- I picked up a DCC decoder from Soundtraxx at the Rocky Mountain Train Show and now I'm getting it installed in my Bachmann 2-8-0 locomotive. It is the first step in my journey to converting my layout to DCC.

Thanks, Jason. Yeah, just putting the loco down on the tracks without being able to run it felt a little anticlimactic. Hopefully I can get it fully running in the next few weeks.

Another fantastic video. I’m jealous that your install was like that. I have a 2-8-0 bowser kit I’m in the process of building and then adding dcc to. Same decoder. Just more wiring and adding pickups and head and rear lights.
I was trying to keep it simple for my first install. I will probably add a headlight at some point.

Hi Drew, you got me there ! I watched the video from beginning thru the end and thought that I would see that steam engine running and making "noise" as it's suppose too. In fact, I was thinking of you test running it on a small piece of flextracks all wired up and ready for DCC. Decoders are sometimes tricky to install. Especially in tight space engines like diesel. I tried to avoid this job for a long time. Not anymore. I'm now putting "Keep Alive" in all the engines I got or new ones. No more stalling and a lot more fun to run them. Take care.
Stay tuned. I'm working on building a DCC-EX command station right now and should be able to get something running in the next couple of weeks. I think I might have some space for a keep alive and may install one at some point in the future.
@@WhiteRiverLine Thanks for answering Drew. I bought a decoder for an Atlas MP15dc from Tony's trains exchange. It's a TCS Wow sound unit. Not only does it makes a great sound and very realistic, it's also Keep Alive equiped. You have no idea how much I like the performance of the engine. And on top of that, it never stops or loose power anywhere on tracks. It helps a lot when you got no time to clean the whole trackage before running trains. Keep on your good work.
Belt sanders are really persuasive during arguments.
Even more so when they've got 30 grit on them.
was there no space for a keep-alive pack? Those things are amazing.
I could probably fit one in later if I wanted.
Not bad at all for a first time installation. I think you probably could have gotten a cube speaker in there with the factory board while using an 8 pin plug. It's ok that you did your own thing and hard wired it. Only thing i would have done differently was to reverse one of the speakers so the magnetic field would not push against the other. Other than that....nice job/congrats on the first installation. It only gets easier from here. :)
Thanks, Bill. I tried reversing one of the speakers, but it still the fields pushing them apart. In the end I decided it was easier to run the wiring this way. It's always interesting to hear what choices others would make. Gives me ideas for next time.
Great video...i am about to install a SoundTraxx decoder into a Bachmann 2-8-0, although it will probably be a TSU-1100 (I have 3 other steam locos with the 1100). The hardwiring might take a bit more work, but seems "cleaner" in the end. Also plan to upgrade the headlight to LED with a 1k ohm resistor. Any insight into getting access to the headlight?

Looking forward to your DCC system, you mentioned DCC++ Have you thought about DCC-EX? Principally the same but potentially added feature and expandability.

nicely done. what are the two tapes that you were using for the installation? The double sided and the one holding the decoder and wires in place?
The double sided tape is just double sided scotch tape. I'm not really sure of the official name for the other tape, but it's used for electronics and computer repair. amzn.to/3EvtOOU
