Lucky you! I heard him only once in StPetersburg RU and only by sheer luck! It was almost impossible to get tickets to his or Gilels concerts, unless you knew “somebody”, or willing to pay black market prices for tickets. They were “high commodity”, and Oustrakh, as well.

Richter very much owned the lesser known Schubert sonata in B major. I also like Wilhelm Kempffs somewhat lighter recorded account of the same work.
How well he characterises the dark austere drama in the first mvt of the A minor D 784, the slow mvt becomes a lyrical oasis amid the tension of the outer movements.

30:52 - As you may notice, this is the point where the 1st movement of the D.625 sonata suddenly cuts off, as it was left unfinished by Schubert if I remember correctly.
I remember listening to Paul Badura-Skoda who had tried to complete the movement, which sounded rather weird, since he just repeated the first part of the movement in the same key the movement cuts off. It didn't really sound like Schubert. I wonder what other attempts have been made to complete the movement.
    Anyone?

@@j.vonhogen9650 yes - thanks for your comment! I am talking about how the theme at 1:22-1:26 of this Schubert piece is shamelessly plaguerized by Tchaikovsky in his 1st piano concerto 3rd movement (near a cadenza, if my memory serves me correctly).

    • @j.vonhogen9650

@@militaryandemergencyservic3286 - Thanks for your explanation. I couldn't find the specific moment you were refering to in your comment, but I'll try again with the score when I have more time.
I think it's worth mentioning that Tchaikovsky's 1st piano concerto is stuffed with various Russian and Ukrainian folksong themes, and that there is even a French chansonette in it somewhere.
Schubert and Tchaikovsky may have simply used/quoted the same folkloristic musical material independent of each other. Therefore, I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that this is a clear case of plagiarism. Tchaikovsky's musical friends, Rubinstein and Huber, accused him of stealing melodies from other composers when he played his concerto for them on the piano to get their feedback. Tchaikovsky was shocked by their negative feedback and insinuations, and felt insulted and falsely accused, which is said to have lead to Tchaikovsky's decision not to dedicate the concerto to Nicolai Rubinstein.
Maybe you would like to dig up some more info on this, since I'm not sure if I remember everything correctly.
Good luck researching this, and please let me know in this thread when you have figured it all out!
