing to the polka band playing. In fact I was asked by a rather older lady, definitely someone’s grandmother to dance. And the song that started playing was in fact the chicken dance. So, Munich, famous beer hall, lots of beer, and the chicken dance. Either way it is one of my fondest memories. Getting back to my youth hostel that night, however, is a memory I do not have.

That hilarious about Robbie Williams. I used to listen to The Ego Has Landed on a loop back in like 99. I still randomly sing Jesus in a Camper Van and get the weirdest looks from people. I don't think anyone I know barely has a clue who Robbie Williams is. I'm in Portland, Oregon and I have no clue how I even learned about him? Maybe I heard Let me entertain you on MTV or something??
