Hi Howard, thank you very much for your kind message. I really appreciate it. Yes, I was very sad to hear that he had passed. I watched all of his videos many times and really enjoyed his passion and enthusiasm for the old bikes. Would love to have met him. Best wishes, Mike.

It's been nice watching you carefully put this back to original condition. Great to see for someone who saw these roll out new, off the showrooms, back in our youth. You do very fine work, Mike!

Good stuff, mate. Watching and listening to you work on the bike is like having a session with a therapist!!! Very relaxing. Cheers.

License plate screws HAVE to be lined up and symmetrical. OCD helps to keep our bikes looking good, clean, well maintained, and happy. Cheers, Mike!

We old mountain bikers always used hairspray for our grips. Went on slick, then dried solid. To replace, a skinny flat screwdriver and a few sprays or a hairdryer. Never an issue.

Haha! I love that you had to get the screw slots in the number plate fixings all pointing the same way… I’d have to do the same thing too! Cheers Mike.

When you look at the Big 3 ‘Norton BSA and Triumph’ each manufacturer had some great designs and innovations, but OMG they also had some real finicky and dodgy designs and the way things bolted together, no wonder the Japanese manufacturer’s took over the motorcycle industry, but we still love our Brit Bikes

Watching the fitment of the airbox/side panel makes me realise what a great step forward the use of plastic was in motorcycle design.

The inner and outer airboxes are metal. And the way I discovered to make the filters attach firmly to the inner part of the airbox, is to pull the wire mesh back into original shape. That is, take the form that it took from being compressed, back into original shape. This reduces the parameter enough to make it grasp the cast lip in the inner airbox firmly enough to remain in position while you place the outer.

Brilliant place to drawn the heat of the Zener and keep it out of ham's way. Same as on my '76 T140V.

    Nice video Mike!
I understand the license plate holder:. I found a very nice original 71 plate for my Commando and had that registered to the bike (one time registration as long as I own the bike), but didn't have the heart to drill additional holes in the plate to "match up" with what was in the Norton mount. I modeled up an adapter in cad and 3D printed one.

Hey, Mike, nice video again… Having all the slots at the license-plate the same is what I liked the most! Greetings from northern Germany Manfred

Great job Mike, tho nothing beats the simplicity of the earlier concentric filters, simple, easily fitted and look great.

"I were right about that saddle though". Maybe so but it looks way more comfortable than the one referred to in the Yellow Pages bike advert.

The airbox, a design classic by Slumberglade.

    Interested in the rego.
Do you not have “classic bike” rego in USA?

I always use center stand rubber on the shifter. The 'correct' rubbers don't last long. I also use Honda rubber on the kick start, they last forever.

Thanks for sharing Mike, things certainly got more 'complicated' as the design was updated in regards to a 'side of road fix' ... 😅 .. 😉 .. 😂

I used to fit the rubbers with petrol, they slide on then the petrol evaporates.

I love your videos ! My first big bike was a 1967 Triumph Daytona 500. It was a big jump from my Honda 90 . I really wish I had it now. I enjoy watching you do the detail work on these old bikes. Being a detail person myself, your attention is appreciated. I would like to ride again but at 70 the wife is concerned. By the way I love your theme music on the video. What band is that ?

Here I was thinking the Ham Can type air filter box on the Commando was a horrid design....the Bonne's giving it a run for its money! Wonder why they thought it necessary to put so much engineering/material weight/tooling costs in to that setup?

  • @bazxl57

Probably nothing wrong with your airbox rubbers, but it looks like the collars that screw onto the rear inlets on the Amal carbs are missing you may also need larger clips as well i did )

Shame about the Emgo air filter not fitting first time correctly. I’ve just fitted one to a T160, also Emgo, and that needed to be trimmed to suit. You’d think after all these years the correct size would be made. Fortunately we were born in an age when fettling to make things work was a matter of course to us.

The OIF airbox is probably the biggest hack on the bike. Oh wait, the rear master cylinder…

To be fair, these are T140 issues, the earlier bikes were a bit better. The E model has cost me the most profanity, love to ride it though.

Umberslade Hall !!!!! Clearly evident the disastrous consequences of another monumental BSA group board decision.. employing Aerospace engineers to design motorcycles !!!
Any fool with half a brain could see the seat/frame geometry was too high.. a side profile in the previous video highlights this all too obviously.. and as for thin tinplate rear light units and bent bits of wire for headlight brackets, don't even mention the seat retaining clip 😂😂😂😂
Oddly enough and all that having been said I still have an odd affection for these much maligned and criticised OIF 650s same goes for its equally unloved stable mate the A65.. and yes I've owned both .
