It's unusual because most people with that skin tone live in the Congo or other places that are extremely close to the equator. Australia is more near the bottom of the planet, so her skin being that dark is rare in that area.

And don't forget that the Eskimos and many North American indigenous people are dark brown, thought the y live in colder climates. From what I've read, if the body gets vitamin D from food sources, then the skin doesn't need to lighten to get it from the sun. Dark skin is amazing, the color of the gods.
