This is one my favorite games of all time. Nothing else ever really like it. The amount of depth and units was just pretty amazing and its such a unique game building and recruiting units
There was a sequel on the N64 called "Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber" which has the same gameplay style, but with some changes such as more job classes, a few combination attacks between certain types of units, and removal of the tarot cards. If you love the original, it might be worth checking out if you've never had the chance. An original cartridge can be kind of expensive, but I believe it's available on the Wii U's Virtual Console. Other than that, the closest I've ever played was "Soul Nomad and the World Eaters" for the PS2. That game had the same mechanic of each unit in your party being a squad that's combat actions are automated based on their formation, but the tactical aspect was more of a traditional turn-based strategy-RPG system instead of the real-time system used in Ogre Battle. It also had some other interesting mechanics such as passive bonuses based on which "room" a unit is assigned to, overworld spells and abilities based on a unit's leader, and group bonuses that could make some characters more powerful if paired with several of their own job/monster class.

LOVED this game back in the day. Listening to it again, I'm getting big time Valkyria Chronicles vibes and after doing some research, sure enough it's the same guy - Hitoshi Sakimoto. That's why it sounds so full and rich :)
@@omensoffate So the concept of making your Lord/Lady stay in 1 location and not move, and fighting with other units is an easy one for a kid who rented the game from the video store pre internet?
The feeling you get after pacifying a map then sending three of your best units (or ones that have history with the boss for recruitment after you win) to surround the enemy base and hearing “fight it out.”
It's amazing the kind of variety of sound the SNES could provide.... and people still cling to that cope that the Genesis was somehow better in the sound department. I've never heard anything from the Genesis that ever came close to any good SNES game with a great soundtrack.

Unicorn Overlord got me coming back here.

First time I played this I couldn't find Lans town at the top right of the map and gave up 😂

Sadly they never use any of the Ogre battle music in Unicorn Overlord. This music is suitable to be included actually.
