  • In this tutorial I introduce my method for painting Comic Style/Cel Shaded miniatures. For me, this style was heavily inspired by the Borderlands series and Sean Sutter's artwork for Relic Blade.

    As an ink artist this look appeals to me a lot. My hands just aren't steady enough anymore to build up looks with traditional painting styles on models, and I feel like this would give me the freedom to still achieve a bold and effective look without having to stress over technique a lot.

    -Mechs vs Minions (100 minions, 4 sets of 25 poses. All done in a cartoony style from League of Legends).
    -Darkest Dungeon (300 ish minis, in sets of 4 or less. More variety, and darker asthetic. May wash it at the end to bring it down, but I'm hesitant).

    I just started watching your videos and found this one quite interesting, but the most interesting thing was the sponge you were using to put your paints on. I'm just starting out and I think this is too advanced for me, but was wondering what the sponge was (I am assuming a wet palette). I've seen others with paper towels and parchment paper but was wondering what advantages you get from painting that way. Of course, subbed! Thanks for your time.

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a sheet of felt, with baking parchment on top. Mostly I just it instead of paper towel so it's not a bright white spot on the camera, but it's also more durable and washable.

  • @EnigmaofGR
    @EnigmaofGR 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Mike, I saw Drowned Earth over on Ash’s channel today, and wanted to ask how well you think this style would translate to the minis from that game? It looks and feels like a comic book to me, or an action movie shot in rotoscope circa A Scanner Darkley, and was contemplating picking it up and giving this style a try; other wise I still think I may get the game, but I may need to change up my art plans.

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it'd work incredibly well on the dinosaurs and the larger pieces like Sage. Some of the human models are really detail-saturated and I feel this style works best when models have simpler details. Nix is pretty comparable to the Geomancer and might work out fine, but many others are busier. That said, the Gnome Alchemist is pretty loaded with small detail and he came out well enough :)

  • @uglyduckling81
    @uglyduckling81 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm wondering if you could lock in the highlights with gloss varnish then use oil based wash for black lining.
    Gives you days to fix any mistakes.
    Also possibly a zenithal undercoat for natural shading from the get go

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A wash won't really give you the effect of tight controlled lines. It's probably save time, but you'd get a totally different look from it.

    • @uglyduckling81
      @uglyduckling81 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Epic Duck Studios I guess wash was the wrong term. I add odourless solvent to oil paint to create a wash consistency. I could just as easily add less for a thicker, more controllable result. The benefit being that it won't fully dry for a couple of days and can be reactivated during that time with a little more thinners.
      But aside from that you probably have upto an hours work time with an oil based paint to fix or remove paint after it's been applied by just using a clean brush.
      After an hour it starts getting touch dry and need to be reactivated as I mentioned.
      Might be a bit less with a less runny consistency.
      Also it doesn't dry on your brush giving you endless work time until you actually run out of paint on the brush.

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're describing an Oil Wash as I use and understand them. Still don't really get the feel of individual black lines from them though, unless you're spending a lot of time with a brush and some solvent very tightly controlling what you remove ... And then I think you're losing the time benefit you're after ;)

    • @uglyduckling81
      @uglyduckling81 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Epic Duck Studios I've ordered some acrylic Inc that your using to try my hand at this technique. I've got a fuedal guard army that I'm 3D printing that I think this would look good on.
      Hopefully it's not too hard to achieve a decent result. It looks like it relies a lot on placement of the lines which might be an experience thing. Have you done this a lot to get the results your showing in your comic style tutorials?

  • @jnrmack

  • @Zejety

    Putting on the black lines looks like the toughest part here. The thought of doing hatch shading with a brush honestly scares me. Has anyone tried using a sharpie for the black parts?

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I tried it with an archival ink pen (basically an extra precise Sharpie that won't fade) and I didn't like the result as much, the lines were all the exact same width and it kind of felt like it lacked character, if that makes sense? Also the tip of the archival ink pen is pretty stiff and took a bit of a beating from even a quick test, not sure the pen would have survived a whole model.

  • @36samson
    @36samson ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you experimented with Gundam pens? Clearly it would be difficult to reach certain areas, but I wonder if it would make cross hatching the large areas easier.

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've used them a little, but as you've noted they're difficult to get into a lot of areas. Ultimately I found I was using pens for maybe 20% of the linework and then switching back to a brush anyway.

    Would seraphon from aos work well or would the scales mess with the black

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably wouldn't want to outline every scale, I'd probably just underline them, and maybe just every other one or so... enough to imply that the rest exist

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The same goes for other heavily textured miniatures - like the hexagon cloth common on Infinity minis, etc.Inking all of the detail would end up being too much, but doing a little bit of it to help imply to rest of the texture could work
